Skyrim System In Westeros

Chapter 65: Chapter 65: Braavos

After nearly a month of sailing against the wind, they finally arrived near Braavos.

Unlike the hot climates of other city-states, this region was made up of several large islands, all densely covered by forests. The surrounding continent had abundant resources such as iron, tin, lead, stone, and various useful materials, and the sea was rich in fish and shellfish.

Braavos was built on several of these large islands and was the most unique and powerful of the free cities. Even the Valyrian Empire had never attempted to conquer it because the Dragonlords had no interest in runaway slaves.

The original inhabitants of Braavos were mostly refugees who had fled from the Valyrian Empire. Among them were slave soldiers, bed slaves, cooks, stable hands, butlers, carpenters, blacksmiths, masons, weavers, fishermen, and kitchen slaves. As a result, there were no slaves in Braavos. The city opposed all forms of the slave trade and had even waged wars to rescue slaves.

Later, people from other lands, such as Andals, Summer Islanders, Ghiscari, Naathians, Ibbenese, and pure-blooded Valyrians in debt or guilty of crimes, also settled here. A variety of religions came together in Braavos, leading to the creation of many temples dedicated to various gods. The city declared that it would never favor any one god over the others.

Naturally, the original language spoken by the escaped slaves was Valyrian. However, over time, it mixed with other languages, evolving into a dialect of Valyrian.

Wright, the sisters, and Oberyn stood on the deck of the ship, already able to see the massive statue of the Titan of Braavos from a distance. The Titan, holding a broken sword and wearing a helmet, had eyes that could hold people within them, with fire burning inside. The statue served as both a statue and a lighthouse.

There were many local Braavosi fishing boats and warships nearby. Wright noticed something strange about the ships and asked Oberyn:

"Why are all the ships here painted purple?"

Oberyn explained, "The purple ships are trophies. The Braavosi use a dark purple dye made from a sea snail to paint the ships they capture."

Wright then asked, "Do we really have to sail through the Titan's legs?"

By now, the ship was already beneath the giant's feet, and Wright wasn't thrilled about it.

"There is a ring of islands surrounding the city, and the other openings have waters that are too shallow for large ships to pass. The only way for a big ship to enter Braavos is to sail beneath the Titan's legs. The Braavosi believe that if a ship passes through there, it will receive the Titan's protection, guaranteeing victory in battle or safety from storms."

Oberyn and the other Dornishmen didn't mind this, but if they were asked to crawl under the crotch of a living person, they would definitely draw their spears and fight desperately.

As the ship drew closer to the Titan, Wright could see more clearly. Beneath the Titan's feet were castles and barracks, with many soldiers coming and going. The Titan statue itself was hollow inside, with arrow slits in the inner thighs and under the skirt, making it a formidable military stronghold. This kind of construction would be nearly impossible to breach without cannons, and the land outside the city was a vast swamp. Holding this position alone would be sufficient. Braavos was a remarkable place.

After passing beneath the Titan's legs, they entered the Braavos inner sea, where they immediately spotted a high aqueduct stretching from the mainland into the sea, then into the heart of Braavos. It supplied fresh water to the city's residents and was known as the Sweetwater Canal.

Due to the single entry point for ships, all merchant ships had to first dock at the grid docks near the Titan statue. Officials of the Sealord were there to inspect goods and collect taxes. However, Oberyn's fleet did not need to stop there and proceeded directly to the Old Clothes Merchant's Dock on the west side of the city. It was packed with ships, and without the Dornish prince's flag, it would have been difficult to even find space to dock.

Wright was relieved to step onto solid land again, no longer feeling the motion of the sea. He followed Oberyn and the others through the city. Braavos was built on several hundred large and small islands, with houses built close to the water. Countless canals ran through the city, connected by hundreds of gray, golden, and red arch bridges, resembling a Venetian city on water in the world of Westeros.

At the Sealord's Palace, the décor was magnificent, having been passed down through dozens of generations of Sealords. It was incredibly wealthy. Daemon Sand went to negotiate with the Sealord's subordinates, while Wright and Oberyn waited in the reception hall. Soon, the current Sealord walked in.

"Prince Oberyn, greetings."

"Your Grace, greetings," Oberyn replied, and they exchanged formal bows.

Daemon Sand introduced, "This is the current Sealord of Braavos: Ferrego Antaryon. This is Lord Wright Baratheon, one of the members of the King's Council and the First Archmage of the Seven Kingdoms, and also Prince Oberyn's son-in-law."

Wright also gave a noble bow. "Your Grace, it's an honor to meet you. I am Wright Baratheon."

"Such a young man to be part of the King's Council, your future is limitless. And you are Prince Oberyn's son-in-law? Well, in that case, you and Prince Oberyn are welcome to stay at the Sealord's Palace."

Oberyn remarked, "Don't you need to head to the Iron Bank? The large building to the left outside the Sealord's Palace is where it is."

Wright responded, "So close? Since it's still early, I'll take care of business first."

Ferrego said, "Once you've finished, feel free to explore the city. Tonight, I'll host a small banquet for Prince Oberyn and you. Be sure to return before nightfall."

Wright: "Thank you very much for your generous hospitality."

Wright arrived at the Iron Bank.

Many noble families from the Seven Kingdoms had borrowed money from the bank, so there were many formal documents in the Red Keep. This time, he was representing Storm's End for the loan, and the documents already had the seal and signature of Renly. However, many details still needed to be discussed with the Iron Bank, such as how to transport the gold, repayment schedules, and so on.

After Wright left, Oberyn and Sealord Ferrego immediately left the Sealord's Palace as well. They headed to the Palace of Truth, located on a solitary island at the city's center, where a few people had been waiting in the conference hall for some time.

Braavos rarely faced storms, as the surrounding islands provided protection. The city itself only had a gentle breeze. The meeting hall's walls were open, allowing a full view of Braavos, and the air was filled with the sights of the city.

On the conference table, there were fruits and fine wine, arranged like a banquet.

When Sealord Ferrego entered, he took the seat at the head of the table. His bodyguard, Qarro Volentin, did not follow him in but stayed outside to converse with the nearby guards.

Oberyn casually found an empty seat. Daemon Sand followed Oberyn inside, and upon noticing several individuals already in the gallery next to him, sat down there as well.

As the surrounding guards withdrew from the meeting hall to stand watch from a distance, Qarro Volentin entered and stood behind the Sealord.

Oberyn sat comfortably, placing one foot on the armrest of his chair, and took an apple, biting into it. "There are some new faces in the audience. Qarro Volentin, why don't you introduce them?"
