Chapter 11: The Trap of Shadows
Kilua crouched low, his ears straining to catch the faintest sound. The dense forest had grown unnervingly silent, as if holding its breath. Beside him, Alluka clung to his arm, her wide eyes scanning the darkness. The only light came from the faint glow of the crescent moon filtering through the trees, casting eerie patterns on the ground.
"They're here," Kilua whispered, his voice barely audible.
Alluka nodded, her grip tightening. "What do we do?" she asked, her voice trembling.
Kilua took a deep breath, forcing himself to remain calm. "We don't run. Not this time."
The Zoldycks had been toying with them, slowly closing the noose. Kilua could feel their presence like a shadow creeping ever closer. His family was skilled at this—turning fear into a weapon, making their prey feel helpless before delivering the final blow. But Kilua wasn't just their prey. He was one of them, and he knew how they thought.
"We'll set a trap," Kilua said, his voice firm. "They think they have us cornered, but we'll turn the tables."
Alluka hesitated, then nodded. "What do you need me to do?"
Kilua smiled faintly. "Just trust me."
He quickly scanned the area, his mind racing. The terrain was rough and uneven, with roots and fallen branches littering the ground. Perfect for an ambush. Kilua began moving with silent precision, placing obstacles in strategic locations and marking paths that would force their pursuers into a bottleneck.
As he worked, Alluka watched him with a mixture of awe and anxiety. She had always known Kilua was skilled, but seeing him like this—focused, determined, and utterly in his element—was a reminder of just how much he had endured to protect her.
"They'll come from the east," Kilua murmured, more to himself than to her. "They'll expect us to run west, so we'll use that against them."
When the trap was ready, Kilua led Alluka to a hiding spot high in the branches of a large tree. From their vantage point, they could see the path below, where the Zoldycks would inevitably pass. Kilua's heart pounded as they waited, the tension in the air so thick it was almost suffocating.
Minutes felt like hours, and then, finally, the sound of footsteps broke the silence. Kilua's eyes narrowed as he caught sight of a figure moving through the shadows. It was Illumi.
Kilua's breath caught. Of all his siblings, Illumi was the one he had feared the most. Cold, calculating, and utterly relentless, Illumi was the embodiment of everything Kilua had tried to escape. Seeing him now, moving with predatory grace, sent a chill down Kilua's spine.
"Stay quiet," Kilua whispered to Alluka. "No matter what happens."
Alluka nodded, her face pale but resolute.
As Illumi stepped into the clearing, Kilua sprang into action. With a swift motion, he triggered the first part of the trap—a series of branches and rocks cascading down toward Illumi. But Illumi moved with inhuman speed, dodging the debris effortlessly.
"You've gotten sloppy, Kilua," Illumi said, his voice calm and emotionless. "Did you really think this would work?"
Kilua gritted his teeth, his mind racing. He had anticipated Illumi's skill, but seeing it firsthand was a harsh reminder of just how dangerous his brother was.
"This isn't about winning," Kilua called out, his voice steady despite the fear coursing through him. "It's about buying time."
Illumi tilted his head, his expression unreadable. "Time for what? There's nowhere for you to go."
Kilua didn't respond. Instead, he dropped from the tree, landing lightly on his feet. He positioned himself between Illumi and Alluka, his stance defensive but unwavering.
"You won't take her," Kilua said firmly.
Illumi's eyes flicked to Alluka, then back to Kilua. "This isn't a choice, little brother. You know that. Father wants you both back, and I've been tasked with bringing you home. Don't make this harder than it needs to be."
Kilua clenched his fists. "We're not going back. Not to that life."
Illumi sighed, as if disappointed. "You're being foolish. You can't escape who you are. You're a Zoldyck. That's not something you can run from."
"I'm not running anymore," Kilua shot back. "And I'm not like you. I'll protect Alluka, no matter what."
Illumi's expression hardened. "Then you leave me no choice."
With a blur of motion, Illumi attacked, his movements almost too fast to track. Kilua barely managed to dodge the first strike, his body reacting instinctively. The brothers exchanged blows, the clash of their abilities sending shockwaves through the forest.
Alluka watched from the tree, her hands clasped tightly together. She wanted to help, but she knew using her powers could make things worse. For now, all she could do was trust Kilua.
As the fight raged on, Kilua realized he couldn't keep this up forever. Illumi was stronger, faster, and more experienced. But Kilua had something Illumi didn't—a reason to fight. And he would use that to his advantage.
In a desperate move, Kilua led Illumi toward the final part of his trap—a concealed pit lined with sharpened stakes. At the last second, Kilua leapt out of the way, and Illumi fell into the pit. But before he could celebrate, Illumi's hand shot out, grabbing the edge and pulling himself up.
Kilua's heart sank. Illumi was relentless, and this was far from over.
