Chapter 121: Duet

Inside the bus, on the way to Taylor's hotel, a voice suddenly cut through the low hum of conversation.

"What about a song?"

The suggestion, seemingly logical yet completely unexpected, grabbed everyone's attention. The murmur of side conversations faded almost instantly, as if someone had pressed a universal pause button. Heads turned, eyes darted, and even the hum of the engine seemed quieter in the moment of stunned silence that followed.

Ethan, who had been deep in conversation with Taylor, turned his head toward the voice. They'd been discussing the media, the freedom that came with performing, and the highs and lows of fame. To Ethan, it felt refreshing—talking to someone who truly understood, someone who had lived through everything he was experiencing and so much more. Taylor had shared insights, stories that went beyond anything he could have imagined, ones that made him feel like he wasn't alone in the chaos of fame. It was the kind of conversation he didn't get to have often—one that actually meant something.

But now, all of that faded into the background. A song? With Taylor?

The idea echoed in his mind, relentless and intoxicating. His first major collaboration had been with Eminem—arguably the greatest rapper of all time. That alone had been a dream come true, a moment that had cemented his place in the industry. And now, a duet with Taylor Swift? The Taylor Swift? Last year, Time magazine had named her one of the 100 most influential people. She was the pinnacle of the music industry, the ultimate endgame. Just sitting next to her, exchanging thoughts, had been enough to leave him grateful. But a song? That was an opportunity he couldn't afford to let slip through his fingers. That was history in the making.

He was just about to speak when Rebecca beat him to it.

"A song? Are you serious?" she scoffed, her voice laced with skepticism. "What exactly are they going to sing about? How they got into a car accident and caused a scene at the hospital? Get real. We're better off just issuing the apology and moving on."

Bella, who had been the one to suggest it, sat forward, her eyes alight with determination. Normally, she would have been frozen with excitement, barely able to function this close to not just her former favorite celebrity—now demoted to number two—but her new number one. But right now, she was on a mission, and she was determined to see it through.

"They don't need to sing about anything controversial," she argued, her voice steady despite the adrenaline rushing through her veins. "Honestly, their fan bases are pretty similar. The only reason they're fighting right now is because they need someone to blame. They're pointing fingers at each other because no one wants to admit their favorite star could be at fault. But if Ethan and Taylor did a song together? Something good and catchy? The fans would eat it up, and just like that, we'd all be living in harmony again."

Tree frowned. "First of all, aren't you one of those fans? Because from what I saw on the way here, you were very active in all the fights online." She crossed her arms, unimpressed. "And second, a song? Seriously? Taylor has to be out of here in two days. We have obligations. There's no time for this."

Rebecca chimed in, shaking her head. "Yeah, and Ethan's concert is tomorrow. We need to be at the venue, setting up, rehearsing. We don't have time to play around with a new song."

Ethan's heart sank. He had been just about to jump in and push for the idea, but before he could, Bella cut in again.

"First of all, I apologize for what I said online. I got caught up in the heat of battle." She waved a hand dismissively before continuing, her words tumbling out faster now. "And second, they don't need that much time. It's Taylor Swift and Ethan Jones. Taylor, who wrote All Too Well in ten minutes. And Ethan—have you seen the lyrics to his songs? They're amazing! I'm sure they could pull something together quickly. They don't need a long recording session or anything fancy. I mean, it's them!"

She glanced between Tree and Rebecca, exasperation flashing across her face. "Aren't you guys supposed to be the PR managers? Shouldn't you know all this?"

That earned her a sharp look from both of them.

Her voice had taken on a frantic edge, as if sheer enthusiasm alone could will this into existence. She was practically leaning forward now, her hands gripping the armrests of her seat, her entire body tense with anticipation.

Tree and Rebecca were on the verge of another argument when Ethan's voice finally cut through.

"I think it's a great idea," he said, making all heads turn toward him. Seeing both Tree and Rebecca staring at him, he continued, "I mean, it's true—a duet with me and Taylor would show that we're cool and all."

Then, turning to Taylor, who had been quiet the entire time, he added, "That is… if you'd want to."

Taylor smiled, a slow, knowing smile. "Yeah, let's do it."

Bella sat on the couch in the middle of the bus, watching the exchange unfold before her. The way Ethan and Taylor smiled at each other sent her mind into overdrive. They're really going to sing together. I did it. It worked.

Her heart pounded in her chest, adrenaline rushing through her veins like a current too strong to contain. She had made it happen. Her idea, her push—it was actually happening. It felt surreal, like something out of a dream. She barely had time to process the moment, barely had time to fully grasp what this meant before her vision blurred, and the edges of her world darkened. Her breathing hitched, her body swaying slightly.

The last thing she heard before everything went black were panicked voices:

"Wait, hold on—" "Dear God, not again." "I thought she was already calm!"
