Chapter 28
Chapter 28
After Su Fei and the others finished their meal, they took a break because they were really full.
“Brother Ning’s cooking is delicious! It’s really delicious. Cooking is really great. Su Fei is really lucky.” Liang Hao patted her stomach and said with a smile. She wondered if she should find someone to marry too. Su Fei’s life seemed wonderful now, and she really liked the feeling of family.
“Ordinary home-cooked dishes, everyone can cook.” Ningning modestly said, then looked at Su Fei, and without caring, started revealing some old secrets.
“You don’t know, Su Fei thinks my cooking is just average. She especially craves the food made in the guesthouse and prefers eating at restaurants.” Ningning looked at Su Fei lying next to him, rubbing her stomach. He chuckled as she spoke to Liang Hao.
“I didn’t mean to offend you by saying your cooking isn’t good. Your cooking is really amazing!” Su Fei, not expecting the argument to turn towards her, quickly sat up and expressed her sincere thoughts.
Su Fei pulled Liang Hao up without hesitation, smiling at Ningning, “You’re the hero today. All the dishes were made by you. You don’t have to do anything else. Just sit there and rest. Liang Hao and I will clean up.”
Liang Hao quickly nodded in agreement and started cleaning up the tables, chairs, and utensils with Su Fei, struggling to wash them clean.
Ningning regretted not stopping these two from getting things done immediately. Now he wanted to take out the portable stove and boil water for tea.
Having some tea would help digest the greasy food in their stomachs and cleanse their intestines, preventing stomach upset.
“Su Fei, you’ve really changed a lot. Before, you wouldn’t even step into the kitchen, and after meals, you’d throw away the chopsticks and leave. Now, I never thought you’d become so diligent.” Liang Hao said as she cleaned up, curious about what caused Su Fei’s significant change.
While washing the dishes, Su Fei didn’t lift her head and said indifferently, “It might be because of that falling incident. Suddenly, I realized that there are a few people in this world who truly care about me. Ningning is very good to me…”
Liang Hao listened attentively to Su Fei’s recounting of Ningning’s actions and felt that Ningning had finally turned his luck around. There must be someone who could see all his strengths, and his efforts were finally paying off.
“Usually, it’s just the two of us, and I don’t need to do anything. Ningning can clean everything up in no time. Today, on New Year’s Day, I wanted her to relax.” Su Fei looked at the clean kitchen, gathered the trash together, but didn’t take it out. During the New Year, it wasn’t allowed to dispose of these things outside; they were considered valuable.
“If you ever meet someone who touches your heart, or someone who moves you with their actions, you must treat them well. It’s rare to meet someone you like and who likes you in return in this lifetime.” Su Fei said earnestly, and Liang Hao listened attentively.
After cleaning up, they closed the kitchen door and returned to the living room. They saw Ningning had already set up snacks and tea for them. Each of them was poured a cup of tea, and the three of them continued to sit around the small stove, chatting and warming themselves.
Before Liang Hao could return home, there was a knock on the door. Ningning stopped Su Fei, who wanted to open the door, and went to answer it herself.
“Su Fei, you stay inside. Let me go and see what’s going on. You don’t know many of the villagers outside. I’ll go by myself.” Ningning said as he quickly put on his coat and went to answer the door.
As Ningning opened the door and asked who it was and what was going on, he saw the village chief with some villagers and three people wearing police uniforms, whom he didn’t recognize.
Ningning was puzzled about why the police would come to their house. They had always been law-abiding and hadn’t done anything illegal or against the rules.
“What’s going on? Village Chief, do you know why they’re here?” Ningning asked the village chief, feeling confused about why so many people were mentioning their house.
“Are you Ningning? I want to ask, is Liang Hao having dinner at your house? If she’s having dinner there, then we’re not wrong in looking for her.” One of the police officers said loudly. As a police officer, she was usually respected, and ordinary people would feel a sense of fear when they saw her.
