chapter 35
"It's been a while. Have you made a decision?"
It was the obstetrician he had seen before. The doctor clicked the mouse without taking his eyes off the monitor. Last time, Tae-seo had come alone, but this time, he was accompanied by a man who clearly looked like the baby’s father. Even so, the doctor’s expression remained completely unchanged.
Whether the baby’s father was the famous Kang Se-heon or not, the doctor didn’t seem to care. But Tae-seo felt differently.
His gaze kept flitting back and forth between Kang Se-heon and the doctor. There was no need to hide today’s obstetrics appointment, so he had mentioned it. When Kang Se-heon offered to take him, Tae-seo had agreed without much thought.
But the moment Kang Se-heon stepped into the consultation room with him, Tae-seo found himself completely thrown off, half out of his mind with shock.
— Are you seriously not going to leave?
— I have the right to hear this too.
Since the doctor was right in front of them, Tae-seo shot a look toward the door, silently urging Se-heon to step out. But Se-heon, fully aware of what he wanted, only sank deeper into the chair instead of getting up. Irritated, Tae-seo glared at him.
What was the point of letting everyone know he was the baby’s father?
The only reason Tae-seo had tried to stop Se-heon from coming in was because he was a public figure. He didn’t want people gossiping, so he had asked him to stay out. But Se-heon didn’t listen.
Now that he was inside the consultation room, it wasn’t just the doctor—Tae-seo could feel the nurse’s lingering stares as well. She had clearly recognized Kang Se-heon. There was no way to keep it completely under wraps now. But the person who should have been the most concerned, Se-heon himself, was completely unfazed, sitting there without a hint of unease.
Tae-seo was the first to give up.
"I want to have the baby."
For all the time he had spent agonizing over it, the words came out so simply that it almost felt anticlimactic. To an outsider, it might not even seem like a significant decision.
"I’m going to have it."
But now that he had made up his mind, he had no room for doubt. He didn’t explain why he had come to this conclusion, and no one asked. The doctor simply nodded in acknowledgment, and Se-heon merely took out his phone and tapped the screen briefly.
"Have you decided on a hospital? Or would you prefer to keep meeting with me here?"
The doctor glanced at the nurse while typing on the keyboard. Now that Tae-seo had decided to keep the baby, there was suddenly a lot more to document. He had only made the decision to give birth, but he realized too late that he hadn’t considered where to do it.
Just as he hesitated, wondering if he needed to decide right now, Se-heon spoke up.
"We’ll register here."
The doctor turned to Tae-seo, silently asking for his approval. Tae-seo briefly glanced at Se-heon before giving a small nod. This was a part he had completely overlooked, so he had no reason to reject Se-heon’s decision.
With Tae-seo’s confirmation, the doctor carried on as if nothing was out of the ordinary.
"On your way out, pick up your pregnancy confirmation letter and the ultrasound photos. You’ll also need a maternity record book, so listen to the nurse’s explanation."
"Thank you."
"Alright. See you at your next appointment."
As Tae-seo rose from his seat, Kang Se-heon stood up as well. Since he had decided to keep the baby and planned to attend future check-ups, today’s consultation was over. With nothing left to do, Tae-seo turned to leave without hesitation.
"Yoon Tae-seo."
Halfway through turning around, Tae-seo straightened and looked at the doctor. This was only the second time they had met. The first time, the doctor had noticed his distress and told him to take his time thinking it over. And today, he had only asked what decision Tae-seo had made, without pressing him for details.
"You made a good choice."
The doctor’s tone was calm, entirely matter-of-fact, yet for that very reason, it didn’t feel burdensome to Tae-seo. In fact, the words carried even more weight.
"…Thank you."
"Let’s do our best until the baby is born."
With that final remark, Tae-seo was the first to leave the consultation room. Se-heon, however, didn’t immediately follow. It seemed like something had just occurred to him, because he lingered behind.
A moment later, even the nurse told Tae-seo to wait for a bit. Left alone in the hallway, he leaned against the wall, staring blankly ahead.
"A baby. I’m really having a baby…."
Absentmindedly, Tae-seo placed a hand over his stomach. He had carried this child within him for some time now, but now that he had made the decision to keep it, the feeling was entirely different.
"I became Yoon Tae-seo, I’m having a baby, and now…"
As he muttered to himself, the sound of a door opening made him look up.
Se-heon had just stepped out of the consultation room. For a brief moment, he hesitated under Tae-seo’s gaze before swiftly striding over.
"Why do you look like that?"
"What do you mean?"
"I don’t like it."
"You know that’s a totally subjective opinion, right?"
