Chapter 16: chapter 16
In the middle of the dungeon, there was currently a black hemispherical object opening. The object was so dark that it seemed as if it was swallowing all light.
It was a [Gate].
The gate opened, and what came forth was―
The world went silent.
A strange absence of sound filled the surroundings. The proverbial sound of silence rang forth.
The thousands of troops revealed their forms.
THEY WERE DANGEROUS. HIGHLY DANGEROUS. SOMETHING NEVER SEEN BEFORE.
The bizarre forces before the dungeon made that abundantly clear.
After that period of silence-
Hell broke loose. The dungeon felt extremely threatened, so threatened that it forgot everything and it began spawning monsters at an unimaginable rate.
bloodlust, terror, and death could clearly be smelled on the current floor.
The floor shook as the thousands of forms walked out.
The space twisted-
Time felt infinitely longer-
The air quivered-
The ground trembled-
The trees swayed-
Everything fell dead as soon as they came in contact with the heavy pressure and negative energy.
The monsters that were spawned were born to kill the intruders.
The only thing in their mind when they were born was "Eliminate the intruders." It was their sole reason to live.
They were born to destroy, kill and eliminate the dangers that came to harm their mother.
But it was this sole time that they instinctively felt fear that they forgot their mother's order.
Instead of rushing at the intruders, they tried escaping, Thus bringing their death by killing each other in order to live and escape the beings that were in front of them.
After some time the troops that began appearing from the Gate diminished.
But the aura that surrounded them was significantly higher than the ones that came before by an insurmountable margin.
A being that looked like a two-legged insect, with its massive body standing around two hundred fifty centimeters high. It resembled an ant or a mantis, and it looked like some hybrid made by an utterly depraved fiend.
Its hard exoskeleton was wreathed in freezing cold, and it glittered like diamond dust. It had a savage tail that was as long as its body and studded with countless spikes.
It had four arms tipped in razor-sharp claws, each of which was sheathed in a shiny gauntlet. It wore a disc-like amulet on a golden necklace and platinum rings around its ankles.
surrounding him were monsters of matchless might.
In front of the two-legged insect, there were two monsters that looked like a combination of a camel and a rhinoceros. The texture of their hide looked like dry brown soil with cracks on it. They were two times bigger than an adult elephant. Their back had some humps like a camel and it also had a bighorn in its head. Its feet were very sturdy and thick.
On his sides, there was some undead. They were the overlord Cronos master, and one overlord general.
Some overlord Wiseman was in the rear with some ginormous-looking turtles. The turtles were from the Zaraton race. That monster was famous in YYgdrasil because of their extremely high Defense.
The troops were separated by legions, with each legion containing five thousand skeletons. each legion was led by an Overlord general and there were 6 legions in total.
Well, each legion likely had a bit more than five thousand as they had some of Death Cavalier which rode atop red-eyed bicorns. They were also compromised with some Death knights and some Elder liches that were gathered last minute.
But still, they were not much compared to the entire army.
After all the monsters came out from the Gate it closed itself and disappeared as if it was never there. If the legendary army weren't still present one would be able to think of it as a high-level illusion.
It seemed that after making some preparations they began moving.
And as they began moving the monsters that were supposed to attack them began to flee more desperately as they trampled each other.
Boom, Boom
The earth shook with each step they took. One by one they began disappearing from this floor as they entered the cave-looking entrance.
The monsters that couldn't run away were slain easily by these other monsters that suddenly appeared in the dungeon's domain.
Every time a skeleton brought down their weapon a monster was slain. One by one the monster went reducing but the competition was fierce as the dungeon kept spawning the monster at an alarming rate.
----
'Hmm, it seems that we are advancing without a problem. The Hanzo's have already confirmed that there are no threats ahead. And although the Eyeball corpse is searching around for any high-level enemy that is concealed we haven't found anything alarming.'
This expedition that Cocytus was making was so that they could confirm if there were any dangers close to them and reinforce their knowledge about this world. They also wanted to map the area so that nothing attacked them unexpectedly or caught them off-guard.
Some of the Elder liches were directly trained by Albedo and demiurge. They were sent here to help in mapping the dungeon and Cocytus was thankful for that as he wasn't specialized in making maps.
