Chapter 1 - I Am the Heavenly Demon (1)
The Heavenly Demon’s appearance was anything but merciful.
His eyes always burned red like embers, and his fangs were long, resembling the tusks of a beast.
His body, muscular and solid like a boulder, was too immense to be called human, and his face was so terrifying that even the grim reapers from the underworld would flee.
Despite not being particularly vicious or cruel, the Heavenly Demon couldn’t even engage in a normal conversation with others.
“Hmm.”
The Heavenly Demon let out a low sound.
But the assassin, who met the gaze of the Heavenly Demon, trembled violently.
The Black Cloud Dark Emperor.
The assassin, bearing such a grand name, had been commissioned by the Martial Alliance to assassinate the Heavenly Demon, who ruled over the martial world.
But before he could even make his move, he was discovered by the Heavenly Demon and forced into the open.
“Until now, no one aside from the orthodox factions has ever dared to point a sword at me.”
Nodding his head, the Heavenly Demon looked down at the Black Cloud Dark Emperor.
“How brave.”
Seeing the fear in the assassin’s eyes, the Heavenly Demon smiled with an expression that could almost be described as… benevolent.
However, the assassin let out a shriek that was more like a scream of despair.
“D-don’t come closer!”
“Don’t order me around.”
The Heavenly Demon was simply speaking his mind.
But with his fangs bared and his red eyes glowing ominously, his expression alone sent the assassin’s soul flying away.
“Aaah! I said don’t come closer!”
Thud.
In the end, the assassin drew a poisoned dagger and slit his own throat.
Rather than suffer under the torturous grip of the demon known as the Heavenly Demon—infamous as the Lord of Hell and the greatest martial artist of the ages—the assassin chose a swift death.
“What is this?”
The Heavenly Demon looked down at the corpse of the assassin with a bewildered expression.
“Madman.”
Mount Zaha, on the Snowy Peaks.
The Heavenly Demon was practicing his martial arts there.
Boom.
A simple punch split the ground, and the clouds in the sky parted.
Despite having surpassed the pinnacle of what humans could achieve, he continued to train.
There was no one who could rival him.
Since the day he stepped into the martial world, having achieved the pinnacle of martial arts, he had never lost a single battle.
In just three years, he had conquered the entire martial world, placing all factions under his feet.
There was no equal to him in the world.
Yet, even so, he continued to train daily, immersing himself in books within his solitary cave.
—One day, there will be someone.
The Heavenly Demon believed deep down.
One day, someone would appear who could make his body tremble, someone who would push him to use all his strength in a battle.
Eventually, a worthy rival would appear.
With a flash of light, a massive meteor fell from the sky, crashing into the courtyard of a traditional Korean house.
Boom!
The earth shook with a deafening explosion, and a blue light erupted from the crater left by the meteor.
The blue light began to sketch out intricate, mysterious patterns on the ground.
Tinkle.
As the sound of stardust sprinkling echoed, the patterns vanished, and from within the thick dust, a dark figure groaned.
“Ugh.”
A red glow emanated from the figure, buried beneath the shattered remains of a tree.
As the dust cleared with the wind, the figure’s form slowly revealed itself under the moonlight.
It was a muscular man, clad in a sleeveless garment that left his burly arms exposed.
His disheveled hair was tied up in a topknot, and thick, vein-covered arms pulsed as though they were alive.
Creak.
At that moment, the sliding door to the house opened, and a girl chewing on dried meat stepped out into the yard.
“What was that sound? What the…?”
The girl’s eyes widened as she dropped the piece of dried meat from her mouth, her gaze locking onto the glowing figure in the rubble.
“Who… who are you?”
The figure, with muscles resembling a heavyweight bodybuilder, eyes glowing red, and dressed in a tattered martial artist’s robe, looked somewhat familiar.
“Gouki?”
The muscular figure in front of her resembled a final boss character from a popular 90s fighting game.
“What’s a ‘Gouki’?”
“Then who are you?”
“Who am I, you ask?”
The muscular man, still lying in the rubble, looked up at the girl with a solemn expression and declared in a low voice.
“I am the Heavenly Demon.”
The Heavenly Demon.
The strongest martial artist under the heavens, who could tear the skies with his fists and split the earth with his legs.
