Chapter 27 - When a Rumor Becomes a Dagger (2)
I laughed while lying on the medical corps bed and wiping the blood flowing from my torn lips.
“Kuk kuk kuk! Ouch, it hurts.”
Even though I mitigated the impact as skillfully as possible, the hand of the guy who only swings a sword without studying was rough.
The 2nd Prince Yubaha was sent back to his residence by his attendant, who was good at persuasion, along with the escort knights.
Before leaving, the attendant earnestly asked Horazon to issue a gag order about what had just happened and followed.
For now, I went to the medical corps with the support of Precia and Horazon to receive treatment.
“Prince, you may have more talent than you think.”
When Horazon spoke as if it was unexpected, Precia excitedly nodded her head.
“It’s rare for Master to acknowledge something! How about learning the sword, after all? Unlike before, I’ll go easy on you.”
At that unconvincing remark, I subtly averted my gaze.
“I’ll refuse for now since just exercising is already overwhelming.”
Precia, who had expectations, couldn’t hide her disappointment at my refusal.
I turned my head while applying the ointment given by the medical officer to my wound.
After the medical officer finished the treatment, Horazon sent him out and asked me:
“But what does it mean that not issuing a gag order is His Majesty’s will?”
At his question, I searched for gauze and adhesive tape in the cabinet and answered:
“It means exactly that. It would be best for you to hear the details directly from His Majesty.”
“From His Majesty?”
I deliberately taped the gauze off-center on my cheek to make the wound more visible and affirmed.
“If I say it, the meaning could be distorted, so wouldn’t it be better for you to be certain?”
Someone of Horazon’s status could have an audience with the king at any time.
Of course, it was impossible to just barge in without notice.
“That’s true, but.”
Horazon looked at me with a worried expression, concerned that a commotion might occur due to not issuing a gag order.
Seeing him like that, I grinned.
“Ah, and also tell His Majesty to be cautious even with a glass of water from now on.”
The king will be in a state where he can neither live nor die, poisoned a few years later.
I don’t care about the king’s health, but the king needs to stay alive to keep the queen and my enemies hidden in the political world in check.
“What does that mean again?”
At my sudden words, Horazon’s expression turned grim.
He glared at me as if I would poison the king’s meal.
For someone loyal to the king, it could be a threatening remark that he had no choice but to react sensitively to.
I shrugged my shoulders.
“It means exactly that. His Majesty is more important than anyone, so wouldn’t it be a big deal if he even gets a cold?”
At my joke, he emitted something stinging and pressured me. Then Precia stepped in front of Horazon and brought her hand to her sword.
“Even if you’re Sir Horazon, I can’t tolerate showing such force towards the prince.”
“…Are you saying you want to try it?”
As their gazes collided, sparks flew in the air.
No, it wasn’t a metaphor. The surrounding air rippled, and actual sparks occurred.
Clap!
I clapped my hands loudly to dispel the tense atmosphere.
“Precia, stand down. Sir Horazon’s reaction is natural as a knight of this country. Rather, it would be a problem if he didn’t react like this.”
As I smiled, Horazon looked at me with a face that didn’t understand.
“You just need to tell him that I asked you to convey it like that. After delivering the message, His Majesty can decide how to deal with me. Isn’t that right?”
When I sought agreement, Horazon made a doubtful expression.
“You’re right. But it could be detrimental to you, Prince.”
At his warning, I answered seriously:
“Originally, loyal advice requires risking one’s neck. Of course, at most, it would just be like being exiled and driven out.”
“I understand. I apologize for reacting emotionally.”
At Horazon’s apology, I nodded.
“I understand. No, rather, it’s fortunate. Because you’ll be protecting His Majesty’s side.”
In the novel, when the king was on the verge of death, Horazon declared political neutrality and didn’t take any action.
His choice was a wise attitude as an individual, but it acted as a negative factor for the country.
When the kingdom’s strongest force was blocked in a situation where the enemy was unknown, it became favorable for the hidden enemies to run rampant.
Horazon looked at me with a puzzled expression, as if he couldn’t understand my words.
I deliberately showed signs of injury and returned to my residence, the detached palace, through the most crowded places from the training ground.
Everyone who saw my face was surprised, and occasionally, someone asked how I got hurt.
Each time, I made the most awkward expression possible and brushed it off.
Those who encountered me on the way would embellish the rumor about the 2nd Prince’s assault once it began to spread.
“From today, I’ll stop the palace tours for a while. I should also stop going to the training ground.”
At my words, Precia asked:
“Even the exercises?”
“Yeah. That way, the rumors will become even sharper.”
Think about it. A person who went around greeting people every day is assaulted by the 2nd Prince and lives in seclusion?
Anyone would think that the 2nd Prince or the Queen must have done something.
The rumor I had been sharpening since entering this body would become a sharp dagger and stab the Queen.
Originally, I planned to let it simmer for a few more days and create rumors, but thanks to the stupid 2nd Prince, it seemed I could move up the schedule.
“Of course, I can’t waste precious time, so I need to take care of outside appointments. Herion, make it look like I’m lying down in my room.”
“Like when you went out last time, right?”
I nodded at Herion’s confirmation.
“It would be good to spread a rumor that I’m suffering from a cold.”
Adding another line to the rumor attacking the Queen wasn’t bad either.
“Well then, let’s go out.”
“Yes!”
Precia answered in a lively voice and followed behind me.
Precia and I, who secretly left the palace, headed straight to Divet’s residence, which also served as his pharmacy.
