Chapter 9: Chapter 9: The Dragon Queen's Morning Visit
Chapter 9: The Dragon Queen's Morning Visit
Without even the courtesy of knocking, Leon immediately knew who was coming—it had to be that crazy dragon queen.
He quickly pulled his hand away from Luna's head and leaned back against the headboard, trying to appear as indifferent as possible.
The sound of high heels slowly tapping on the floor grew closer.
Rossweise, now in her casual attire, strode into the bedroom.
Her silver hair, usually meticulously groomed, was now left to flow freely down her back, resembling a silver cape. The makeup on her face was much lighter than usual, but even without any effort, Rossweise was still stunning.
Gone was the anger and ferocity from her dragon eyes the night before. Now, only the laziness that suited a queen remained.
"Good morning, Mother," Luna chirped as she jumped off the bed, looking up at Rossweise with a bright smile.
"Good morning, Luna. How long has your father been awake?"
"Just now! Before Daddy woke up, I bandaged his hand like you told me to."
Rossweise nodded in approval. "Well done, Luna."
Luna's eyes lit up. "Thank you, Mother!"
There's an old saying that describes a "strict father and loving mother." But in this unusual household, it seemed to be the opposite.
Leon found himself playing the role of the kind, gentle father, while Rossweise embodied the strict mother.
Just one compliment from her had made Luna beam with pride. Leon quietly stored that little observation in the back of his mind.
"Go play in the backyard for now, Luna."
"Hmm..."
Luna fiddled with her small fingers, pouting slightly. "But... I want to stay with Daddy..."
"What was that?" Rossweise's tone turned cold.
"N-Nothing! I'll go to the backyard now!"
With that, the little dragon girl quickly scampered out of the room.
Once she was gone, silence settled in again. Leon and Rossweise stared at each other, a coldness between them that was hard to miss.
After a few moments, Leon broke the tension. "Don't you think you're a bit too harsh on her?"
"We dragons raise our young like this," Rossweise replied indifferently.
"But she isn't fully a dragon, is she?"
Rossweise's expression darkened. "And whose fault do you think that is?"
Leon raised an eyebrow, a sly grin forming on his face. "Oh, did I touch a nerve?"
Sensing he had struck a chord, he pressed on, "How was I supposed to know I'd hit the mark in one try? But hey, the kid turned out cute, don't you think?"
Rossweise's jaw clenched tightly, and the laziness in her dragon eyes vanished, replaced by the familiar coldness from before.
"She's a dragon, Leon. 'Cute' is an insult to dragons."
"You're pretty cute too."
"…I cannot have a reasonable conversation with you, human."
"Then why keep me around? You can throw me to the wolves or kill me right now. Wouldn't that be simpler?"
Rossweise let out a cold laugh and turned away, sitting on the edge of the bed with her back to him. "I told you, I won't let you die. As long as you're alive, I can keep tormenting you."
Hearing this, Leon's eyes flickered with a subtle shift in his emotions. After a pause, he responded, "But isn't seeing the man who took your purity every day its own form of torture?"
Rossweise showed no signs of being bothered. "So what? As long as I can disgust you, it's worth it."
Leon chuckled without a care. "Then I'll make sure not to get disgusted. Let you suffer alone."
"You think I'm scared of you?"
Leon raised his voice, about to say more, "Scared of you? I—"
Rossweise suddenly stood up, and Leon instinctively swallowed his words.
Every time she got this close, nothing good ever followed.
But this time, she didn't do what he expected. She didn't humiliate him through the usual means.
Instead, she walked to the wardrobe, casually grabbing a set of new men's clothes, which she tossed onto the bed beside Leon.
"Get dressed. Go play with Luna in the backyard."
Leon glanced at the neatly folded clothes, a bit puzzled. "If you want to play with your daughter, why don't you do it yourself? Why drag me into it?"
His words weren't entirely random; Leon had noticed something odd about Rossweise's behavior.
Take the injury to his hand, for instance. Rossweise could've easily bandaged it herself, yet she'd insisted on having Luna—a barely over one-year-old dragon child—do it instead.
And now, despite clearly wanting to spend time with her daughter, she was pushing the responsibility onto Leon, who had only just woken up after being in a coma for two years.
It wasn't hard to see why dragons raised under this kind of twisted parenting might end up... well, extreme.
"What do you mean, 'your daughter'? She's yours too, isn't she?" Rossweise replied coolly.
"I—"
Leon found himself at a loss for words. She wasn't wrong.
"I am the Queen of the Silver Dragons. I can't spend my days looking after a child like some common woman. A queen has her duties, and I hope you understand that, Leon."
"And since when do Dragon Slayers babysit?" Leon shot back.
