Chapter 216 - 0204 The Problem with Hermes
Chapter 216: Chapter 0204 The Problem with Hermes
These days, there are several surgeries waiting at Li Quan Hospital and a consultation at the City People’s Hospital. It’s been really busy.
If Su Nanchen hadn’t reminded him on WeChat, Yang Ping would have almost forgotten about the consultation.
Ever since they did the quadruple reconstructive surgery at Li Quan Hospital, it’s like opening a floodgate. After that patient was discharged, he brought a whole bunch of people who wanted the same surgery.
Boss Cheng recounted how the security guards were initially frightened by the surge of people, thinking they were here to make a scene. They immediately rallied their forces to put a lid on it, only to find out they were all here for surgery.
The security guards quickly reported to Dean Cai, who then informed Boss Cheng. He almost dropped his jaw from the unimaginable news. It was the first time something like this happened since Li Quan Hospital opened. Boss Cheng greeted them personally to find out more.
It turns out, after the patient was discharged, he went around with his crutches in Shanghai to negotiate business. On a whim, he made an appointment with a veteran professor at Huashan Hospital.
It’s difficult to book a surgery at these hospitals, but getting an outpatient appointment was still possible. He was lucky and got one. After finishing his business in Shanghai, he brought along his preoperative and postoperative MRI scans, to meet with the professor as scheduled.
After the professor asked about his medical history and personally checked the stability of the patient’s knee joint, he was impressed by the results of the surgery. He could think of only a few who could pull off such a feat.
“Where did you have the surgery?” the professor asked.
Seeing the change in the professor’s expression, the patient felt a chill down his spine and nervously answered, “At a private hospital in G City.”
A private hospital in G City that could pull off this kind of surgery? Is that even possible? It must have been performed by a skilled surgeon from elsewhere.
“Who was the Chief Surgeon?” the professor continued.
The patient became even more frightened, “It was a young professor named Yang Ping. Did something go wrong with the surgery, Professor?”
The professor gave a slight smile and quickly explained, seeing how panicked the patient was, “The surgery was not messed up, it was very well done. Honestly, it’s rare to see a multiple ligament reconstruction of this quality in my forty years of practice. Do you know which hospital this Chief Surgeon is from?”
As the saying goes, ‘In Shanghai, anyone from the countryside is considered rural.’ Maybe living in the city for too long makes one narrow in view. The world outside is developing so fast.
“Sanbo!” The patient responded cautiously. Even though the professor had explained, he still felt uneasy, fearing that the professor was not telling the whole truth.
Sanbo, the professor had never heard of this hospital! Still not reassured, he examined the MRI scans and the knee joint again, nodding frequently, and told his graduate student, “Take pictures, take pictures.”
The student took pictures of the MRI scans and then a video of the professor examining the patient. The professor pointed at the MRI scans and said, “When you guys have time, study these scans carefully. Look at the origin and end points of these ligaments, the direction they take. It’s impeccable, textbook-level surgery!”
So, the surgery was indeed well done. The patient was relieved. He was so scared just now that his blood pressure almost shot up. Without a proper explanation, he might have fainted right in the examination room.
After all the fright, the patient felt elated by the time he finished his consultation. He immediately shared his brief medical journey on WeChat. He was part of a patient group, though he didn’t remember when he joined.
People in the group were from all over the place. They chatted about their conditions, shared medical experiences, rehabilitation progress, and recommended doctors and hospitals. Everyone was impressed by this doctor’s skills and asked the patient to organize a trip to G City.
Once they arrived in G City, some smart ones were well aware that this surgery is not easy. Not daring to rush into it, they felt the patient’s knee joint themselves and were satisfied. There was nothing more convincing than this. The medical travel group decided to visit the hospital then and there.
The sight of this large crowd in the lobby of Li Quan Hospital understandably made the security guards nervous. Once everything was explained, Boss Cheng was overjoyed. His jaw ached from all the laughing. He quickly asked someone to take charge of the medical travel group, called Yang Ping to schedule surgeries, only to find out that Yang Ping was too busy, and it would have to be a month later.
Boss Cheng explained to the patients that the surgeries could only be done a month later, but they had no complaints and decided to come back next month. They were unhurried and even made advanced bookings for their beds.
While the surgeries at Li Quan Hospital were being postponed, the consultation that Su Nanchen invited could not be delayed. After all, it’s for Su’s older brother. Yang Ping felt more troubled the more he thought about it. He had to talk to Director Han about it. He must make time for this consultation. He could not afford to slight his brother in any way.
The trauma emergency center training was going full steam ahead with no signs of slowing.
Not to mention the other emergency techniques, just take the gurney. They say the speed at which they push the gurney has improved several times. Pushing the gurney to a great height, every doctor and nurse was given training and tests, stricter than getting a driver’s license.
Where the doctor and nurse should stand while pushing the gurney, how those at the front should pull and those at the back should push, how to control the direction, where the hand should be placed, when and how much force to exert. How to cooperate when there’s one, two, three, or four people. They even developed an internal manual for pushing the gurney.