“Are you here? I’ve come, old man.”
The pharmacy, still located in a shabby and remote place, had no one guarding it, just like when I first came.
“Old man! Are you not here?”
“Shut up, you brat! I’m not deaf!”
When I called out loudly, Divet answered irritably from inside.
As Precia and I went further in, Divet was reading an old book, and a cute little girl was lying on the sickbed.
“Hmph! I thought you ran away since you didn’t show your face for three days after coming last time, but you didn’t escape.”
“Ahaha, I still have many medicines to request from you, old man, so where would I go?”
At my joke, Divet snorted.
“Huh, someone who doesn’t even pay is talking about requests.”
“Didn’t I say I would provide something else instead? But it seems you’ve started accepting patients now.”
When I asked as if it was unexpected, Divet closed the book he was reading and answered:
“This child is Gil’s younger sister.”
“This little one?”
Gilbert’s sister is about five years younger than Gilbert.
But the little girl lying down looked even younger than that.
“She got sick at a young age and couldn’t grow well because she couldn’t eat properly. Fortunately, it’s not too late, so if we feed her well from now on, she’ll grow.”
At Divet’s words, I sat on the bed next to where the little girl was lying.
“How is the medicine? Is it working well?”
“Hmph! Of course! Who made the medicine? She’s noticeably improving.”
Having said that, Divet made a bitter expression and looked down at his trembling hands.
“…In the end, what you said was right. I’m a failure as a doctor.”
The old man who had lost his lifelong pride looked diminutive.
Rather than poorly comforting him, I decided to change the subject.
“Speaking of which, where is Gilbert?”
At my question, Divet answered while wiping the sweat on Gilbert’s sister’s forehead with a damp towel.
“He went to work.”
“Work? Even though he became my knight?”
When I expressed dissatisfaction, Divet burst out in anger.
“Then are you telling the kids to starve to death!”
“Ah, I see. I didn’t think of that.”
I had overlooked it because I had many things to consider in various ways.
I took out a gold bar and five silver bars from the ingredient storage.
“You should know some black market dealers, right? From now on, live with this. Use it for the child’s medicine too.”
With this much, they could live without worrying about money for about 10 years, even without being frugal.
When I casually took out the gold and silver bars, Divet was flustered.
“What the hell are you really?”
“A prince of this country.”
Of course, this wasn’t something I obtained because I was a prince, but embezzled military funds that were forgotten 120 years ago.
“Again, with that? Stop making strange jokes, and if you don’t want to say it, then don’t.”
Divet didn’t believe me at all, even when I told him the truth.
“Ugh…!”
Gilbert’s sister, who was sleeping while sweating, woke up with a groan.
“G-Grandpa… I’m thirsty.”
“The water is here.”
Divet supported the girl’s head with his hand and fed her water little by little.
“She looks much worse than I thought.”
When I asked worriedly, Divet let out a small sigh.
“It’s an immune response that occurs as her constitution changes due to the medicine’s effect. There were a few critical moments, but she got through them and is stabilizing, so you don’t have to worry.”
“Grandpa, that, that person…?”
When Gilbert’s sister asked about me, Divet answered while wiping her sweat.
“He’s the person who examined your illness and provided the medicine. You won’t be able to stay awake for long, so say hello now.”
‘Provided’ the medicine.
In fact, there was a flaw in saying he provided it. Gilbert’s life was practically mortgaged to me in exchange for handing over the medicine.
“Ah…! Big brother’s… lord?”
It seemed Gilbert had already told her about me.
“Yes, I’m the person who received your brother’s loyalty. My name is Yuan. And this is my knight, Precia.”
At my introduction, Precia smiled and greeted her.
“Hello. So you’re Gilbert’s sister.”
“Hello… Lord brother, pretty sister. Cough! Cough! Haa…!”
Gilbert’s sister coughed and inhaled roughly.
“Lo-Lord brother. Thank you. I wanted to say this when I met you.”
Suddenly receiving gratitude, I felt awkward.
“No, you should thank your brother rather than me for the medicine. Your brother…”
“No.”
Gilbert’s sister cut off my words and shook her head.
“Thank you for fulfilling my brother’s, my brother’s dream. Even though he may not be a real knight… Thank you for telling him you would make him a knight. He’s a fool who tried to give up everything because of me, but still…”
She rambled and spoke in a tearful voice, perhaps because she was sick or overcome with emotion, but her feelings were conveyed.
I stroked the diminutive girl’s head and took out an identification badge engraved with magic from my pocket.
“I should be the one saying thank you. And your brother really became a knight. This is your brother’s new identification.”
After seeing the identification, Gilbert’s sister mumbled something. Then her pupils lost focus, and she fell asleep as if fainting again.
Divet, who saw the identification, shouted in surprise.
“You! That’s real! It’s an identification badge that allows entry to the palace, so it should be impossible to forge. How did you obtain it?!”
Originally, a prince had the authority to freely appoint knights as personal soldiers if it was less than ten.
To appoint more knights, the king’s permission was required, but since Precia was the only knight of the 1st Prince until now, there was no need for a complicated procedure to appoint a knight.
Now it includes Abasael and Gilbert, so a total of three, I guess.
“I told you. I’m a prince.”
When I smiled playfully, Divet looked at me as if it was absurd.
Looking at Divet like that, I mentioned the original purpose of coming here, which I had forgotten.
“Ah, and old man, I found your granddaughter.”