As Cocytus walked the vicinity he passed froze because of his passive skill [Frost's aura] which covered 100 meters radius. It was currently activated because the undead took no damage from ice-type magic as they had Ice immunity it would help in killing the low-level beast like the one they were currently facing. Plus the damage it did currently was more than normal because of the current buff Ainz had given them.
Well, all his passive abilities and his overall build went to a major level because of the buff.
It was there that Cocytus remembered that his master hadn't used this skill a lot because there was no need. and now that he had used it in this expedition Cocytus saw how serious his master was taking it.
After some minutes, the undead had already slain every monster that was located in the room.
Cocytus began giving his orders.
5 of the 6 legions were assigned to explore the major paths that lead to other rooms. The last legion was assigned to stay in the current room to guard it and also to pick the drops.
Cocytus was with the last legion so he stayed in the room to wait for the other legions to finish exploring the rooms and paths that were currently visible.
In this mission even if Ainz wanted to give each monster a [infinite haversack] for them to pick up drops he didn't have nearly enough for all the army.
It was then that Cocytus saw what some of the Nazarick Old guarders were doing. As each one of them had a small backpack(quivers) that held their bows and arrows, they began to pick the drops and place them there.
It was something Cocytus hadn't thought of, the only idea that he had was giving some [infinite haversacks] to some of the elder liches so that they were the ones who held the drops. It seems that even the undead that his master gave him were smarter so Cocytus felt a little ashamed.
There were some figures - in front of some [Mirror of remote viewing]- that were watching every move Cocytus made. They were discussing between themselves some of the mistakes he made and what he was doing right.
"So Demiurge, what do you think about the set of summoned monsters that Cocytus picked?" Albedo asked as she turned to look at the figure next to her.
"what about them?" Aura asked as she didn't see anything wrong with the set of monsters that Cocytus picked.
"I think he could've picked a better set but the set he choose is still good," Demiurge answered as he focused on what was happening in the mirror.
"Mhm, But still... I think there were various mistakes he made that could be avoided easily." Albedo said as her brows scrunched up a little.
"Mistakes!?" Three voices were heard as they expressed their shock.
"Yes, let's talk about what some of the mistakes are, Firstly he wasted some of his space in summoning 3 eyeball corpses and 4 Hanzos." Albedo explained to Aura mare and Shalltear.
"Why summoning them was a mistake?"
"Well it isn't totally a mistake but he summoned much more than needed. You see Shalltear, He has already sent the eyeball corpses and Hanzos ahead to find if there is any danger but saw that there isn't any at the moment. That is a misconception he has you see because the monster only spans when there are people or something that it can sense entering in that certain area. So sending Hanzos and eyeball corpses that are adept in infiltration and can hide their auras is a mistake in the first place as they will not collect any information in advance because the dungeon can't sense them. So picking a lot of monsters that are adept at information gathering was a mistake that he could have avoided because he didn't need that many."
"Ohhh, And how could he have avoided that?" Aura asked.
"We had a meeting with Ainz-sama in the morning talking all about the preparations and making some plans in case something unexpected happened but in no time did Cocytus ask about how the dungeon worked nor the monsters that could appear. So that in itself was a mistake, he had to ask about it because it is crucial to have information about the place he was going to enter. That was his responsibility as a leader that was going to lead an expedition"
Aura, Mare, and shalltear nodded as if they understood what happened and they saw that it really could have been avoided if Cocytus was a bit more cautious.
"Well, He will see his mistakes later on and reflect on them. Up until now, it seems that nothing challenging has happened."
---------
-Ha, HAAh, HAah
a heavy panting was heard in the darkness, It seemed as if the person was in his last breaths trying to inhale as much air as he could before dying.
'WHAT WAS THAT. WHAT IN THE WORLD WAS THAT, I NEED TO GET OUT QUICKLY. OR... OR I'LL DIE I'LL REALLY DIE.' That was what he was thinking as he hurried along the hidden paths he knew.
He was far away coming out of a hidden path to see if there was anything abnormal with this floor because some information he got from his God Pointed out that this was the only floor that was close to the surface that wasn't really affected by the dungeon breaks.
He never expected to see something this horrendous in his life. Right now he was sure there was another dungeon break and it seemed that those creatures that were a nightmare caused it. He was very far away and he still could feel the terrifying aura they had. The only thing that he could call a good chance was that the creatures weren't going toward the upper floors but towards the lower floors. That was the only good thing.