“…Yes, she’s having dinner at our house. But what’s the matter with you coming to find Liang Hao?” Ningning asked curiously.
“The police don’t need to explain when handling cases! Is Liang Hao inside? Then let’s go in.” Manager Wang pushed past Ningning without even looking at him and walked straight into the house.
Ningning was a little angry. He looked at the village chief behind him and asked angrily what was going on. Why did they rush into their house like this?
“I heard it’s about theft! If the authorities find out that there’s such a scandal in the village I manage, my title as village chief will be revoked.” The village chief said sadly.
Su Fei and Liang Hao heard movement outside but didn’t see Ningning come back. They couldn’t help but feel curious about what was happening. What could it be?
Just as Su Fei and Liang Hao got up, they were startled by the sound of the door opening. They saw a group of people coming in, including two police officers and a woman who looked like she was from the city.
One of the police officers spoke in a particularly harsh tone and said to Su Fei and Liang Hao, “Are you Su Fei and Liang Hao?”
Su Fei was annoyed by their tone. They were speaking so aggressively, as if they were criminals. Even if they were criminals, they shouldn’t speak like this without evidence.
“Yes, I’m Su Fei. What’s the matter? Why are you speaking so aggressively? Are you sick?” Su Fei was a person who stood up to bullies. If they had spoken nicely, she would have cooperated with them, but they didn’t even say anything before shouting at her. Were they sick?
“Hey, watch your language…” One of the police officers was a young girl who had just become a police officer. Basically, no one dared to speak to her with such an aggressive tone.
Another older police officer quickly intervened and said, “We’re just asking for your names. Maybe her tone was too heavy, but we have clear evidence that Liang Hao, this young woman, committed theft.”
“No, I didn’t steal anything.” Liang Hao said anxiously. She really didn’t know why the police would come to her and accuse her of theft. She could be sure she hadn’t stolen anything.
Manager Wang’s recent successes had clouded her judgment, and seeing Liang Hao so anxious made her think there was something wrong. But seeing Su Fei speak up so confidently, she thought
Su Fei might not be aware of or involved in the situation.
“Let’s go back inside and interrogate them. We’ll find out soon.” Manager Wang calmly said and tried to take Liang Hao away.
The two police officers didn’t hesitate and immediately grabbed Liang Hao’s arms and followed Manager Wang, wanting to leave.
Manager Wang didn’t leave immediately but turned back to Su Fei and said, “You should remember this saying: ‘One who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.’ In the future, don’t be friends with thieves like this. Otherwise, you might end up committing theft too.”
Manager Wang was particularly angry because she had caught so many thieves, and Su Fei was the only one who dared to confront her like this. Moreover, she dared to refute her arguments.
Ningning listened to Manager Wang’s last words and felt they were malicious. After the villagers gathered around, hearing those words, how could they continue to live in the village?
If anyone stole something in the village in the future, they would definitely blame his family because the police had defined the thief as coming from their house.
More and more villagers gathered around, pointing at Liang Hao and constantly uttering malicious words.
“I knew those educated youth were not good people. Look, my guess was right. Our village hasn’t had any thefts for hundreds of years. Now, the police have come to our village. It’s embarrassing!”
“That’s right…”
These villagers didn’t realize that words could kill a person, but they continued to express their views and stacked all their malicious thoughts on Liang Hao. People who had lost things even pointed their fingers at Liang Hao.
“Wait! What did you mean by that just now? Are you saying I’m a thief? Are you saying I’m about to commit a crime?” Su Fei also realized that if this rumor spread, she wouldn’t be able to live in the village.
“Ningning, close the door and don’t let them leave! We need to clarify. First, why are you arresting Liang Hao? What did she steal that makes you accuse her of theft?” Su Fei became angrier and calmer as she analyzed the situation. She felt Liang Hao couldn’t have stolen anything, and their arrest without evidence was incorrect.
