‘Where is she hiding.’
During the journey here, Calix had been overcome by all kinds of destructive urges numerous times a day.
The thought that he might not find Asella was unbearable. Imagining his runaway wife away from him, and being happy somewhere with someone else made his mind reel.
If it hadn’t been for that damn tea he drank at the same time every day, his madness would have already erupted long ago.
He took a few deep breaths. The faint fragrance of her lingered in the air, calmed his overwhelming anxiety and fury somewhat.
‘Soon now…’
They were almost there. The moment Asella’s presence here was confirmed, all the exits out of the city were blocked. She had no way of escaping this place.
“My lord. We’ve received word that her highness has been spotted near the city gates.”
A soldier dropped to one knee as he delivered the news, and Calix abruptly sprang up from his seat in response.
Without even realizing he was rushing, Calix leapt down the stairs three steps at a time. He swiftly mounted the waiting horse and lashed it harshly with the reins. The accelerating horse charged furiously down the thoroughfare.
It was mere moments before he reached his destination. Even as the winded horse snorted and breathed raggedly, Calix remained composed.
The coachman, led in by the soldiers, spoke in a pale-faced panic.
“I-I’m certain I saw her board the carriage! But when I opened the gates for inspection…”
Trailing off, the coachman nervously glanced at the grand duke, his face etched with fear. The coachman, who a moment ago had counted himself lucky to have deep pockets, now feared for his life.
Yet Calix paid the man no heed. His gaze fixated on the darkness of the mountain’s entrance, where the lights of searching soldiers pierced through the night, illuminating the surroundings.
“Ryzen”
At Calix’s summons, Ryzen promptly reported the progress.
“I’ve calculated the reachable radius by considering the time the coachman drove the carriage. I’ve sent people to block off all dangerous areas like cliffs and ravines, and we’re now narrowing the search area from the outside inward.”
“……”
“Just give us a little more time, and we’ll have good news soon….”
“No.”
Calix cut off Ryzen’s words.
To ask him to wait was nonsense…
He had reached his limit…
The unquenchable thirst had become unbearable…
He had to find her and have her right before his eyes.. Immediately.
Calix’s sharp eyes gleamed with deep longing. The heat that could not be concealed permeated his slowly parting lips.
“I’ll go myself.”
She was a woman who had climbed that rugged mountain to get away from him. Even if she was found, she did not seem likely to come down obediently.
But he could not bear the thought of soldiers laying a hand on his wife. If there were such a person, he would surely cut off the hand that dared touch his wife without hesitation.
“Don’t you dare touch a single hair on her body.”
When the wife, who had gone for a walk, returned, it was only right for the husband to be there and welcome her.
At Calix’s quiet voice, Ryzen bowed his head. His steps as he climbed the steep mountain path were filled with determination.
It was time to meet his wife.
