Chapter 4: 4
"I think your little friend got lost, Whitney," Frenchie said with a slight, ironic smile.
The group of friends was sitting around a campfire, roasting marshmallows. It had been two hours since Matt had left, and so far, he hadn't given any sign of life.
Whitney looked around, worried. She couldn't stop thinking about Matt, but she didn't want to express her concern. She didn't want to seem too worried about him, especially with her boyfriend by her side. However, Frenchie's words reignited her unease.
"We need to go look for him. There could be dangerous animals in this forest; he might be in danger," Whitney said, looking at her friends.
"No way I'm going into the forest to look for a guy I don't even know, Whitney," Frenchie replied, a bit irritated by the suggestion.
"Man, we need his equipment to move the weed," Wade, who was smoking, said, glancing at his friend.
"No, we don't need him. We'll figure out how to move the weed," Frenchie retorted. "And you, you'd better not be thinking about going after him. If you do, we're going to have problems." He pointed to Amanda, who was eating and simply observing the discussion.
"Me? It never even crossed my mind," Amanda said with a small smile.
She liked the way her boyfriend reacted whenever Matt was mentioned. The jealousy on his face was so amusing.
Seeing that no one would go with her, Whitney turned to her boyfriend.
"Mike, please, come with me."
"Whitney, it could be dangerous," Mike said, irritated, not at all liking his girlfriend's worry.
"He's probably just lost," Whitney said, looking at Mike with a pleading expression.
"Fine, fine, but let's not stray too far from the camp," Mike relented, annoyed.
"Tsk, tsk. And I thought you were the man in the relationship, Mike," Frenchie said, laughing.
Mike glared at him but said nothing. He just huffed and walked away with Whitney, entering the forest.
Matt, who was at a distance, spinning a coin between his fingers, watched the group. He was aware of the whole conversation that had just happened. He watched Whitney move away to search for him.
In reality, Matt had no intention of saving the group of friends; only Whitney needed saving. Not out of morality, but for convenience. She would be a crucial part of his plan.
But seeing her concern for him, something that surprised him a lot, he decided to increase her importance on his "list."
If it were his past life, he would probably do anything to save these people. However, after spending so much time in the literal void, his feelings had become numbed. And his apparent mission given by God did nothing to help.
Matt would fulfill the missions assigned to him, but he would do little or nothing to be the white knight of the multiverse. Being around that group irritated him deeply. They were all irritating caricatures of stereotypes. He wouldn't lift a finger to save them.
He had already seen his target sneaking through the trees, hiding. Jason was staring at Whitney intently as she walked away with her boyfriend.
This made Matt smile. His plan was working.
Jason, who was staring at the girl who resembled the picture of his mother, turned and looked at the group. He was analyzing them. He was a beast, and in front of him were his prey. He kept watching, waiting patiently. He wasn't in a hurry. After all, he literally had all the time in the world.
---
Wade, who was eating, listened, bored, to his friend complain about Matt.
"Alright, I guess I'll leave you with your girlfriend. She'll calm you down. I'll stay with my babies," Wade said as he walked away, ignoring his friend grumbling behind him.
---
Wade looked at the plantation around him. He still couldn't believe it. Thousands of dollars were in front of him. Laughing, he went over to a tree and pulled his pants down to relieve himself. Then he heard a sound around him.
Turning quickly, Wade looked in the direction the sound had come from.
"Who's there? Frenchie, this isn't funny, man. You'd better get out," Wade shouted, scared. But there was no response. Just as he was about to leave and return to the camp, he heard a sound behind him.
Turning around, he was shocked by the tall and strong silhouette of someone.
"Hey, who are you? I don't want trouble, man. Are you the owner of the weed? I haven't touched the plantation, I'm just camping with some friends," Wade said, stepping back slowly.
Seeing that the silhouette didn't answer, Wade was about to speak again. But before he could, the figure suddenly ran toward him.
Startled, Wade tripped over a log and fell. When he realized, Jason was already in front of him, holding a machete.
Wade raised his arm unconsciously to defend himself from the incoming blow. He went into shock when the machete sliced through his arm as if it were butter. With his adrenaline high, Wade only felt the pain a few seconds later and screamed in desperation. But Jason, relentless, swung a horizontal blow to his head, tearing off half of his skull. Only Wade's mouth remained, still open in an attempt to keep screaming.
