Chapter 10: Chapter 10: Stoking the Fire.
"Brother, oh brother! My heart aches!"
"Why can't the Third Hokage understand? Is he sick in the head?"
"After all the trouble our clan went through to outlast the Second, the Third Hokage takes over and follows in his unlucky teacher's footsteps. Is he just bored?"
"You don't know, brother, I nearly talked my mouth off yesterday trying to calm our people. Can't the higher-ups keep quiet at such a critical time?"
Inside the Hyuga clan's meeting room, Patriarch Hyuga Hitoshi shakes his head helplessly as Uchiha Fugaku vents his frustrations.
There's a saying in history about officials provoking rebellion among the people.
It's not exactly fitting for the Uchiha, but it's not far off. Of course, both sides are responsible for the clan's eventual annihilation.
But the higher-ups really played a foul move this time. Not to mention Sarutobi and Danzo, who each learned a tiny bit from their teacher. But if you're going to imitate the Second Hokage's methods, you've got to have the skills!
Look at them, they tried to surveil and got caught. It's as good as telling the Uchiha outright that the village doesn't trust them, suspecting them of rebellion at any moment.
"Brother, don't spread this around, okay?"
After venting for a while, Fugaku suddenly reminds him.
He got a bit carried away, angered by the Third's actions, treating Hyuga Hitoshi as one of his own, otherwise, he wouldn't have said so much.
"Ah, we're all brothers here."
Hitoshi nods in agreement, considering Fugaku's actions. This brother has come for help.
After all, in all of Konohagakure, only he has spoken up for the Uchiha. Plus, on the battlefield, Fugaku has seen the strength of the Hyuga clan and Hitoshi's own actions.
Now visiting the Hyuga, he's likely looking to develop the Hyuga clan into a full-fledged ally of the Uchiha.
It's a normal thought.
When the two great dojutsu clans unite, the higher-ups will have to weigh their actions carefully.
So, if you think Uchiha Fugaku is brainless, you're sorely mistaken.
A good brother might well want to use the Hyuga clan as a weapon.
But what Fugaku doesn't know is that there's a tactic called turning the tables.
The higher-ups may have made a bad move, but it's actually advantageous for the Hyuga clan!
"So, brother, what do you plan to do?"
With a casual gesture, a feather fan appears in his hand, and Patriarch Hitoshi looks expectantly at brother Fugaku.
Isn't this guy cold?
Fugaku looks at Hitoshi, then ponders for a moment.
"Do you have any wise suggestions, brother?"
What can he do?
If he knew what to do, would he need to come to the Hyuga clan for support?
According to his plan, he might have to play the submissive role for a while, reducing the Uchiha clan's presence, but even that won't change the fact that the clan is under surveillance.
"Brother, this matter is actually quite simple."
Hyuga Hitoshi smiles faintly, fanning himself more vigorously, his long hair fluttering elegantly.
"I'm all ears!"
Fugaku tightens his clothes, looking serious.
"As I understand it, the Uchiha clan is tasked with the guard duty, responsible for maintaining order and security within the village, right?"
Hyuga Hitoshi's gaze twinkles, giving Fugaku a sense of alarm.
"That's correct."
"Then that's just it!"
Patriarch Hitoshi pats Fugaku's shoulder.
"As the Konohagakure guard, discovering that petty criminals are lurking, trying to gather information on Konohagakure, even brazenly monitoring every move of the guard, plotting to attack Konohagakure after getting the full picture, such wild ambition cannot be ignored by the guard. A thunderous move to capture them is both reasonable and appropriate!"
Ah, this...
Fugaku is utterly baffled.
"Are you suggesting we directly capture those who are monitoring the Uchiha?"
"Isn't that like standing up to charge, choosing to openly defy Konohagakure?"
"Brother, that doesn't seem right. If I do that, the higher-ups will likely suppress the Uchiha."
Naive!
"If you don't capture them, do you think they won't suppress you? If you tolerate it today, they'll only take more liberties tomorrow! They might even have your son to spy on you!"
Before Fugaku could finish, Hyuga Hitoshi interrupted him with a spell.