More and more people directly blocked the doorway, while Ningning stood there holding the door to prevent Manager Wang and the others from leaving.
Liang Hao watched as everyone continued to speak up for her, and then couldn’t help but cry, shouting loudly, “I didn’t steal anything! I didn’t steal anything!”
The police officers looked at Su Fei’s calm instructions, and with Ningning also at the doorway, they couldn’t leave.
“You’re obstructing official business. We have the right to arrest you and take you back to the station. Step aside now, and we can pretend nothing happened.” Manager Wang scolded Su Fei harshly, and the police officers stared at Su Fei, causing the villagers to be frightened.
Su Fei didn’t bother to respond loudly, because reason doesn’t need to be shouted. She started asking her questions politely.
“First of all, you must tell me, why did you arrest Liang Hao? What did she steal? Your baseless arrest is a fault, and I have the right to sue you.” Su Fei calmly said to them.
Su Fei was explaining the law to them, as in small towns or counties, the police were usually related and didn’t have much knowledge of the law.
“But… What did they steal? Weren’t the informants already informed?” These two police officers also felt Su Fei was correct; they really didn’t know what Liang Hao had stolen.
Su Fei realized it was a manager, not police, who had brought them here to arrest someone. She immediately seized on this point and began to speak. “She’s a manager, not a police officer, so she has no right to come in and arrest people!”
As they tried to speak, Su Fei raised her hand, silencing the whole room. Everyone, including the villagers and the police officers, looked at her.
Su Fei looked at the villagers and said to them, “Don’t let them leave. I suspect these three are not real police officers but scammers. They’re brought here by a manager, not police or a chief!”
Village Chief Ning also heard this, quickly listened to Su Fei, and blocked the door with everyone. A group of villagers surrounded the three people, Manager Wang, and the two police officers, facing this unexpected situation. Moreover, several villagers arrived, grabbing Liang Hao from their hands.
The younger police officer couldn’t help but say loudly, “We’re the police, and if you continue like this, you’re obstructing official business. Don’t blame us for taking you to the police station. Show us your cooperation, or else!”
But the villagers, feeling embarrassed for siding with the fake police officers, now directly retorted. “Who knows where you stole your uniforms from, coming here to randomly arrest people in our village. You don’t even know what crime Liang Hao committed. You’re just here to arrest people. I think you’re fake police officers!”
“Yeah, I felt something was off just now. They came and started arresting people without even telling us what crime was committed.” These later villagers also didn’t know what was going on and just joined in.
“Didn’t they say she stole canned food?” Some of the educated youth who couldn’t stand seeing others succeed muttered behind them.
Manager Wang now began to sober up a bit, no longer so eager. She quickly adopted her usual friendly attitude.
“Well, I’m the manager of a department store. We came mainly to apprehend someone who often steals from our store. Based on the informant’s complaint, a person named Liang Hao has recently been stealing canned food, which is only available at our department store. So…” Manager Wang said subtly, and most people understood.
“So, you’re just relying on hearsay without any physical evidence or eyewitnesses to arrest someone, right? Are the police and managers nowadays so powerful that they can arbitrarily determine an innocent person guilty?” Su Fei didn’t let it go as easily as Manager Wang had hoped; instead, she continued to question her.
“All the villagers know about catching thieves, but you haven’t even confirmed who stole what, or if it was stolen from your place. Yet you’re here to arrest people.” Su Fei continued, with an expressionless face.
Didn’t they realize the mistake they were making? Perhaps they just wanted to let go after catching the wrong person, but they couldn’t imagine the impact it would have on someone’s life.
“No, we asked the educated youth in your village on the way here. Your educated youth have confirmed that Liang Hao did indeed eat the canned food and took several cans.” Manager Wang quickly started to explain, then looked at the several young female educated youth, urging them to testify.
“We didn’t lie. Liang Hao really did eat the canned food herself.” The educated youth quickly defended themselves, thinking they hadn’t lied; they had just concealed part of the truth.
