“Ah, I had the doctor called over because the child was unwell! After that, she asked me to prepare a meal, so I made and sent it up. That’s all there is to it!”

The inn keeper’s face was now ghastly pale, almost unbearable to look at. Not only had armed soldiers suddenly barged in, but now the Grand Duke himself was interrogating him.

“When did they leave?”

“Th-that was, in the afternoon… Hic!”

The vague response from the inn keeper was crushed under Calix’s stern expression, causing him to stumble over.

“A-.. Around 5 o’clock in the afternoon, when they had an early dinner!”

The inn keeper replied with panic in his voice, his whole body expressing a desperate desire to stay alive.

“Where is the room you said she stayed in?”

“L-..Let me show you!”

The inn keeper rushed upstairs. He was immensely fortunate that the room had not yet been cleaned. The thought of what might have happened had another guest already occupied the room sent a chill down his neck. He quickly opened the door and called out.

“It’s this one!”

When Calix gestured for him to go, the inn keeper practically fled, bowing deeply as he disappeared.

“Keep watch in case she returns to the vicinity.”

“Yes, sir!”

The soldiers departed, leaving Ryzen standing by the door. Calix stepped into the room alone.

“…….”

His gaze slowly swept across the interior.

This was the space where Asella had stayed for just a day. Despite her hasty escape, the room was surprisingly neat and tidy. The only signs of disarray were the slightly rumpled bedding and the uncleaned tableware. Other than that, it was as neat as her usual demeanor.

It had been three days already. The pursuit he had thought would end quickly was taking far longer than he had anticipated. Even while traveling with a ten-year-old child, she had managed to leave nearly no trace of her movements.

‘Magic breaks the trail in the middle and leaves only faint traces of where it has passed.’

Whenever this happened, the mage of Karma would search the faint magical trails lingering in the air to find the direction. Without them, it would have been nearly impossible to even attempt it, but Calix was still unsatisfied with their performance.

As time passed, his impatience grew, and his anxiety grew more intense. It had reached the point where he had to take matters into his own hands. He had cleared the Grand Duchy and followed Asella’s trail down here.

‘Where is she hiding.’
