Chapter 116: Hospital
Tree Paine wasn't used to being surprised. As Taylor Swift's head of public relations, she had seen it all—every drama, every unexpected twist, every fan backlash. She was used to keeping things under control. But right now, sitting in the plush hotel suite in Texas, surrounded by the stillness of a quiet evening, she could do nothing but watch as the storm gathered.
The day had started simple enough. Taylor had insisted they attend the football game between the Kansas City Chiefs and a Texas team Dallas cowboy. though she couldn't care less about the difference between a touchdown and a tax audit. Taylor had dragged her insisting it was "important," though she'd refused to say why. Tree didn't ask. With Taylor, some mysteries weren't worth unraveling.
Her phone rang, the unexpected buzz breaking her silence. Tree glanced at the screen, groaning as she saw the unknown number. The private line was a line only people close to her has, so who could be calling her that she didn't already have said persons number?
Reluctantly, she answered, a sense of foreboding creeping in as she lifted the phone to her ear.
"Hello?" Tree greeted, her voice steady but curious.
"Tree, it's Jessica Ethan jones Label team head," came the tense reply. "I've got bad news."
"Tree was initially confused. Why was the head of Ethan Jones' team calling her? She had been hearing his name a lot lately, but she would have thought maybe he wanted to feature Taylor. But why would they need to call her for that? And besides, she had mentioned bad news—why would a feature be considered bad news?"
Tree immediately straightened, her body tense. The voice on the other end was clearly anxious, rattled even. Jessica, Ethan's label representative, sounded almost frantic. "What's going on?" Tree asked, her heartbeat quickening as she sat up straighter in her chair.
There was a brief silence before Jessica spilled the details. "There's been an accident. Ethan and Taylor—well, they collided. I don't know how, but it's serious. The fans are already tearing each other apart online. The Swifties are furious. You know how they can be." The words hit Tree like a punch to the gut. She knew exactly what Jessica was talking about—the whirlwind of social media, the fanatic loyalty of Taylor's followers, and the damage they could do when riled up, She was glad they were tailor's fans honestly because she wouldn't know how to manage them.
"We need to handle PR immediately," Jessica continued. "I'm on a flight there where i would be heading to the hospital when I land, but I'm hoping you can jump in and help smooth things over. There's no telling how this is going to explode."
"Tree's mind was racing. An accident? Taylor and Ethan—together? A crash? The two of them, one being the biggest name in pop and the other a rapidly rising star—though calling Ethan 'rising' felt like an insult, considering the numbers he was pulling in, some even rivaling Taylor's. Their fanbases, armies of loyal followers, were colliding. Even though Ethan was still relatively new, this was more than a crisis; it was a potential disaster."
'I'll meet you at the hospital,' Tree said, her voice now urgent, despite her attempts to keep it steady. 'Where are they?'"
"Arlington General Hospital. The hospital's a few miles away from the crash site. I'll send you the location."
Tree ended the call and rushed to grab her things. She had to go. The storm was already brewing, and she needed to be ahead of it.
Tree arrived at the hospital, her heart pounding in her chest. As she hurried through the hallways, she couldn't shake the anxiety gnawing at her. Where was Taylor? What had happened to her? She didn't know, but she had to find out.
Finally, she found a doctor in the corridor. "Excuse me," Tree called out, trying to maintain composure. "I'm looking for a Taylor patient."
The doctor glanced at her, then nodded, directing her toward a room further down the hall. Tree's pulse quickened. She entered the room, her eyes scanning the group gathered around.
"She first saw Ethan, who was wrapped in bandages, laughing heavily. Four other people were there—everyone seemed to be present, though she didn't recognize any of them. And then, her eyes locked on Taylor."
Taylor was sitting up, looking remarkably calm despite the bandages wrapped around her head. Everyone was laughing, their voices light, as if nothing had happened. Even Rebecca was there, her own head bandaged, but her usual fierce demeanor subdued for once.
Tree's gaze swept over them all. How could they be so carefree in the middle of this mess? She couldn't understand it she had viewed some online and knew. The fans—both Taylor's and Ethan's—were at war on social media, attacking each other and blaming their idols for the collision. Tree knew the fallout was going to be huge, and yet, here they were, laughing like it was just another day.
"Why are you laughing?" Tree's voice cracked. The room fell silent. "Do you have any idea what's happening online? Your fans are lynching each other. There's a TikTok with 2 million views claiming Ethan's a drunk, and some subreddit dug up Taylor's 2014 'I hate stop signs' tweet. TMZ's camped outside. This isn't a joke!"
Taylor and Ethan exchanged glances before they both broke into a surprised scream both shouting together "What"
