chapter 34
Kang Se-heon was flipping through a stack of documents when the vibration in his pocket made him reach inside his jacket. At the same time, his secretary, noticing the call, silently turned his attention back to the documents. Checking the caller ID, Se-heon gestured for his secretary to approach before answering the call.
[It’s today, right?]
"Yeah."
Jin Gyu-min’s blunt question was met with Se-heon’s indifferent response. Today was the day of Tae-seo’s obstetrics appointment. There was no need to hide it—Jin Gyu-min had obviously called because he knew. Se-heon returned his attention to the documents, and beside him, his secretary quickly pulled out a tablet and began tapping the screen.
As Se-heon scanned the screen and the paperwork, Jin Gyu-min spoke again.
[Has Tae-seo decided yet? Is he keeping the baby?]
"I haven’t heard anything yet."
So that was what he was so eager to know. Se-heon’s gaze briefly flickered toward his phone before he refocused on his task. He signed at the bottom of the final approval page and placed the pen on top of the stack before passing it all to his secretary.
"Reschedule everything for today."
"Understood."
Se-heon made it clear he wouldn’t be working any further today. The moment he set the pen aside, his secretary had already picked up on his intent. With a small nod, he tucked the tablet under his arm and pulled out his phone, quickly rearranging his boss’s schedule.
Se-heon watched his secretary for a moment before lifting his phone again. Jin Gyu-min, who had been quietly listening, seemed to sense the shift and spoke up.
[You used to put work first, and now you’re clearing your entire schedule?]
"Do you have a point?"
[Shouldn’t you be the one with something to say?]
Despite being the one who called, Jin Gyu-min turned the conversation around on Se-heon instead.
"I’ll be heading over soon."
Se-heon gazed out the window.
"Whatever decision Tae-seo makes, make sure everything is ready to move accordingly."
[That’s all? You’re the father, don’t you have an opinion of your own?]
Se-heon remained silent, staring outside.
Even though he hadn’t gone to Tae-seo’s house many times, the route was already familiar. Everything about Tae-seo was like that—every meal they had shared, every moment spent together, remained vividly in his mind, even after weeks had passed.
The same went for Tae-seo’s pheromones.
That night, he had wondered if Tae-seo had deliberately appeared before him during his heat cycle, using his pheromones to form a bond and ensure they stayed connected. He had thought Tae-seo might be that kind of person—someone who used their Omega nature as a weapon, hoping to hold on to an Alpha no matter what.
But the reason Se-heon hadn’t simply ignored Tae-seo that night was because of his pheromones.
They were sweet and intoxicating—impossible to dismiss.
Even after telling Tae-seo not to cling to him over a one-night stand, it was Se-heon himself who couldn’t stop thinking about him. He had been curious about why Tae-seo hid his Omega status. He had grown distracted whenever he saw him with other women, to the point of pushing other obligations aside.
By now, Se-heon had accepted it—he had been watching over Tae-seo, paying attention to him, and he cared.
And now, the path they had walked together had reached a crossroads. Whether they would continue forward together or go their separate ways was entirely up to Tae-seo. Just like Jin Gyu-min said, shouldn’t he have a say in this, too?
"...There’s no need for me to add my thoughts."
[What the hell does that mean? Don’t tell me you already know what he’s going to—]
Before Jin Gyu-min could finish his sentence, Se-heon pressed the end call button.

As Tae-seo was getting ready to leave, he suddenly took a closer look at his reflection in the mirror. It had been a long time since he had scrutinized his own face like this—probably not since he first became Yoon Tae-seo and had stared at the mirror, trying to grasp who he had become.
Back then, he had compared himself to Seo Da-rae. He had been frustrated by how much sharper and less delicate his features were in contrast. It had felt tragic—becoming an Omega with this kind of face, being a character who had envied Kang In-hyuk’s affection but never received it.
Why did I have to end up as the villain in this story?
At the time, it had felt like he had been stripped of the right to be loved, leaving behind only a hollow sense of loss.
But now, things were different.
Tae-seo tilted his head left and right, murmuring in satisfaction.
"I think I look even better today..."
It was a handsome face. When he smiled, he seemed approachable, and he liked that he didn’t look like an Omega. Having lived most of his life as a Beta, suddenly adapting to an Omega’s life would have been much harder if he had looked overly delicate.
His sharp eyes kept him from appearing weak, which he appreciated, and his high nose bridge and smooth lips were features he found himself increasingly fond of. His darker hair suited his slightly tanned complexion better than pale skin would have.
This was Yoon Tae-seo’s face. A Tae-seo who had a different kind of charm from Seo Da-rae.