"You've already been bedded by a dragon. What kind of Dragon Slayer are you now?"
"..."
"You're just a tool for me to vent my anger on, Leon. Nothing more. Now, do as I say and go play with Luna. She enjoys your company."
At this point, Leon couldn't argue anymore. He climbed out of bed and began dressing.
Once he put the clothes on, he realized they weren't human garments. The style clearly resembled dragonkind's attire.
Leon stood before the mirror, feeling slightly out of place.
Rossweise, noticing his awkwardness, walked over and began adjusting his collar without asking.
Leon was a little taller than Rossweise, so when she stood on her toes to fix his clothes, his lips lightly brushed against her fingers.
The gesture brought back a memory for Leon.
He recalled his time training under his master. Whenever his master went out, his wife would always help him with his clothes in the same way, fussing over every little detail. They were a loving couple, even though his master could be unreliable and eccentric outside the home. In front of his wife, he was always a good husband.
"It's done."
Rossweise's voice snapped Leon out of his thoughts. She stepped back and looked him up and down, nodding in approval. "That's better. Now, go."
Without saying a word, Leon headed for the door.
Rossweise watched him leave, her eyes following him until the door closed with a soft thud.
After a brief moment of silence, she walked over to the window, taking a deep breath before slowly exhaling.
A few moments later, a small dragon, no bigger than a pigeon, fluttered onto the windowsill.
"A messenger dragon..."
These dragon subspecies were used to deliver messages across different realms.
The small creature had a red ribbon tied around its back, with a tiny bamboo tube attached to it.
Rossweise took the bamboo tube and opened it, pulling out a letter.
After reading the first few lines, her brows furrowed slightly. "Why would my sister choose this time to visit..."
———
Leon left the room, walking down the hallway toward the temple's backyard.
Along the way, he encountered at least a dozen dragon guards, far more than there had been the day before when he had made his escape.
It was clear now—his "successful" escape the previous night had been orchestrated by Rossweise. She had let him get away, only to drag him to the Empire's doorstep, forcing him to confront the reality of having a home he could never return to, all while she humiliated him.
That's why Leon thought Rossweise was insane.
Beneath her elegant and stern exterior, she harbored a twisted desire for madness and cruelty.
Leon accepted his misfortune.
'Of all the people to end up at the mercy of, why did it have to be Rossweise?'
He couldn't escape, couldn't die, and now he was nothing more than her outlet for frustration—
And, apparently, he was also the designated babysitter.
Still, Leon didn't feel like he had completely lost.
Because for Rossweise to disgust him, she had to actively work at it, putting in effort to torment him.
On the other hand, Leon didn't need to do anything to disgust her—he just had to exist. Simply being alive and in her line of sight was enough.
After all, considering the long history of animosity between humans and dragons, Leon was probably the only human who had ever managed to get a dragon pregnant.
As absurd as it seemed to humans, for Rossweise, it was the most revolting thing imaginable.
Even so, Leon hadn't given up on the idea of escaping.
Just like he had told her the night before, Rossweise could strip him of his dignity and pride, but she could never kill his spirit as a Dragon Slayer.
If he saw an opportunity to flee, he would seize it.
As these thoughts occupied his mind, Leon rounded several corners in the hallway.
When he neared the back gate of the temple, he suddenly saw a familiar small figure standing at the end of the corridor.
Thick, black hair streaked with hints of silver, a tiny tail hanging at her feet, and a luxurious dress—complete with delicate white stockings that peeked out from beneath the hem of her skirt.
It was Luna.
Leon raised his hand, ready to greet her, but quickly realized something was off.
Luna wasn't smiling. In fact, her face was completely expressionless, and her usually warm, soft eyes were cold and unfeeling, staring directly at Leon as if he were a stranger or, worse, an enemy.
For the brief time Leon had spent with her, he had grown accustomed to her gentle, innocent nature. But now, those friendly eyes were filled with an icy indifference.
Leon pressed his lips together, wondering if she was angry because he had taken too long to come meet her. Was that why she seemed upset?
After a moment of hesitation, Leon waved at her, calling out, "Luna, sorry I kept you waiting. Your mom sent me to play with you. Shall we—"
Before he could finish his sentence, Luna turned abruptly and ran out through the back gate, disappearing into the courtyard.
Leon immediately sprinted after her, but by the time he reached the yard, Luna was nowhere to be seen.
Scratching his head in confusion, Leon muttered to himself, "Kids can be so unpredictable... No wonder Rossweise pushed this task onto me. She gets to avoid the trouble while I have to deal with it."
Despite his grumbling, Leon continued toward the garden, hoping to find Luna somewhere among the flower beds or trees.