It’s said that a guy in the ER didn’t pass the single-person gurney-pushing test. He got it as night shift duty, pushing the gurney from the ER to the operating room then back to the ER, all drenched in sweat, with a patient even lying on it.
Xiong Sihai was commanding the ER training every day till his throat became hoarse. The Orthopedics team worked day and night for their training, the ER couldn’t lag behind.
In order to give nurses practice in drawing blood while in motion, the doctors in the department had their arms and legs pricked all over. They really put themselves on the line.
In the afternoon, after training a few rounds of people, Yang Ping finally found a chance to take a break. He went back to Integrated Orthopedics to talk to Director Han about the consultation in the City People’s Hospital. Just as he was about to take a sip of water in his office,
Hermes’ wife knocked on the doctor’s office door, “Doctor Yang, can you come to see my husband? He’d like to discuss his condition with you.”
This Hermes, he either wheels around in his wheelchair or limps with his crutches all over the place. He even ventured to the morgue in the hospital basement but was stopped by the old doorman.
The security guard came over to the department to greet the patient, asking him not to run around. It’s odd that Hermes even had his wife make a request as he inquires about his condition today.
Hermes’ surgery was very successful. The X-ray follow-up showed that his right tibia had been lengthened by 2 centimeters, and the bone callus growth was very good. Furthermore, there was no sign of infection, and the infection indicators in his blood tests, such as procalcitonin, had fallen within the normal range. This indicated that all the bacteria had been completely eradicated.
Yang Ping followed his wife to Hermes’ suite. Hermes was sitting on the sofa. As Yang Ping walked in, Hermes’ wife didn’t enter but merely closed the door behind them. An interesting couple, indeed.
Hermes immediately stood up, “Doctor Yang, please have a seat. I’d like to discuss my condition.”
Yang Ping sat down, and so did Hermes. He pulled out a card from his pocket, “It seems there’s an issue with my medical card. Can you help me understand what’s going on?”
Is this what he calls an understanding of the disease?
Yang Ping reached out his hand to take it, but wait! It was not a medical card, but a bank card. This guy was offering a bribe, and it might be a huge sum.
Yang Ping pulled his hand back with a smile, “I appreciate the gesture, but this isn’t necessary.”
Money is a good thing. Yang Ping didn’t think money was useless. But a gentleman knows the right way to love and acquire wealth.
Hermes insisted, “Doctor Yang, I don’t know what you like, so I thought I’d just use this. I apologize if it seems crude.”
Yang Ping had a polite gesture: Really, I appreciate the sentiment, but if there’s nothing else, I’m quite busy.
Looking at the firmness in Yang Ping’s eyes, Hermes, a businessman, is adept at reading people’s expressions. He could tell which was a coy reluctance and which was a genuine refusal.
He was a smart man too. He took back the card without insisting further.
“I didn’t mean anything by it. I just wanted to express my gratitude. I’m a straightforward man and can come off as blunt. I apologize if I have offended you, Doctor Yang.” Hermes was very embarrassed.
“It’s okay, don’t worry. Thank you, I appreciate your gesture.” Yang Ping stood up.
Hermes got anxious and said, “Doctor Yang, wait, I have another favor to ask.”
His face was red, and he stuttered and stumbled over his words, as if he had a hard time finding the right words.
“Don’t be shy, just say it. If it’s medically related, I’ll do my best.” Yang Ping sat back down.
“Medically related, medically related.” Hermes wiped the sweat off his forehead.
Finally, he plucked up the courage and asked, “Doctor Yang, you’re so skilled, you can even elongate bones. I was wondering, can those… other things… also be elongated?”
“What things?” Yang Ping was a bit confused at what he was referring to.
This was a really obscure question, Yang Ping didn’t immediately make the connection.
…
Ah, he was referring to that!
“Oh, yes, surgery can be performed to extend that!” Yang Ping confirmed.
“How much can it be altered? Can it be elongated by over 20 centimeters?” Hermes was thrilled.
Wow, this guy has big ambitions. Yang Ping almost spat out the lunch he’d had, shocked at Hermes’ audacity.
“Not 20 centimeters, but 3-5 centimeters. There’s a type of minimally invasive surgery that uses an endoscope. We only make a small two-centimeter cut above the pubic bone. It leaves no scar and looks aesthetically pleasing. The results are quite good.”
Hermes got a little excited. Earlier it was hard for him to speak up, but thinking about it now, he was talking to a doctor, there was no need to feel shy. He should speak his mind.
He rubbed his trouser legs with enthusiasm, “That’s enough, seeing as I have nothing to do while I’m in the hospital, I’d like to have this surgery too. Doctor Yang, could you arrange it for me? Let them start from the highest point and extend it to the longest it can.”
“This is a urological surgery. I’ll have Doctor Lu arrange a consultation with a urological surgeon. But, no matter how minor it is, surgery does come with risks. If what you currently have is sufficient, I’d recommend not going through with it.”
Yang Ping gave his medical advice. However, since this guy had money and wanted to enhance his quality of life, there was little more he could say to dissuade him.
He’d call for a consultation and let a urological surgeon discuss it with him.