Feared as the Lord of Demons, the ruler of the demonic path, the sky of the demonic world, the Lord of Fear, a bloodthirsty and cold-blooded killer…
But in reality, he was nothing more than a simple martial arts fanatic who had been practicing in seclusion since childhood.
However, the girl, who knew nothing of the Heavenly Demon, blinked in confusion.
“Heavenly Demon?”
“Indeed.”
“Is that your name?”
“You mean you’ve never heard of me?”
The Heavenly Demon frowned.
No one in the martial world, from the four seas to the eight corners of the land, did not know the name of the Heavenly Demon.
Yet, the girl stared at him with wide, innocent eyes, as if she had no idea who he was.
‘She’s serious.’
Her eyes were pure and transparent, revealing no trace of deceit.
Letting out a deep sigh, the Heavenly Demon kindly clarified.
“It’s not my name, it’s a title. It means I am the strongest warrior who dominates the martial world.”
“Okay, so?”
“For some reason, I was suddenly engulfed in a great light, and when I woke up, I found myself here.”
It was then that the girl noticed the large tree in the yard, completely shattered, and grabbed her hair in distress.
“My treasure! My spirit tree!”
The tree was broken into pieces like shattered glass, with only a large stump remaining.
Amidst the wreckage, various glowing fragments were scattered, slowly losing their light.
“Aaaah!”
The girl dropped to her knees, wailing.
“What is this? Why is it destroyed?”
“Why are you so upset?”
“That tree is a spirit tree!”
The girl pointed to the colorful fragments scattered around.
“Do you even know what a spirit tree is?”
“Is it valuable?”
“Of course, it is!”
Watching the girl shout in anger, the Heavenly Demon’s expression grew complicated.
‘I, the Heavenly Demon, stand above even the great masters of old…’
As the ruler of the Ten Thousand Demons Palace and heir to the demonic lineage of the Divine Demon, the Heavenly Demon had the authority to look down on even the head of the Shaolin Sect.
Yet, here was a girl, barely eighteen by the looks of her, speaking to him so casually.
“The martial world has fallen so low. How dare a mere girl speak down to me, the Heavenly Demon?”
“Martial world? Heavenly Demon?”
Recalling a web novel she had read occasionally, the girl frowned.
“A martial arts geek?”
“I don’t understand what you’re saying, but if you’re going to look down on me, reveal your inner strength. We can settle it by rank.”
“Rank?”
The girl smirked and scoffed.
“How old are you?”
“How old?”
“You look about the same age as me. You may look fierce, but your skin is so smooth.”
“Hmph. My youthful appearance is maintained by my internal energy, which has already surpassed the realm of the pre-celestial divine.”
“What kind of nonsense is that?”
The girl looked at him, bewildered, as the Heavenly Demon spoke with a serious expression.
“Do not be shocked, girl. I have already surpassed forty and am nearing fifty.”
“So, you’re in your forties?”
“Exactly.”
“That’s still young.”
The girl pursed her lips and shook her head.
“Sorry, but I’m much older than you.”
“What did you say?”
“I won’t ask you to speak formally, but please don’t bring up age. It’s a sore subject.”
Seeing the girl sigh like a battle-worn elder, the Heavenly Demon’s jaw dropped.
‘Could this tiny girl really be an ancient being who has reversed her aging?’
Now that he looked closely, it seemed like a faint blue mist was swirling around her body.
It was a force that only those who had mastered the absolute pinnacle of martial arts could sense.
“Well, anyway, what’s going on here? Did you break the spirit tree?”
The girl, staring at the Heavenly Demon’s thick arms, pointed to the shattered fragments.
“Was it an explosion? Or was it your strength? How did you get past the guardian spirits?”
The Heavenly Demon shook his head, watching her speak rapidly.
“This has nothing to do with me.”
“What?”
“I was just caught in a flash of light and ended up here.”
…Though it sounded like a poor excuse.
After all, he was still leaning against the stump of the spirit tree with his massive arms spread wide.
“Hmm.”
Feeling the girl’s intense gaze, the Heavenly Demon quickly rose from the wreckage.
Crack.
With his movement, the remaining stump of the spirit tree was crushed, and the last traces of it disappeared completely.
