Chapter 6: Chapter Six: On Thin Ice

"Hey Jason… what's up? You weren't in school today. A lot happened! You should've been here, bro!" Miles said, his excitement bubbling.

Jason's voice came through the phone, low and faint. "Hey, man. I'm down with a fever. I think I'll be fine, though."

"Oh my God, I'm sorry to hear that! Have you taken any medication yet?" Miles asked, concern creeping into his voice.

"Yeah, I've had some. I'll be okay, don't worry about me. But seriously, tell me what happened today!" Jason urged, sounding a little more energized.

Miles grinned, his heart racing as he thought about sharing his big moment. "You won't believe it! I was thinking about joining the basketball team, and I actually got to play! It was insane! I need to tell you everything. Send me your address, and I'll head over to your place."

"That sounds awesome! I'd love to hear all about it," Jason replied. "I'll send you my addy right away."

"Great! I'll be there soon," Miles said, feeling a surge of anticipation. As he hung up the phone.

He was about taking a cab. When a car stopped in front of him. It was Gwen, "where are you heading to new kid?" She said.

Miles heart raced, oh Hi Gwen. He said trying to act normal

"So, where are you headed?" Gwen asked, glancing at him with a friendly smile.

"I'm going to see my friend Jason. He's sick and couldn't make it to school today," Miles replied, sounding casual. He described his destination to her.

"Ah, I think I'll be going that way too. Hop in, I'll drop you off and head on," she said, her smile brightening the moment.

Miles was taken aback but quickly shook off his nerves. "What are you waiting for? Hop in!" she urged again, and he jumped into the passenger seat, feeling both excited and a bit anxious.

"Thanks for this," he said, trying to sound relaxed.

"Don't mention it," she replied, focusing on the road.

"How are you fitting in?" Gwen asked, glancing over with genuine curiosity. "I heard you got onto the basketball team. Congratulations!"

Miles felt his cheeks heat up. "Um, I'm fitting in perfectly, I guess," he said, trying to sound confident. "It's been a little overwhelming, but I think I'm getting the hang of it."

Gwen nodded, her eyes sparkling. "That's great! The basketball team is really fun. I love watching the games. You'll have to let me know when your next one is."

"Definitely!" Miles replied, a smile creeping onto his face. "I didn't expect to play so well at first. I was nervous, but once I got into it, it felt amazing."

"See? You just needed the chance," she said encouragingly. "So, what do you think about our school? Any favorites yet?"

"Honestly? The gym. And the cafeteria isn't bad either," he joked, and she laughed. "But really, everyone seems pretty cool. It's nice to finally feel like I belong somewhere."

Gwen smiled softly. "I get that. It can be tough starting over, but I think you'll do great here ."

As they continued chatting, Miles felt the nerves dissipate. They talked about their favorite classes, teachers, and even shared a few embarrassing moments from their first weeks at school. The conversation flowed easily, and before he knew it, he was laughing and genuinely enjoying their time together.

As they approached Jason's house, Miles realized he didn't want this drive to end. "Hey, am i risking my life talking to you right now? i was told it could be dangerous getting close to you. Miles said to Gwen jokingly… Gwen Laughed what do you mean by that.? Who told you that ? she said smiling…

"Jason, of course. He said Harry has a pretty intense vibe," Miles replied, trying to keep a straight face.

"Intense? That's one way to put it," she said, a hint of amusement in her voice. "But don't worry, he's not as scary as people think. Just… protective."

"Protective or possessive?" Miles joked, his heart racing a little at the thought.

"Probably a bit of both," Gwen admitted, her expression turning more serious. "But I promise you, as long as you don't give him a reason to be mad, you'll be fine."

Miles nodded, feeling both relieved and intrigued. "Good to know. Just trying to avoid any unnecessary drama."

Gwen smiled, her eyes twinkling. "Trust me, drama is not my style. But if you ever need backup, I've got your back."

"Thanks, I appreciate that," he said, feeling a rush of warmth

As they pulled up to Jason's house, Miles felt a mixture of excitement and disappointment that their conversation was coming to an end. "Well, this is my stop," he said reluctantly.

See you some other time and thanks for the ride, he was no longer feeling nervous talking to Gwen as he closed the door, he couldn't help but marvel at how nice, friendly and open she was. Given how pretty she looked, he had half-expected her to be distant or hard to approach. But here they were, chatting like old friends and sharing laughs. It amazed him how quickly they had connected.

Miles snapped out of the thought and remember why he was here. He quickly rushed to Jason's house rang the doorbell and waited, tapping his foot impatiently. When there was no response, he was about to press the doorbell again when the door swung open, revealing Jason's mom.

"Hi there! You must be Mrs. Connor, Jason's mom," Miles said, trying to sound confident.

"Yes, that's right! And you must be???," she asked warmly, a smile spreading across her face.

"I'm Miles Jason's friend,"

"Oh really ? Come in then! Don't just stand there!" she said moving away so he could get in

Miles stepped inside, his eyes widening as he took in the beauty of the house. The living room was stunning, filled with elegant furniture and tasteful decor. Everything looked pristine, from the plush sofas to the delicate artwork hanging on the walls. He recalled Jason mentioning his dad's job and couldn't help but think that it must come with quite a generous paycheck.

"Miles, right?" she asked, her eyes sparkling with friendliness.

"Yes, ma'am," he replied, feeling a bit shy under her gaze.

"Great! Have a seat. I'll go get Jason," she said, gesturing to the inviting sofa.

As Miles settled into the soft cushions, he felt a mixture of awe and comfort. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and he could hear the faint sounds of laughter and music from the other rooms.

"Jason!" Mrs. Connor called out, her voice echoing through the hallway. "Miles is here!"

Miles shifted nervously as he took a seat on the plush sofa, still taking in the elegant decor around him. He couldn't help but admire the framed photos on the walls, each one showcasing happy moments of Jason's family.

A moment later, Jason appeared, his face lighting up with a grin when he saw Miles. "Hey! You made it!"

"Yeah, I just got here," Miles replied, feeling a bit more relaxed.

"Sorry about the wait," Jason said, his mom returning with a plate of cookies. "Want some?"

Miles nodded, grabbing a cookie as they settled into conversation.

As she walked out "how are you feeling now" Miles asked.

"I feel a lot better now.. don't worry about me. you made it to the basketball team that's awesome. How did it happen so fast".

"Let's say I got lucky.. Miles said with a wide grin, the coach was impressed, but I don't think I got on the right side of Harry Osborn.."

"I told you to stay away from his girl come on bro you're new here and you don't want to be getting in trouble with Harry. He'll definitely do all he can to ruin your li…."

"It's not about his girl," miles said cutting Jason short .. "it was about the game, I think he was trying to hurt me while the game was on, and I did a dribble that made him lost his balance which I think might humiliate him…" miles said with a scare face

You didn't do that… you didn't, Oh My God! Jason exclaimed this is bad man you're definitely on his radar now Jason said feeling really concerned

"I think it's nothing, he'll get over it… and I might also have had a conversation with Gwen. She actually brought me here in her car."

Are you ready to die? Jason yelled

I didn't know how it happened bro, she was super nice to me, there is no way I could ignore her. It just happened and we only chatted, I mean I don't think we are friends, she might not talk to me tomorrow. Take a chill pill man.

"Just be careful man that's all I have to say, I wouldn't want you to get hurt being on Harry Radar, but don't worry, I'll be here for you if he tries to do shit. Up for some video games?" Jason asked standing up..

"Yeah sure," replied Miles following Jason to his room.
