Chapter 7: Playdate 2
I found them all within 3 minutes.
The thing was, we were at a playground. There really aren't that many places to hide at a playground, and these dumb kinds didn't even know how to hide properly. One of them was even hiding behind the pole of a monkey bar with her eyes closed, as though thinking that if she couldn't see me then I couldn't see her either.
[Detection] LVL1:
You will have an easier time perceiving your surroundings
It was a passive skill that didn't seem very useful for now.
We played hide and seek again, this time I was one of the hiders.
Quest Alert!
[You Can't See Me]
Do not be found by the seeker
Rewards:
+10 DEX
+300 EXP
New Skill: Concealment
While the seeker closed his eyes and started counting down from 10, I grinned and climbed up the monkey bar. Thankfully none of the parents around us were really paying attention and I managed to manoeuvre up the roof of the slide that had a castle-like motif.
Laying down on the roof and enjoying the warm embrace of the Morning sun, I closed my eyes and waited for the kids to give up on finding me.
It took them approximately 20 minutes before the six children gave up and admitted defeat.
With a 'Ding!' notification sound, I received the rewards for a successful completion of the quest.
[Concealment] LVL: 1
Your presence is harder to detect.
Awesome, with this skill the advantage of my anonymity will grow even stronger.
I no longer thought of these play dates as a waste of time. Instead, I saw them as opportunities to grind my skills. After all, who else would I ask to repeatedly hide from me or try to find me while I hid so that I could grind my [Detection] and [concealment] skill levels?
My days as a 3 year old child continued in this lacklustre but rewarding manner. I grinded the levels of my [Accelerate] and [Evasion] skills while playing tag with the training partners as I had come to see my playmates as.
I had to make sure to hold back while playing with these children, because unlike them, my stats grew unceasingly. My DEX, even with the penalty from [Toddler], never stopped rising. The progress was painfully slow, only rising in increments of 0.1, but slow and steady wins the race and all that.
I had to keep my training partners engaged, after all. Cause no one would want to play with someone who they never won against.
Since there were no longer quests being generated from simply playing these games, I sometimes lost on purpose just to keep them playing.
[Detection] and [Concealment] was also similarly trained during games of Hide and Seek, but these particular skills could also be grinded on my own time.
Hiding from my parents became a hobby, and my [Concealment] was the skill that levelled up the most rapidly. It was also the most mystical of my skills, I observed.
You see, nearly all of my skills were abilities that altered the fundamental rules of the universe, bending and molding reality like clay.
[Evasion] increased the probability that I could evade attacks through no real effort of my own. Even if a kid tried to stealthily approach from behind and sneak attack me to tag me, I had a certain chance of evading this tackle no matter what. My body would either automatically move out of the way, as though guided by an invisible hand, or the kid would somehow miss me completely.
The skill not only affected me, but it influenced those who wished me harm as well. I could imagine if I was being shot at by a rifle, max level [Evasion] would result in bullets landing everywhere else except on me like I was being shot at by a storm trooper.
[Accelerate] at level 3 gave me a 60% boost in my movement speed for 30 seconds. With this ability, I could move faster than was physically possible for my childlike body. I could push past the limit of my stats and go beyond what a child of my age should be physically capable of. And unlike the Chakra Gates from a certain show, there was no physical drawback from pushing my body past its limits.
[Detection] gave me a supernatural sense of my surroundings. When I consciously tried to sense the area around me, I was able to extend my senses in a spherical zone. I could perceive people standing behind walls, rats in the sewers underneath me, and ants crawling between the cracks of the pavement. When the skill levelled up, the area which I could extend my senses would expand, and my senses would also sharpen.
If the other skills flirted with bending reality, [Concealment] outright tore down the prison called logic and rationality which humanity built up around ourselves in an effort to make sense of the world around us.
When I activated [Concealment] it was almost as if I slipped between the seams of reality. Even if I was standing out in the open, not consciously hiding, my parents who were looking for me would not be able to perceive my presence. At [Concealment] level 5, unless I shouted at them while standing under bright light, they would not have been able to find me no matter how long it took them.
The broken nature of [Concealment] gave me an idea. However, to be truly confident in this plan, I had to max out the skill first. There would not be a second chance.
These weren't the only skills I received while playing with the other children.
Playing catch with them generated the [Throwing] skill.
A mock battle using plastic swords somehow even generated the [Swordsmanship] skill.
Playing with a plastic bow and toy arrows gave me the [Archery] skill and mock-wrestling with the other boys generated the [Grappling] skill.
