Chapter 39: Volume 1 Chapter 39: Night Talk
The first night in Redhorn Town passed without any surprises.
After Garde accidentally poked the water puppet and it exploded, Muelsyse didn't reappear.
After a day of exhaustion, the employees of Rhine Lab turned in for the night.
Garde leaned against the window, gazing at the stars in the sky, unable to help but think of Laurentina and Gavial.
I wonder how they're doing now.
But upon reflection, it had only been a day or two since they parted ways.
With a bitter smile, Garde lay down on the soft bed. It was a bit uncomfortable for him, as he was used to sleeping on hard beds, but now that the sleeping environment was better, he found himself adjusting.
His tail couldn't help but start swaying, occasionally tapping against the wall to his right.
After a while, he suddenly heard the same sound coming from the neighboring room.
Garde's heart skipped a beat.
Oh no, am I disturbing the person next door?
"Garde?"
Saria's voice came from the other side, and Garde realized that Saria was sleeping in the room next to his.
"Yeah, that's me, sorry if I disturbed you, Saria."
The soundproofing of the building was apparently not very good, as Garde's voice, though not loud, clearly reached the other side.
"Don't worry about it, I wasn't asleep either."
After that exchange, both Garde and Saria fell silent. After a while, they both suddenly spoke at the same time.
"Garde."
"Saria."
Both of them spoke simultaneously. Garde awkwardly touched his nose, while on the other side, he thought he heard Saria's laughter.
Although brief, did Saria just laugh?
Come to think of it, Garde had never seen Saria laugh. Even when she was in a good mood, her lips might curve slightly, but she was still far from a genuine smile.
What does Saria look like when she laughs?
Is it beautiful?
Garde pondered, listening to the sound from the other side of the wall.
"Garde, do you miss home?"
"Mm."
There was nothing embarrassing about admitting it. He hadn't left home more than twice in his life, and this time, he didn't even know when he would return.
Although the jungle environment wasn't great, just like Gavial didn't like the hot and humid climate of the rainforest, he didn't really like it either.
But no matter how bad it was, it was still his home, with his family, friends, and his little wife.
He planned to marry Gavial when he returned.
Although revealing Laurentina's matter would surely lead to a beating from Gavial, Garde didn't want to give up on either Gavial or Laurentina.
It might seem like Garde was fickle, but what could he do?
Both girls were important to him.
"Sorry."
Saria's voice came from the other side again, and Garde was puzzled.
"Why apologize?"
"If it weren't for my request, you wouldn't have had to leave your home."
"Oh, you mean that."
Garde rolled off the bed and propped himself up with his elbow, his arm supporting his head as he faced the wall.
"I didn't go there just because of your request. It's been a long time since I've been there, and I miss it. I have an old friend there, and I hope I can see it again this time."
"You have a friend there!?"
"Yeah, a close friend who helped me become as strong as I am now."
"If we make it through to the end, we'll definitely see it."
But by then, most of the Rhine Lab expedition members would most likely be killed, so it might be better not to see it.
Garde thought to himself.
"What about you? Do you have something on your mind?"
"..."
After a moment of silence, Saria's voice came from the other side.
"I'm just wondering if my decision was the right one."
"Why do you say that?"
"Because I should be in Columbia right now, with my friend, protecting her while dealing with the trouble from the underworld and government alike. Making sure she can calmly navigate through the crisis, instead of here, I always wondered whether this decision would make our Rhine Lab go down the wrong path, it's this kind of time that makes me wonder whether I made the right choice."
Even as she slept, Saria still wore a thick protective vest, which allowed her to put on her protective suit immediately in case of emergency.
Like Garde, she lay on her side, facing the wall.
"I should trust her."
Saria said this because she felt that she and Kristen are friends, or maybe it's just wishful one-sided thinking of her?
But lately, Kristen's actions had made her increasingly confused.
Even if some regulations could stimulate the enthusiasm of research personnel, some boundaries should not be crossed repeatedly.
So, when she heard that someone from a Salgan tribe had brought back a potent mithril disease suppressant from the Hotland, she disregarded the objections of those around her and embarked on this journey.
"My decision affects the lives of dozens of Rhine Lab employees, my colleagues."
"Sometimes I wonder."
"Is what I'm doing any different from those researchers and scholars who trample on the bottom line of science?"
"Is my stubbornness leading my subordinate down a path of no return?"
Having witnessed Garde's battles and knowing his strength, Saria felt this confusion.
Because she knew that strength was not influenced by emotions.
If even Garde couldn't guarantee his own survival in the Hotland,
what could she use to ensure the lives of those dozens of Rhine Lab employees?
The reason for her confusion was her lack of strength.
"My father once said, crying doesn't solve problems, venting emotions doesn't protect you from being bullied. If you're bullied, fight back. If the car breaks down, fix it."
"But he didn't tell me."
"What to do when you meet an enemy that can't be defeated with fists?"
"Run away? Hide?"
"Or face it head-on, and then pay the price?"
Saria didn't know why she was saying so much, some of it was even secrets buried in her heart, secrets she didn't even know herself.
They had only known each other for a short time.
"I think you don't need to agonize over so many things."
The voice of the crocodile man came from the other side of the wall.
"In my hometown, there's an old saying: when the sky falls, there's always someone tall to hold it up. I'm your guide, tied to you like a grasshopper on a string. If there really is an enemy, I won't just stand by!"
"Why would I do something I'm not sure about?"
"After this is all over, I still want to marry two wives and have a family."
What about the sky falling and the grasshopper on a string?
Saria frowned, suddenly not understanding what Garde was talking about.
But she understood the part about marrying two wives.
The first one should be Gavial right?
Then who would be the other one?
Was the tall man who would hold the falling sky a metaphor?
Combined with Garde's words, did he mean that he would help her if they really encountered danger?
Why?
She hadn't paid enough to deserve Garde's help.
Come to think of it, she didn't even know what Garde wanted.
Saria felt inexplicably irritated, always feeling like Garde's words had some hidden meaning, but subconsciously wanting to deny that answer.
Unable to bear it any longer, Saria couldn't help but call out.
"Garde?"
"Garde!"
There was no reply from the other side of the wall. Saria couldn't shout too loudly because it might disturb the rest of the people.
So she endured, tangled up, until she heard the faint sound of snoring.
Garde had fallen asleep.
