Chapter 9
### The Next Morning
Standing at the entrance, Kite struck a pose and called out to Yeo-ul.
“Miss Yeo-ul! It’s finally time for some freedom! For the next three days, while others are toiling away, we get to do whatever we want and have a blast. Understood?”
“Sounds great!”
Yeo-ul, excited, mimicked Kite’s raised hand.
Lantus, seeing this, frowned, but Yeo-ul was just happy.
Walking on her own for an outing was something she had never dreamed of when she was in pain.
Moreover, contrary to Lantus’s worries, Kite proved to be an excellent tour guide.
Every snack he recommended was delicious!
“Miss Yeo-ul, the next snack I recommend is bear bread. It’s common but oddly addictive. Every time I come to the Holy Kingdom, I make sure to have one.”
“What’s bear bread?”
“It’s bread shaped like a bear’s face with jam inside. There’s strawberry jam, grape jam, and even chocolate syrup.”
“I want to try the chocolate one.”
“You can try a bite of each. It’s all on the boss’s dime anyway.”
“Hehe, okay.”
Kite’s carefree and cheerful demeanor made everything more enjoyable, and he took care of Yeo-ul as if she were his own niece.
Thanks to him, Yeo-ul could simply enjoy the outing.
“Miss Yeo-ul, it’s rewarding to go out with you.”
Kite smiled, watching Yeo-ul happily sip her strawberry juice.
“Me?”
“Yes, because you genuinely enjoy even the smallest things. It’s very rewarding for someone showing you around.”
“But everything is really tasty and fun!”
She was genuinely happy.
Yeo-ul had not been able to eat for a long time.
Her muscles had weakened to the point where she couldn’t chew or swallow food properly.
When she got a gastrostomy tube (a device that directly supplies food to the stomach), her brother held her hand and cried a lot.
Even though Yeo-ul had prepared herself for it long before.
Looking back, her brother couldn’t stand seeing her lose anything permanently.
More than she did herself.
“I couldn’t do much before. So now that I can do whatever I want, I’m really, really happy. Truly.”
Those who have lost everything can find joy in anything.
Just being able to eat freely made her happy now.
If she could wish for a bit more, she would want her brother to see her healthy.
‘But that’s impossible.’
Swallowing her regret, Yeo-ul smiled brightly at Kite.
“I’m so happy, it feels like I’m dreaming. A dream I never want to wake up from.”
“You won’t have to wake up. Wizardian will be with you, Miss Yeo-ul.”
Kite patted her shoulder gently and then turned his gaze, frowning slightly.
He felt a bit uneasy inside.
‘Is this why the boss was so insistent?’
He wondered why Lantus cherished Yeo-ul so much after just one day of knowing her, but now he understood.
‘All I did today was buy her a few snacks.’
Even dressing it up nicely, he had just bought her some treats.
‘And that’s enough for her to say it’s a dream she never wants to wake up from.’
At first, he thought it was just because she was a child.
Kids her age laugh at anything.
‘But this feels different.’
It reminded him of the joy and awe of encountering something miraculous after having given up on it completely.
Like when he had secretly learned his first spell and cried tears of joy despite his abusive father.
Kite sighed softly.
‘Maybe I’m being too sensitive.’
Perhaps knowing Yeo-ul had suffered because of her debts made him overly emotional. It must have been tough for a child to handle debt alone.
‘Well, whatever her past, I just need to make her smile more. What should I show her next?’
Settling his thoughts, Kite suddenly had an idea and smiled.
“Miss Yeo-ul, would you like to see some magic?”
“Magic?”
“This is a secret, but magic is the most fun thing in the world. Why else would I have abandoned my family for it?”
Kite playfully laughed, checking to make sure no one was watching, then flicked his hand.
From his long fingers, a misty, smoky substance emerged, forming a small rainbow in the air.
Yeo-ul, not understanding at first, tilted her head, then her eyes widened in amazement.
“Wow, a rainbow!”
Realizing her voice was too loud, she covered her mouth, then whispered excitedly.
“There’s a rainbow!”
Kite chuckled at her adorable reaction.
“Miss Yeo-ul, you’ll be very popular in Wizardian. There, people don’t often show such pure delight.”
He looked at her warmly.
“When we return, ask the boss to show you real magic. This little trick is nothing compared to what he can do. He’s the Archmage, after all.”
“Archmage?”
Yeo-ul tilted her head at Kite’s words.
Archmage.
Like the wanderer, this was a concept not in her novel.
“What’s an Archmage?”
“An Archmage is the only person who can use every spell in existence.”
Yeo-ul was momentarily speechless.
Every spell in existence.
It sounded as vast as all the sand on a beach or all the stars in the sky.
“Is that even possible?”
“For one person’s power alone, no matter how great a genius, it’s impossible. But with inherited knowledge, it is.”
“Inherited knowledge?”
“Exactly.”
Kite nodded.
“Magic is an incredibly vast field. Even the greatest mage can’t keep up with all its changes.”
Yeo-ul nodded subconsciously.
Her brother had said something similar.
Medicine is ever-evolving; to avoid treating patients with outdated knowledge, constant study is essential.
“A long time ago, a great mage came up with a method. To pass down accumulated knowledge to the next generation.”
Kite’s hand drew a golden rectangle in the air, then began to fill it with light dots.
“They store their lifetime of knowledge in a special mental space governed by mind magic, and the next generation does the same.”
The light dots in the rectangle increased.
“Over generations, knowledge accumulates. It creates a kind of vast mental library. Even if you don’t learn all the spells yourself, accessing that space allows you to master them all.”
“So that’s why Lantus can use all the spells in existence….”
“Exactly. He is the current Archmage.”
Yeo-ul was overwhelmed by the concept of an Archmage, but then she had a question.
“But why can’t others enter? Wouldn’t it be better if many people could use the library?”
“As I said, the library holds immense knowledge. If it fell into the wrong hands, it could lead to destruction.”
“Oh.”
“That’s why only someone who can see through malice can become the Archmage. Such a person would resist evil to the very end.”
Yeo-ul’s heart pounded.
She didn’t know if it was because the concept surpassed her imagination or because Lantus was described as the one who would resist all evil.
Kite smiled warmly.
“You can ask the boss for more details. I’ve never been to the library, so his explanation would be more accurate… ouch.”
Kite winced and held his head. He stood still for a moment, then exhaled deeply and removed his hand.
“Hoo.”
“Kite, are you okay?”
“It happens sometimes. It’s nothing serious.”
Kite dismissed it, but Yeo-ul noticed his occasional grimace.
“Is it a headache?”
“Yes. I don’t know if it’s exactly a headache… it feels like a small lightning strike, ugh. It comes and goes quickly.”
He rubbed his head and smiled to reassure her.
“It’s not severe, just bothersome because it can happen anytime. The pain itself is bearable and ends quickly.”
“I see.”
Yeo-ul nodded, feeling downcast.
‘I don’t know anything about headaches. I never wrote about Kite’s headaches in the novel….’
Her brother had cured another headache patient.
He discovered and removed a brain tumor in a protector’s daughter.
That episode led to the protagonist gaining an ally.
‘But what can I do? I can’t perform surgery.’
Besides, there’s no evidence that Kite’s headache was due to a tumor.
‘Headaches can have many causes.’
If Yeo-ul had specialized knowledge, she could diagnose the headache’s cause with an interview, but she knew nothing.
‘How great would it be if there were a library of knowledge in Korea.’
A library like the one Lantus accessed, but in her world.
If she could bring her brother’s medical knowledge here, she could help people properly.
Although she enjoyed the outing, Yeo-ul couldn’t shake that peculiar thought.