“Oh, so you know that Liang Hao ate the canned food, but how do you know where her canned food came from? Did she tell you?” Su Fei asked them impolitely, no longer tolerating such nonsense. There was too little privacy now.
“…We don’t know…” The informants stuttered, making it clear they were scared.
Su Fei looked at everyone and said loudly, “Then let me tell you, I gave Liang Hao the canned food. How could I make a mistake in giving away canned food?”
“Since it’s a misunderstanding, let Liang Hao go.” Village Chief Ning quickly said to them, trying to smooth things over, avoiding the situation from escalating.
Liang Hao had now calmed down, and seeing the malicious intent in the eyes of those educated youth, she vowed to retaliate.
“Who knows where your canned food came from? Maybe you stole it.” The young police officer said disdainfully, feeling emboldened again now that Village Chief Ning was speaking up for them.
“Oh, let’s go and see then. But after we see, I will thoroughly investigate this matter. If you can’t give me an explanation, I’ll make sure your behavior is made public nationwide.” Su Fei turned and walked straight into the kitchen, bringing out a large box of canned food.
As Su Fei turned to leave, Manager Wang and the other police officer quickly spoke. They thought this young police officer was really lacking, making a mess out of nothing.
And clearly, they just wanted to know where Su Fei’s canned food came from. Then they saw Su Fei carrying a large box of canned food.
Su Fei threw the canned food on the ground and said to Manager Wang, “Look, are these canned foods from your department store? These canned foods are not for sale to the public. They belong to the employees of the state-owned enterprise.”
Manager Wang looked at the canned food on the ground, which was indeed much better than the canned food they had brought in. Not only was the packaging exquisite, but it also had a label saying it was not for sale.
“This is just a misunderstanding, we really misunderstood. We’re sorry, everyone.” Manager Wang and the other police officer quickly apologized, adopting a very low posture, and also apologized to Liang Hao, saying sorry to the surrounding villagers.
The villagers, seeing the police and the manager of the department store apologizing, quickly waved their hands and said it was okay.
But the young police officer, seeing that they were being closed off now, realized they had done wrong, but still wanted to save face and didn’t want to say anything conciliatory.
“Since it’s a misunderstanding, let’s just leave it at that. I’ve said before, all the children in our village are good children and wouldn’t do such things.” Village Chief Ning quickly expressed her opinion, wanting to downplay the matter and let it pass quickly. She didn’t want to dwell on this handle.
Manager Wang and the others, seeing the village chief saying this, quickly wanted to leave. However, Ningning was still holding onto the door, because Ningning hadn’t heard Su Fei say to let them go.
Su Fei directly stopped them, saying, “Hold on, we haven’t sorted out our matters yet. Is it all just okay with a simple sorry? And even the sorry wasn’t formal. Have you apologized for mistakenly arresting someone? Did you apologize to these villagers? What’s the point if they haven’t been treated unfairly?”
Liang Hao also felt very uncomfortable. They didn’t even say any apology to her, they just wanted to leave. Although she knew it was a style of doing things, it could be infinite to her. When she heard Su Fei speaking up for her.
Village Chief Ning, seeing Su Fei holding onto this matter, quickly persuaded her, “Su Fei, that’s enough. Liang Hao didn’t say anything. Don’t dwell on it here. Listen to my advice, let them go quickly.” He thought, let them go quickly, no other matters.
“No, this is not only about Liang Hao’s matter. Whether she forgives or not is up to her. The key is I still have my matter to deal with!” Su Fei looked at the three people who just wanted to leave! She thought today, no matter who advises, it’s useless. She must make it clear! “During the New Year, you come to arrest people, causing trouble for me. Do you think I’m easy to bully?”
All the people in the village are quiet now, watching Su Fei’s outburst, and then looking at Su Fei’s appearance, they all remembered a saying at the same time, “Having education is really scary!”