He had to return at all cost and tell inform his God of what was happening on the lower floors. So he began to take this quickest way he knew so that the information could be delivered because this could help them prepare for what was coming because who knew if they would decide to go outside and destroy everything.
They had to prepare because if the army decided to come out of the dungeon it would be the end of humanity. He had a feeling that the monsters would decide to come out because he saw that not even the dungeon could control them as it began to spawn monsters to eliminate the army of monsters.
As he was thinking all of this he came across the first hidden village that contained the Xenos.
He had a favor to ask them and they couldn't refuse it even if they were to die because it concerned the new monsters that appeared in the dungeon.
He would ask them to tail them and get any information they could because this concerned if they lived or died.
----------
Fire!
Cocytus was currently on the 56th floor and had encountered a large number of wyverns so they changes formation and had the old guarders shoot their magical arrows.
Thousands of Magic arrows flew trailing behind it was the color of the element behind each arrow and it looked very colorful as each arrow was from a different element. arrows with green, red, brown, black, purple, and blue tips hit the wyverns and killed them without giving them a chance to throw their magical fireballs.
The thousands of arrows and the magical stone fell as if there was a hailstorm.
This has been going on for a while because it seemed that with every floor they passed the bigger the floor was and as the floor was bigger the more space it had available and the more monsters could fit. The number of monsters they encountered was increasing to an enormous amount and the difficulty went increasing, as the monsters were stronger.
Well at least for Cocytus he felt that it was all the same as they were easy to deal with, the numbers were the only problem but they only needed a minute to kill them all. The most time-consuming task was picking up the magical stones, It took more time than killing the weak monsters.
They moved forward and picked up the magical stones without disrupting the formation, they also picked the magical arrows and passed them to the old guarders.
After picking up all the drops they began waiting for the other legions to come out of the path they took. They had to gather first so that they could move on to the next floor. Everything was going smoothly and Cocytus felt he could complete the expedition easily.
His master told him that he only needed to complete the exploration of ten floors and he would return.
'It Seems That All The preparations were unnecessary.' Cocytus thought as he saw that there was nothing challenging in the dungeon so far.
'If I Was alone I could easily kill all the monsters faster it Seems That the army is just slowing down.' That thought came to his mind as he remembered that shalltear killed thousands of Qoagoas in a matter of seconds even though they were stronger than the monsters here in the dungeon.
It would take a bit more time for him to finish his mission as there were only four floors left for him to explore and map out.
The moment Cocytus was thinking about those things a small sound interrupted him.
"Cocytus-sama we have found some creatures that have consciousness and can talk. Do we capture them or do we kill them?"
'It seems that the overlord general has found creatures with awareness. What would demiurge or Ainz-sama do if they were here?' Cocytus thought of what he should do but after struggling for a while he came up with a decision.
"Capture. them. we. will. take. them. to. Nazarick. after. we. finish. exploring. the. 60th. floor. What. manner. of. creatures. are. they?" A puff of cold breath came out as he gave his order and ask some questions.
A raspy voice was soon heard " The creatures are all from different races. They have two lizardmen, 3 sirens, a minotaur, 4 goblins, and one harpy. There are other creatures that seem aware but it seems that they are not intellectually able so they won't be able to give us information or anything useful what do I do with them? Do I also capture them?"
"Kill. Them" Was the only reply Cocytus gave. Cocytus thought that they would only be a burden if they can't bring anything useful like the others.
After a while, the other legions began to gather as some of them brought some monsters that looked the same as the ones that the dungeon summoned.
Cocytus saw them and he knew they were the ones that could talk.
Cocytus frowned as he laid his eyes upon them because all of them were trembling and some of them had even gone unconscious they would be of no help like that.
'They have no spirit even those lizardmen seem weak and worthless. They are not brave like those lizardmen who were fighting even when they knew they would die.' Cocytus made a comparison to the lizardmen who he knew and the two lizardmen who were in front of him.
"Let's move on" Cocytus made his order as they began to march to the next floor. Although he wanted some information from the creatures he knew that he would not be able to get any because of their condition. He also did not bring anyone adept at using charm or mind-reading maybe there were some of the creatures in the army who could use charm but nobody was specialized in it so he would not take the risk of using it just so it failed and broke their minds. If that happened then he would not be able to collect any information.