Damn...
Is it that serious?
"But those are Anbu."
Fugaku looked troubled, uncertain of what to do.
"How do you know they're Anbu?"
Hyuga Hitoshi scoffed.
"Did your Anbu inform me when they were monitoring me?"
"Speak up. Even if you slaughtered those people on the spot, it would be justified!"
"The guard team bears a great mission for the safety of the village, especially during the rebuilding phase. The village is incredibly vulnerable, making it easy for enemies to infiltrate!"
"At such a critical moment, if someone is spying on the actions of the guard team, what are they if not traitors? If you don't capture them, that's negligence on your part! If you do, it's a great merit!"
"If you let me take action, I'd throw them in the square for a public meeting and let the villagers judge these petty thieves who sneak into the village!"
"This is a damn good opportunity to gain face and reputation!"
Damn!
Does this mean I have to take action?
Fugaku looked at Hyuga Hitoshi in shock, the more he thought about it, the more sense it made!
Damn it, did you inform me when you were monitoring me?
How would I know those people were arranged by you to monitor me? What if there are spies from other ninja villages among them?
That makes too much sense!
Seeing Fugaku's reaction, Hitoshi nodded slightly.
Well.
He never thought his few words could make the Uchiha stand up and charge; this was just the beginning.
It can only be said that the higher-ups cooperated well this time.
In the original story, it seems the higher-ups' surveillance of the Uchiha was supposed to start later, but unexpectedly, it has already begun.
First, they falsely accused the Uchiha of controlling the Nine-Tails, and then they started monitoring them directly.
What do the higher-ups want to do?
Are they picking an auspicious day to exterminate us Uchiha?
I think you, the old village chief, are very bad!
"Brother, your words make a lot of sense, but the clan isn't ruled by my word alone, so I have to go back and discuss it with the clan members."
After a brief consideration, Fugaku spoke solemnly.
"But brother, I will never forget the favor of your advice."
Tsk.
Where has this gotten us?
This is only the first step. Once the Uchiha truly have the courage to capture someone, they can regain some initiative!
When the Uchiha taste the sweetness, that's when the real fire will be stoked.
The old village chief's legitimate reason for monitoring the Uchiha is suspicion that they are the masterminds behind the Nine-Tails disturbance, right?
In this matter, the Uchiha must react fiercely, considering the issue from the perspective of a victim. Constantly retreating will only make others think you have something to hide!
Patriarch Hitoshi's face was calm. According to his plan, if the Uchiha don't tear into the old village chief, causing a storm throughout the village, then he doesn't deserve the Hyuga name!
After all, the more fiercely they tear into each other, the less attention the Hyuga side will attract.
As for the Uchiha clan not being ready to openly defy the higher-ups?
"It's alright," Hyuga Hitoshi thought, "the 'restless' clan members will help brother Fugaku take action. When the time comes, he can only choose to stand with his clan and charge at the old village chief."
Of course.
Hyuga Hitoshi always felt that he wasn't really betraying brother Fugaku. In fact, in a way, he was saving the Uchiha clan!
The entanglement between that clan and Konohagakure was a historical issue.
It's clear to say that since the day the Uchiha joined Konohagakure, they have never truly integrated, and the higher-ups have always been suppressing them.
Until now, the conflict has become nearly irreconcilable.
If things continue, once the dutiful son grows up, the clan's fate of annihilation is unavoidable.
But consider it from another angle: the stronger your stance, the more the higher-ups will fear you. The more aggrieved you appear, the more innocent the Uchiha will seem. This is a matter of principle.
Besides, since faces will be torn eventually, why should the Uchiha hold back?
There are countless paths to the future. Having your own son annihilate the entire clan, leaving only himself, is already the worst outcome. So why not struggle a bit more?
"Brother, you need to know."
Standing up, looking at Fugaku who was about to take his leave, Hyuga Hitoshi's expression was sincere.
"This Konohagakure, it was established by the Senju and the Uchiha!"
Damn.
What kind of Shit is the old village chief?!
Why should his brother suffer this indignity?
Why not dare to fight the old village chief?