Not pretty, but striking.
The same Tae-seo who had drawn rumors for being both handsome and beautiful, just as Kang Se-heon had said.
"That’s right—I’m Yoon Tae-seo."
Any lingering resentment about why he had ended up as Tae-seo instead of Seo Da-rae, or why he had to inhabit the body of someone destined to die, had disappeared without a trace. It hadn’t faded on its own over time—it had gradually lessened through his interactions with a certain person.
The thought of that person made a natural smile spread across Tae-seo’s lips.
"Now that I think about it, if he hadn’t been there, I would’ve been in real trouble."
At first, Kang Se-heon’s unexpected presence had thrown him off. But without him, what would have happened? Would he still be clinging to the original plot, desperately trying to survive? Would he be wasting away, counting down the days like someone waiting for an inevitable death?
"I’d probably still be terrified about becoming Yoon Tae-seo."
All this time, he had thought Se-heon was just making sure he ate well, but somehow, he had ended up influencing him in unexpected ways. Tae-seo absently ran a hand over his stomach. If he kept eating well today too, he’d probably have to start worrying about gaining weight…
The fact that he could have such trivial worries now felt almost ridiculous.
"He’s not fattening me up just to eat me, right?"
Should he say that to Se-heon? Tae-seo was still debating when a sudden knock at the door made him turn.
"Yes?"
Raising his voice, he called out. The door opened, revealing Kim Mi-kyung. She glanced around his room before hesitating, as if unsure whether she should step inside.
Tae-seo quickly closed the distance between them and pulled the door open wider.
Seeing his gesture of permission, she stepped in, briefly scanning his appearance before asking,
"Are you heading out?"
"Yeah. What brings you here, Mother?"
Considering she had left early in the morning, it was surprising to see her return before sunset. Tae-seo’s curiosity was evident in his voice.
"I just stopped by for a moment and wanted to see your face before I left again."
Kim Mi-kyung lifted a folder in one hand, indicating her reason for dropping by.
"Nothing unusual happened lately, right?"
Tae-seo had told Se-heon that his parents were busy, and it seemed Mi-kyung had been feeling guilty about it. She must have decided to check on him even if only for a short while.
Tae-seo nodded slightly and glanced at the clock. There was still some time before his obstetrics appointment.
Now was probably the best time to tell her.
"Do you have some time today?"
It would be best if his father could be here too, but with their hotel construction overseas nearing completion, he knew that was asking too much. Still, at least telling his mother before heading to the hospital felt like the right decision.
But the moment he asked, her reaction was visibly flustered.
Mi-kyung glanced down at the folder in her hand, then checked her watch. It was clear just from those small actions how busy she was.
"Of course, I can make time. Just give me a moment."
And yet, despite her packed schedule, she immediately set the folder down as if Tae-seo took priority over everything else. She was already reaching for her phone, about to call her secretary to rearrange her schedule.
Tae-seo hurriedly raised a hand to stop her.
"No, it’s okay."
"Hm? But didn’t you have something to say?"
"I’ll come find you instead. That way, you won’t have to adjust your schedule."
"Well… If that’s what you want."
Kim Mi-kyung studied his expression as if to confirm he really meant it, then smiled somewhat awkwardly while holding her now-ringing phone. Guilt flickered in her gaze, her brows slightly furrowing as if she regretted not spending more time with him.
"Make sure you do come. No matter what, I can always make time for you."
"I will."
"Let’s have dinner together soon."
She ruffled his hair gently before stepping out. Even before the door closed, she had already lifted the phone to her ear, resuming work.
Tae-seo let out a quiet sigh.
He couldn’t just call and tell her he was pregnant…
Then, just as Mi-kyung was about to disappear from sight, she turned back.
"Oh, Tae-seo."
Hearing the unexpected call, Tae-seo quickly wiped the smile off his face and looked at her.
"You are coming back home, right?"
It was clear from her tone that she still remembered the last time Tae-seo had left home.
She was still worried.
So, to ease her concerns, Tae-seo nodded firmly.
"Of course. I won’t leave without telling you again."
"Good."
With a final wave, she disappeared down the hallway.
Only then did Tae-seo exhale, the weight of his past impulsive decisions settling in his chest. He had never been Yoon Tae-seo from the start, so he had never truly felt anything toward his parents before.
But now, for the first time, something inside him wavered.
Being fully accepted and loved by them—knowing they cared—was closing the emotional distance he had always kept.
Of course, there was still something that would shake them all over again soon.
"I'm heading out."
He murmured the words to no one in particular, forcing a small smile as the vibrating phone in his pocket signaled that it was time to go.