What was he supposed to do if it only bothered Kang Se-heon? Tae-seo was about to brush off the comment when suddenly, Se-heon’s fingers lightly cupped his chin, making him meet his gaze again.
"What matters is how I see you."
Se-heon’s stare was unwavering, as if he genuinely didn’t care how others perceived Tae-seo. The intensity made Tae-seo flustered, and he quickly turned his head to escape the hold.
"Alright, alright."
"What were you thinking about?"
"I was just realizing that I really am having a baby. That’s all."
Tae-seo held up both hands as if to prove he was hiding nothing. Since there really wasn’t anything else on his mind, he didn’t avoid Se-heon’s gaze.
After a moment of scrutiny, Se-heon turned away.
"Let’s go."
Tae-seo hesitated, remembering that the nurse had told him to wait. Then, he noticed the unfamiliar object in Se-heon’s hand. A small notebook-like item.
After staring at it for a moment, he realized—it was the maternity record book. The one he was supposed to pick up.
When had Se-heon taken it on his behalf?
With nothing left to do, Tae-seo had no choice but to follow Se-heon. But for some reason, he found himself unable to move as easily as before.
Why does this feel so natural?
From the very beginning, Se-heon had acted as if he knew exactly what decision Tae-seo would make.
And yet, Tae-seo still couldn’t understand a single thing about what was going on in Kang Se-heon’s mind.
I can’t just let this slide.
Even as Tae-seo followed at a slow pace, he eventually came to a stop, his gaze fixed on Kang Se-heon’s retreating back. Step by step, the distance between them grew—until, at some point, Se-heon halted and turned around to look at him.
The silent question in his eyes—Why aren’t you following?—made Tae-seo swallow dryly.
He wasn’t sure why he wanted to ask this now, but he did.
"How does it feel to be a father?"
Tae-seo clenched his fists slightly, trying to suppress the faint nervousness creeping in. He had made his decision to have the baby, but he wanted to confirm Kang Se-heon’s feelings once more.
A lot could have changed while he was firming up his resolve. If Se-heon had changed his mind and didn’t want the baby… well, then Tae-seo would raise the child on his own.
It would be a little lonely, but just as Se-heon had respected his decision, Tae-seo was prepared to fully respect his as well.
While Tae-seo swallowed another dry gulp, waiting for his answer, Se-heon briefly averted his gaze, scanning their surroundings. He glanced at a couple passing by, then at the medical staff bustling around in their coats.
How much time passed like that?
Eventually, Se-heon’s gaze swept back to Tae-seo.
"All I can think about is wanting to take care of everything for you."
"What does that even mean?"
Tae-seo couldn’t stop the faint smile that curled his lips as he walked toward him.
"If someone overheard, they’d think I’m the baby, not the one having it."
"It means I want to fulfill my role as a father. For both you and the baby."
"I understand your feelings now."
Standing beside Se-heon, Tae-seo tilted his head up to look at him. He had heard the answer clearly—Se-heon was choosing to be a father. Now that they shared the same goal, the only thing left was to move forward together.
Tae-seo’s expression lightened considerably, and before he knew it, his pace quickened. Instead of staring at Se-heon’s back, he found himself observing the surroundings he hadn’t noticed before.
Sensing the shift in his mood, Se-heon matched his stride and spoke in a calm voice.
"By the way, did you tell them?"
It was a simple enough question, but Tae-seo immediately halted. His lips parted slightly, but he hesitated, struggling with how to respond. His reaction already provided an answer, but Se-heon waited patiently.
"…Not yet."
After a moment, Tae-seo awkwardly ran a hand through his hair—the same spot his mother, Kim Mi-kyung, had affectionately patted that morning.
He needed to tell them. But the timing was difficult.
Still, if he kept using they’re too busy as an excuse, wouldn’t that just sound like a weak justification?
Because of that, Tae-seo found it hard to say anything else.
"I have to tell them."
But the words he finally managed to get out sounded more like an empty promise than a real commitment.
Se-heon reached out, gently lowering Tae-seo’s raised hand before smoothing down his tousled hair—as if trying to ease the mess of thoughts swirling inside him.
"If it’s too hard for you to say—"
"It’s not."
Tae-seo hurriedly lifted a hand to cut off any potential misunderstanding.
"It’s just that I haven’t been able to meet them properly. This isn’t something I can say over the phone."
"Alright. Let me know if you need me."
"If I call, are you going to come running?"
"I’ll show up before you even need to call."
"That’s reassuring."
Even though they were just exchanging playful banter, the heavy feeling in Tae-seo’s chest quickly eased.