The 57th floor was the same as the previous floor where only some white snakes and purple wyverns were. So the old guarders took care of them in an instant.
After picking up the magic stones and mapping the whole floor they began moving on to the next floor.
As they entered the 58th floor a warm wind was felt. But it didn't affect any of them as they were high leveled enough to take on this kind of low-level heat.
Perspiration was coming from the creatures they found here in the dungeon it seemed as if they would die if they didn't receive any kind of help to warm off the heat.
"Cast them some buffs that could help with the heat. We don't want them dying before they can give us information." Cocytus commanded the Overlord Wiseman next to him and pointed to the creatures that looked as if they were about to die.
Lava was flowing everywhere and the ground was cracked but that didn't do any environmental damage to them.
'The heat here is considered child's play compared to Demiurges floor. Even the sauna located in Nazarick is warmer than this floor.' Cocytus thought
Cocytus began comparing everything to Nazarick and saw that the dungeon fell short compared to Nazarick. It seemed that indeed Nazarick was of the best that there could be and nothing could be compared to it.
Roar!
Roars could be heard everywhere and in front of them were large red dragons that looked to be ten meters large.
The dragons began roaring and began firing a line of lava-looking breath.
"Turtle formation." A resounding warcry was heard around the battlefield as the undead who had shield lifted it up and stopped the attack. The Ragno stepped in front of Cocytus and took the attack without flinching.
Volleys upon volleys came of those attacks but all of it was stopped and no undead was killed or damaged.
Soon the attacks came to a stop and the dragons began to swoop down so they could attack again but it was all in vain.
"Archers ready your bows." Another cry was heard in the midst of the last attacks.
"Fire"
pfs, Pft, sff
Arrows whistling through the air were heard all around the battlefield.
As the old guarders were adept at handling bows none of the arrows were shot carelessly, Each arrow had a fixed target and as the arrows hit the dragons they all disappeared and dropped their magic stones and some other random drops.
Waves upon waves of dragons came and attacked like that but it was all taken care of without losing any undead.
In this attack, they received a lot of drops from the dragons aside from the magic stone. like dragon tooths, scales, hides, nails, and such.
Cocytus believed he was making a big contribution towards Nazarick and he would receive some praises directly from his master.
After finishing cleaning the current floor the paths that lead to other rooms the eyeball corpses and Hanzos came back from exploring the next floor they would be going but came with the same information they always gave.
It was there that Cocytus felt he had made a mistake in picking them as he figured out the mechanics of the dungeon.
'It seems that the dungeon only lets out monsters when it detects someone on the floor.'
Cocytus thought but his thought at the moment was a bit wrong because on the upper floors there were some monsters at the moment even though there was no one. They were moving outside and causing another dungeon break.
The lower floors didn't let out monsters for other reasons. The dungeon wanted to only summon monsters where Cocytus and his army were located it wanted to weaken them a bit so when they moved to the next floor they would be overwhelmed with the number of monsters there would be.
It also didn't want to summon monsters in the lower floors because they would have to travel up to where Cocytus and his army were and they would only be limited space and wouldn't be able to overwhelm them as if they were deeper on the lower floors where the space was bigger.
--------
The light was finally seen at the end of the tunnel and he was happy as he knew that he would be to come out of the dungeon in a few more seconds.
He would then be able to report what he saw on that floor. He would report it all so that humanity could prepare even if it was futile. They had to give it their all. Each of those monsters that he saw had the aura of the monsters that came out in the past. and each of them could destroy a whole city alone even the entire world if given time.
He would tell his master to cancel the monsterphilia and schedule the Denatus earlier than usual.
It seems that even the Gods will have to make an alliance in order to survive this because it was no joke. He knew that some of the Gods wouldn't give it any importance because they wanted the destruction and fall of the world and others simply didn't care what happened. Others would just join to amuse themselves.
The first god they Would have to Find would be Ainz Ooal Gown as he was the new strongest familia there was in Orario. They would also need to make some concessions and ask him some advice to level up like all his familia because all of them were strong, stronger than even ottar. The Strongest of the Freya familia.
He just hoped that he would not be a stuck-up God and helped them or else they would really be no hope for them. He also thought about making his God announce Ainz Ooal Gown as the leader if they made an alliance.
