Chapter 705: Chapter 684 ( War - VI )

"Ugh... Where am I?" - Daimon muttered as he slowly opened his eyes, only to notice how he seemed to be in a dark room - "!"

The demonic general quickly tried to move, though his expression changed as he noticed how his body was bound with strange chains that he immediately recognized - "Why am I wearing soul chains!"

"Because that's our deal for traitors" - replied a voice he immediately recognized.

"Cattleya!" - Daimon exclaimed angrily as he watched the beautiful demonic woman smile slightly - "You!"

"Me?" - Cattleya repeated as she cocked her head to one side.

"You traitor!" - Daimon roared as he tried to let go, though with no favorable results.

"Me, a traitor?" - Cattleya repeated with a frown as she shook her head - "How could I possibly be a traitor when I was the only one who accomplished the mission?"

"You chose to take control of the vanguard because you knew our ambush would fail!" - Daimon roared with eyes red with fury.

"How dare you call Miss Cattleya a traitor!" - exclaimed a soldier in fury - "She went out of her way to try to keep our deaths to a minimum, only for you to come back completely wounded by your own incompetence!"

Daimon was about to explode, when he heard the shout of the other soldiers, condemning him for his actions. A horrible expression appeared on his face as he saw how the soldiers who once looked at him with emotion, now looked at him with hatred, fury and disdain.

"Ok, enough" - Cattleya said with a frown as she looked around - "First, I want to know what his excellency said with our current situation."

"He said it's time for us to return, our operation ended up being a failure and our army has been reduced by 90%" - replied the messenger while biting the inside of his mouth to keep from cursing.

Cattleya let out a sigh when she heard this before shaking her head - "I'm sorry for failing you."

"No, you didn't fail us, Miss Cattleya, it was us who failed you, it was the other generals who didn't do their job, it was this bastard who betrayed us" - the messenger said as he glared hatefully at Daimon.

"I'm not the traitor, she is!" - Daimon roared as he glared hostilely at Cattleya.

"We went to retrieve the bodies of the other generals!" - exclaimed one of the few surviving soldiers not originally under Cattleya's command - "They weren't killed by humans! All their bodies were destroyed by demonic magic!"

"They tried to kill me, every one of them was a traitor!" - Daimon roared in fury - "They tried to sell our race to the humans!"

"How stupid do you think we are!" - exclaimed another soldier as he glared hatefully at Daimon - "How is it possible that all the generals but you were traitors!"

"And what do I know, all my actions were for the good of our race!" - Daimon exclaimed as he looked around, only to notice how the hostility in the soldiers' gazes was growing - "I see, you were all corrupted by this bitch.... You are all traitors of our race!"

"I've heard enough!" - A tired voice exclaimed.

The soldiers made way, revealing the high priest, who was walking next to a familiar person.

"Lord Freid?" - Said the soldiers as they looked at the familiar looking man, only this time, he had pale skin.

"Your Excellency, you have to punish all these bastards!" - Daimon exclaimed in fury - "All of them, and every one of them, are traitors to our glorious race!"

"Freid, I want your opinion" - said the high priest as he looked at the former general of the demon army.

"No matter how we look at it, it's obvious who the traitor is" - Freid answered with a cold and emotionless tone of voice, after all, it didn't matter that he was no longer a pure-blooded demon, he hadn't forgotten his origins.

"I think so too" - nodded the high priest as he watched Daimon smile excitedly, as if he was waiting to be released - "Daimon, our god has sentenced you to death!"

Daimon's smile disappeared when he heard this as the soldiers shouted excitedly.

"Impossible, I am a demon loyal to our lord Alva!" - Daimon roared in fury as he writhed - "You can't do this to me, I have sacrificed too much for our race, I have slain the traitors who tried to annihilate us, I have launched campaigns of conquest on other races so we could get our best slaves!"

"Take him away" - said the high priest as he looked with disgust at the fallen general.

Freid frowned when he heard Daimon's words because instinctively something told him that he was not lying, although at the same time it was stupid to think that the other generals were traitors. He slowly looked at Cattleya, and noticed how she had a frown on her face just like him, though after a few seconds, he noticed how much this woman had changed since he last saw her. She now had enormous demonic power, one that was comparable to his before he became an apostle of her excellence, though this was the strange thing, there was no natural way she could get this power - "Did she just happen to consume some holy medicine that helped her, or am I just overthinking things and she's just a talent that blossoms over time?"

The former demonic general quickly shook his head, after all, how Cattleya increased her power, was none of his business, the only thing that mattered was that she remained loyal to the demonic race.

"General Cattleya, I want you to prepare everything so we can withdraw, this operation turned out to be a failure and I don't want to keep losing our soldiers, not when the war against those filthy humans is not over yet" - said the high priest while looking at the demonic woman.

"I will do so immediately, your excellency" - replied Cattleya while bowing.

The high priest nodded before retreating, though not before instructing Freid to keep an eye on the place because he didn't want the humans to keep attacking them, besides, now that there was only one general with control of all the troops, he needed someone keeping an eye on Cattleya so she wouldn't extend her claws any further than necessary.

Freid nodded when he heard this because he too had thought that the current power the demon woman had was too much, although what they didn't know, was that all these arrangements were useless, after all, the surviving troops were Cattleya's direct subordinates, and she had protected them from the explosions of the human traps, which had caused them to be completely loyal to her.

Cattleya was happy inside, though outwardly she continued to show a serious expression.

"What are you thinking, Cattleya?" - Freid asked as he looked at his former fiancée.

"That it is possible that we are ignoring Daimon's words" - Cattleya replied as she frowned - "Some things he said, make sense, like for example, that one of the generals was a traitor, and possibly he killed him along with the others who fell into the trap with him."

"It makes sense, though that doesn't change the fact that Daimon's actions, caused far more damage than necessary" - Freid replied while shaking his head - "If he had made a strategic retreat and helped uncover the traitor, our casualties would have been far less, though that doesn't matter when everything already ended up being in the worst possible way."

Cattleya did not respond to these words as she "thought" silently.

Freid turned and left the place, not noticing how a small smile had appeared on the woman's face.

"This turned out just as I thought, in fact, it's better this way, at least now I won't have to sacrifice troops in vain" - Cattleya thought while laughing madly - "Oh, you're my lucky star, irregular-kun, a pity that our destiny together is impossible, mostly because despite everything we've done together, I hate you for forcing me to do things I don't want to..."

* * * * *

Cloud frowned when he saw how the demons were retreating, so he quickly asked someone who could see from a distance to check what their enemies were doing.

"Leader Cloud, the demons are gathering at a single point, and it looks like they are preparing some sort of ritual..." - An archer replied as he looked worriedly at his leader.

Cloud frowned as he picked up the crystal sphere he used to contact Cattleya, though he quickly gave up on this idea, after all, now that they had come this far, he didn't want to reveal his spy, not when the demons' movements were still important to his future plans.

"What shall we do, leader Cloud?" - The archer asked as he looked at the blond-haired young man.

"We'll wait for now" - Cloud replied as he narrowed his eyes - "Something tells me they're not preparing an attack or something like that."

The archer looked at him skeptically, though he still followed his instructions, after all, Cloud hadn't failed him so far.
