The God of Ice and Fire at Hogwarts

Chapter 212: Ancient magic

Mr. Foley smiled at Lynn and Irina and introduced himself:

"Hello, Mr. Rowle, Miss Lowell. My name is Carol Foley, Irwin's father. Welcome. Come to Foley Manor!"

After Mr. Foley finished speaking, Irwin stepped forward.

He then said to them: "My father promised to let me take you to visit Foley Manor and allow you to read our family's magical book collection."

So, Lynn and Irina followed Irwin as they made their way to the enormous Foley Manor.

On the way to the manor, Irina asked curiously:

"Irwin, does your family's collection also contain a large number of advanced dark magic books?"

Hearing this, Irwin, who was walking ahead, turned around. Seeing the expression on Lynn and Irina's faces, he realized that Irina didn't know the specifics of the pure-blood family's situation.

Irwin explained to Irina:

"No, in fact, the book collection of each pure-blood family has a different focus. For example, the Rowle family has books on dark magic, the Weasley family's collection focuses on alchemical magic, and even the Potter family, who are pure-bloods, once had some books on blood magic."

Upon hearing Irwin's words, both Irina and Lynn were somewhat surprised.

Although Lynn knew that each pure-blood family's collection had its own focus, he wasn't familiar with the focuses of other pure-blood families' collections.

After learning that the Weasley family's collection centered around alchemy and magic, many things that had confused Lynn for a long time began to make sense.

Alchemy magic is the combination of alchemy and magic, and the flying car modified by Mr. Weasley is a typical product of alchemical magic.

If the Weasley family possesses a large collection of alchemical magic books, then it's no surprise that Mr. Weasley is proficient in alchemy, and the future Weasley twins are able to invent so many novel alchemical products.

After all, the only way to give a wizard who has never systematically studied alchemy the ability to use alchemy to transform things is by using alchemical magic.

"So, what is the focus of the Foley family's collection of books?"

Lynn asked quietly.

Irwin looked at Lynn, smiled proudly, and said, "Ancient Magic!"

Hearing this, both Lynn and Irina looked surprised.

Ancient magic is incredibly powerful. A single spell of ancient magic could even destroy an entire city in an instant!

Many of the powerful family magics used by modern wizards are simplified versions of those ancient magics.

"Our family's books record a lot of ancient magic, but the way these books record it isn't to teach us a new magical system from scratch. Instead, it's a process of working backward."

Irwin explained.

"Working backward?" Irina looked at him with some confusion.

Irwin nodded and said affirmatively, "Yes, working backward! As we all know, many powerful spells, including fire spells, are simplified from ancient magic, and what we need to do is reverse-engineer them. We simplify the magic, then reverse it and restore it to its original ancient form."

Lynn asked:

"But if these simplified spells can be used to deduce the ancient magic, why hasn't anyone in the Foley family used ancient magic for the past hundred years?"

Upon hearing this, Irwin smiled bitterly and replied:

"Although this method of deducing ancient magic is easier than learning ancient magic from scratch, the threshold is just too high. It's been high for hundreds of years. None of us in the Foley family are qualified to practice ancient magic."

"Why's that?" Lynn asked.

Irwin explained:

"The prerequisite to practicing ancient magic is that the wizard must be able to simplify it into contemporary magic and practice it to an extremely proficient level. This proficiency requires the wizard to be able to perform the spell flawlessly — without any wand or spoken incantation!"

"For example, one ancient spell called Thunderbolt requires the wizard practicing it to be able to silently cast weather-based spells without using a wand. And that's not enough. Simply casting the spell silently and without a wand through gestures doesn't meet the requirements. It requires the wizard to release the weather spell with a single thought, without any action!"

Irwin continued.

Upon hearing Irwin's words, both Lynn and Irina fell silent.

The prerequisites for practicing ancient magic were simply too difficult, and it was almost impossible for ordinary wizards to meet them.

No wonder no one in the Foley family had been able to practice ancient magic for hundreds of years. With such a high bar, there are probably fewer than a handful of wizards in the entire magical world qualified to practice it in the last few centuries!

"I thought maybe we could give it a try."

After a long silence, Lynn finally spoke.

With Lynn's affinity for fire and Irina's affinity for ice, they had long been able to cast fire and freezing spells silently and without wands, respectively.

Irina had even relied on her talent to turn the freezing spell, initially designed as a single-target curse, into a long-range damage spell, such as the ice field.

Perhaps Irina's process of deducing the Frozen Curse in the Ice Realm could be considered a form of reverse deduction, similar to what Irwin had described.

Lynn stood still without moving, and a red flame appeared out of nowhere in front of him before falling into the palm of his hand.

"This… to be able to release a fire spell with a single thought? It was actually Lynn who drove away the lingering soul of the mysterious man and killed the basilisk that had lived for thousands of years!" Irwin exclaimed in shock, his face filled with disbelief.

Seeing Lynn casting the spell next to her, Irina lowered her head and thought for a moment. Then, as a thought crossed her mind, five ice spikes materialized from nowhere in front of her, swirling around her.

These five ice spikes naturally evolved from the Freezing Curse. Since Lynn was the first to deduce the magic, it wasn't difficult for her to meet the requirements for practicing ancient magic.

At that moment, Irwin was left speechless, completely astonished.

Originally, he thought the main purpose of today was simply to bring Lynn and Irina to visit his family's book collection as a gesture of sincerity.

But he never expected that Lynn and Irina would actually meet the prerequisites for practicing ancient magic, far surpassing his expectations.

However, for Irwin, there was nothing to lose if he allowed Lynn and Irina to learn his family's ancient magic.

After all, they had been comrades for a long time, right?
