Chapter 19: Chapter 19: Testing the Pills
Two young women in elegant dresses stood on each side of the Treasure Pavilion entrance, each appearing around seventeen or eighteen, with delicate features, graceful figures, and fair skin that seemed to radiate under the building's golden glow.
"Xiao Yan, considering your young age and unique circumstances, combined with the fact that my pills may cause a stir at the auction, it's best to avoid any unwanted attention. Put on that black cloak you bought earlier," Yao Lao's voice gently reminded him.
"Alright, I'll follow your advice, Teacher." Xiao Yan ducked into a secluded alley and quickly donned the large, dark cloak.
The cloak concealed his face and made his slim figure appear bulky. Now, even someone familiar with him might not recognize him at first glance.
Once he ensured he was sufficiently disguised, Xiao Yan calmly emerged from the alley and walked toward the auction house.
Yao Lao had prepared three types of pills this time: Foundation-Building Pills, Healing Pills, and Soul Recovery Pills. As their names implied, the Foundation-Building Pill increased a soul master's innate soul power by three levels, the Healing Pill rapidly mended wounds, and the Soul Recovery Pill restored a large amount of soul power.
One of the four women approached him as he neared. She took three steps forward, bowed slightly, and asked, "Sir, is there something we can assist you with?"
"This is an auction house, correct? I'd like to sell some items." A dry, elderly voice floated out from beneath the cloak, courtesy of Yao Lao.
"Yes, sir. If you would kindly show me what you wish to auction, we will have our appraisers evaluate it. Only items valued above a thousand gold soul coins qualify for auction," she replied politely, a curious glint in her eyes.
Xiao Yan casually pulled out a jade bottle and gave it a slight shake. "I'm selling pills. Lead me to an appraiser."
"Certainly, sir. Please, follow me." Hearing that it was pills he intended to sell, the woman quickly gestured for him to follow and led him into the auction house.
The interior of the Treasure Pavilion was not as extravagantly decorated as one might expect. The floors were polished white marble, and the walls adorned with various relief carvings. Display cases around the perimeter showcased low-level soul devices, weapons, and armor.
The young woman stopped every few steps, gesturing for Xiao Yan to follow, until they arrived before a room marked "Appraisal Room."
Inside, the space was sparse, with a middle-aged man lounging at a table. Hearing the door, he looked up, and his brows knitted slightly at the sight of the cloaked figure.
"Sir, what do you have for us to appraise today?" the man asked as he stood, flashing a professional smile.
Xiao Yan nodded and placed the jade bottle on the table.
"And this is…?" The appraiser hesitated before uncorking the bottle to catch a faint whiff. His eyes widened in surprise, and he regarded Xiao Yan with growing respect. "Sir, are you perhaps an alchemist? What effects do these pills have?"
"The bottle you're holding contains Foundation-Building Pills. These will directly raise a soul master's innate soul power by three levels." The dry voice continued, "This bottle here contains Healing Pills, which swiftly mend wounds, and this one holds Soul Recovery Pills, capable of quickly restoring lost soul power."
The other appraisers overheard and exchanged shocked glances. A pill that could raise innate soul power by three levels? In the history of Douluo Continent, this was unheard of. Even the famed Xuan Shui Pill, known throughout the land, could only raise it by one level. And yet, this person claimed that his pill could increase it by three. The room buzzed with astonishment.
The lead appraiser hesitated, "Are you sure, sir, that these pills can truly raise innate soul power by three levels? The renowned Xuan Shui Pill from the Xuanming Sect can only raise it by one level, and it's priced at ten thousand gold soul coins apiece."
"Xuan Shui Pill? I know of it. To me, it's just dirt," the old voice responded indifferently. "If you doubt me, feel free to test it. This pill's effects are gentle, with no side effects whatsoever."
Yao Lao's voice echoed in Xiao Yan's mind, "These people are so inexperienced. If the herbs on Douluo Continent weren't so lacking, I could easily concoct pills that would boost innate soul power by ten levels."
"Xiao Yan, hurry with your training. Once you reach the Dou Zhe level, I'll teach you alchemy and let these novices see what true pills are."
The lead appraiser's expression shifted. Handing the bottle back to Xiao Yan, he respectfully said, "Sir, we'll need to verify the effects of your pills before setting a price and listing them for auction. Please follow me."
"Alright," Xiao Yan replied, his tone indifferent.
The young woman who initially guided him stood by, and together, they escorted Xiao Yan into a back room designated for pill evaluation.
Inside, the appraiser summoned a six-year-old boy and performed an initial soul power assessment. Then he had the boy take the pill and repeated the test, confirming that the boy's soul power had indeed increased by three levels. Everyone in the room was astounded.
A large man stepped in next, drawing a dagger and slicing into his arm. Bleeding profusely, he consumed a Healing Pill, and under their eyes, his wound stopped bleeding, sealing with a thin scab. The appraisers then tested the Soul Recovery Pill, finding it to work as described.
"These… these pills are remarkable," the appraiser murmured, eyes wide. He turned to Xiao Yan with a newfound respect. "Sir, if I may, would you mind waiting here? I'll inform the master of the Treasure Pavilion about your pills. Their effects are unprecedented, and she'll want to meet you."
"Alright, but be quick," Xiao Yan replie
