It had been only a few days since they were brought down to the basement of the Grand Duchy castle.
It had been enough time to experience hell. The two were now on the verge of losing their sanity due to the horrific torment. They had begged to be killed, but even that was not allowed.
“Ryzen, how long has Asella been suffering at the hands of these people?”
“Seven years, two months and four days, Sir.”
A slight twist appeared on the otherwise expressionless face. The words that then came out of Calix’s mouth were so terrifying that even the Karma torturers involuntarily swallowed their saliva.
“Was it ten chests of gold bars?”
‘I believe in repaying things tenfold.’ His voice was dry, devoid of any emotion.
Since then, the flesh of the two men were carved away and their bones twisted by the hands of the torturers. When their bodies were reduced to shreds, all kinds of medicinal treatments were poured in to keep them from dying, only to have the same agony repeat.
Yet the Grand Duke himself had not directly interrogated them, not until now.
Calix casually scanned the tools lining the walls, then turned his gaze to Philip and Anthony.
“Tell me, where did my wife go?”
They shook their heads frantically, their faces filled with terror.
“W-W-We don’t know! W-We don’t know anything…!”
“Oh.”
A sigh-like sound escaped Calix’s lips. Suddenly, his expression turned as cold as ice. A deadly aura seemed to sweep across his sculpted, god-like face.
“Is it because you can’t understand what I’m saying…”
Soon, Philip’s agonizing scream echoed through the basement.
However, Calix’s face remained indifferent throughout. Even as he pressed the searing hot iron into the man’s bare abdomen, he didn’t flinch whatsoever. The sizzling sound of burning flesh and the nauseating stench filled the basement.
“That useless mouth can’t even give a proper answer, just unnecessary noise.”
At his master’s words, Ryzen quickly shoved a cloth into Philip’s mouth. Only a muffled groan could barely escape his obstructed throat.
“Much better.”
Philip rolled his eyes back and thrashed about, but it was a futile struggle. The clanking of the tightly bound iron chains echoed incessantly. He convulsed violently from the excruciating pain before finally fainting and slumping down.
The color drained completely from Anthony’s face as he witnessed it all. Calix, turning to face him, fixed his gaze on Anthony.
“You. Any idea?”
Trembling in dreadful terror, his trousers soon dampened as a yellow puddle formed at his feet. Ryzen wrinkled his nose at the foul stench and stepped aside.
“Where my wife might have gone.”
“Th-That is…”
Anthony mumbled, unable to form a coherent response. Saying he didn’t know would surely invite the same fate as his father next to him.
“Places the Grand Duchess might have gone…”
“Of course you wouldn’t know.”
The answer came from Calix’ lips. Soon, a gag was also forced into Anthony’s mouth. An animal-like scream erupted, his convulsing body thrashing madly, only further inciting Calix wrath.
‘All because of you fools.’
Calix threw away the now cooled piece of iron and picked up the iron tongs. Without hesitation, he plunged it into the where Anthony was previously injured and twisted it.
Anthony’s body convulsed violently and contorted in a hideous manner. The stench of blood filled the underground prison, devoid of a single ray of sunlight.
‘All because of you worthless insects.’
Anger seeped through Calix’s gritted teeth.
They were the ones who tormented and abused Asella. They met the fitting end of vermin-like creatures. Calix had neatly taken care of them in her place, so shouldn’t she be grateful and pleased?
But instead, his wife had escaped.
Deceived him.
Calix remembered her petite figure that had nestled in his embrace. Her warm and smooth body, her unique, murmuring voice pleading for help, and her grateful face with moistened eyes, all were vivid in his mind.
And yet, she had done this.
She pretended to obediently enter the cage, making him feel at ease, and as soon as he opened the door, she flew away as if she had been waiting. It was as if she hadn’t had the slightest intention of staying by his side in the first place.
It was a perfect deception. An unmistakable act of betrayal.
‘’…’’
With a chilling sound, the iron tong he had been holding dropped to the floor. Calix turned away from Anthony, who was frothing at the mouth and most-likely gone mad from the pain.
He took the handkerchief Ryzen had handed to him, wiped off the blood and gore from his hands and uttered a brief command.
“Keep him alive.”
“Yes, Your Excellency.”
The torturers of Karma surrounded the two unconscious men. Ignoring the sound of cold water being poured into buckets behind them, Calix stepped out of the basement. Ryzen quietly followed behind him.
There was anger in Calix’s footsteps as he walked down the corridor.
Ryzen, who watched his master without revealing his unease, couldn’t say a word. Cold sweat kept dripping from his forehead, and his mouth became dry. It was the worst situation. He couldn’t predict what would unfold in the future.
‘How should I handle this…’
