Chapter 6: Playdate 1
While my progress in the [Precocious Bookworm] quest was going smoothly, it wasn't possible for my mother to bring me to the library everyday. My parents owned the little convenience store but they didn't have any other employees. My father might have talked big about being capable of running the store by himself, but there were limits to what one man could do.
Thus, there were many days my parents were simply too busy to bring me to the library. Honestly, I was perfectly capable of travelling there alone, but my parents would never allow their 3 year old to roam New York City unsupervised.
Thankfully, a solution had been found.
My mother was a social butterfly, though her extroversion had been greatly suppressed since moving to a foreign country. Fortunately for her, she was able to meet a group of Asian mothers who had similarly brought their children to the library. With them, her socially oriented, outgoing personality unfolded like the wings of a butterfly.
She made fast friends with these women, and even arranged several play dates with their children.
One of them, a housewife who had plenty of time on her hands, offered to bring me to the library in my mother's stead since her own daughter also loved going to the library. My mother accepted the offer happily.
I was introduced to the little Korean-American community living in Brooklyn through these library dates and play dates.
What a waste of my time, was my first thought. I had so many better things to do, why waste the precious and limited time I had playing with children of all things. But to maintain my guise of being an actual child and not some eldritch abomination that had somehow taken over Lee Jae Sung's body, I had no choice but to go along with the façade.
Surprisingly, these play dates wasn't a complete waste of my time. Because who knew participating in childish games could generate so many quests?
Quest Alert!
[Tag, You're It]
Catch all players (0/6)
(Bonus 1) Catch all players within 10 minutes
(Bonus 2) Catch all players within 3 minutes
Reward:
+10 Dex
+300 EXP
(Bonus 1) New Skill: Accelerate
(Bonus 2) New Perk: Predator's Pursuit
This quest was generated after the kids agreed to play tag around the playground when they all pointed their fingers at me and said I was the tagger.
It wasn't a daily quest, but the rewards were still rich. But ayo why did the bonus reward sound so sus, the fuck? I wondered if it was a good idea to even try and earn it.
Incredulous reward aside, I laughed internally. Do you know who am I? I'm the gamer. Catching little brats would be a piece of cake!
…I was wrong.
Little kids are fast! Who knew? They ran and screamed and why were they all sticky!? Gross!
I still only had a single digit DEX but I was still a little faster than the other kids, some of whom were a year or two older than me. Mainly because they didn't really know how to run properly.
I managed to complete the quest in the end, but only received the first Bonus reward after catching all the players in around 8 minutes. I also managed to level up, though the 10 DEX reward was reduced to only 1 due to the [Toddler] trait.
[Accelerate] LVL: 1
Increase movement speed by 20% for 10 seconds.
Cost: 10 MP
I finally had a use for the MP that I had been accumulating from my growing INT stat. Before today, I never found a way to make use of my MP. I tried to see if I could feel the energy inside me like it was chakra or something, but nothing worked. It seemed that I had to unlock skills that cost MP in order to use it.
It was kind of a basic skill but I could foresee it getting OP once I levelled it up.
After I managed to tag all the children, it was time for one of them to become the tagger this time. Lo and behold, another quest generated.
Quest Alert!
[Can't touch this]
Don't get tagged
Rewards:
+10 VIT
+300 EXP
New Skill: Evasion
Before I received the +1 DEX reward and the new skill, I was already a little faster than the other children. After? I was like a goddamn ninja compared to these brats.
Activating [Accelerate] saw my speed shoot up insanely. And the broken thing about [Accelerate] was that it didn't have a cool-down. Meaning that as long as I had enough MP, I could indefinitely increase my movement speed by 20%. It was comparable to indefinitely opening the first gate.
Needless to say, 'Can't Touch This' was an accurate quest title.
The quest was considered complete when the game ended after the other players just gave up on tagging me since I was too fast for any of them to catch up to. They simply just tagged each other while ignoring me.
I managed to earn the [Evasion] skill, as well as 10 VIT that was again reduced to 1 after the [Toddler] debuff.
[Evasion] LVL: 1
You have a small chance of evading attacks.
"Not fair, Jae Sung is too fast!"
"Yeah yeah! Too fast!"
The other kids began complaining like so. Well, fair enough. It was about time to change games anyway, and I wondered what other quests and reward might be generated from other games.
With a sly glint in my eyes I leaned forward and suggested, "Do you want to play… Hide and Seek?"
