Shadow of the Hunt

Chapter 10: A Choice Between Blood and Freedom

Kilua's heart was pounding in his chest, the rhythmic sound of his footsteps merging with the cacophony of the forest around him. His breath was shallow, his muscles burning from the constant motion. But there was no time to rest—no time to reflect on what was happening. The Zoldycks were closing in on them, and if they were going to survive, they needed to keep moving.

He looked over at Alluka, who was still beside him, her face pale and focused. Her powers were still dormant, but Kilua could feel the tension in the air—the fear of what might happen if they triggered her abilities. The last thing they needed was her powers spiraling out of control.

"We need to find shelter," Kilua said, his voice tight. "We can't keep running forever."

Alluka didn't respond immediately. She was scanning the dense forest, her eyes searching for something—anything—that could offer them protection. Her silence only added to the weight in Kilua's chest. He had known from the moment they decided to leave that it wouldn't be easy, but he had underestimated just how much danger they were in. His family's reach was long, and their resources were nearly limitless. If they wanted to stay hidden, they would have to rely on more than just speed.

Alluka suddenly stopped, her eyes locking with Kilua's. Her voice was low, barely a whisper. "We need to make a choice."

Kilua frowned. "What do you mean?"

She hesitated, her fingers twitching at her side. "You can't keep running forever. Eventually, they'll catch up. And when they do, you'll have to face them. All of them. You'll have to decide if you want to fight or go back."

Kilua clenched his fists. The thought of returning to the Zoldyck estate—of facing his family again—was unbearable. The memories of the cold, emotionless walls, of the unspoken expectations, made his stomach churn. He had left that life behind. He couldn't go back to it.

"I'll never go back," Kilua said firmly. "I'll fight, if it comes to that. I won't let them control me anymore."

Alluka's eyes softened, but there was a sadness in them. "You're not the only one they'll come for, Kilua. They won't stop until they have you—and me. And if they can't have us, they'll destroy anyone who tries to protect us. You know that, don't you?"

Kilua's throat tightened. He had known this was a possibility. But hearing it spoken out loud was different. Alluka wasn't just his sister—she was a weapon, a living weapon that could bring unimaginable power. His family would stop at nothing to reclaim her, to use her as a tool in their endless pursuit of dominance.

"I can't let that happen," Kilua whispered, the words like a vow.

Alluka nodded, her gaze steady. "Then we have to make a decision now. No more running."

Kilua felt a knot form in his stomach. He had been hoping for a way out—a way to escape the endless cycle of violence and manipulation. But now, it seemed like there was no easy way out. Either they would fight, or they would be hunted down forever.

The silence between them grew heavy, filled with the weight of the decision that lay before them. Kilua had always known that his family would never let him go so easily. The Zoldycks were relentless, unforgiving, and they would not rest until they had reclaimed what they believed was theirs. But Alluka's words echoed in his mind: they couldn't keep running forever.

Alluka spoke again, her voice calm but resolute. "We fight on our terms. We take control of our destiny."

Kilua met her gaze, his heart pounding in his chest. It was the only option left. If they were going to survive, they would have to take a stand—against his family, against their legacy, and against everything they had been raised to believe.

He nodded slowly, a surge of determination flooding through him. "We fight," he said, his voice unwavering.

With that decision made, Kilua turned toward the forest ahead, his body tense and ready for whatever awaited them. They couldn't outrun their past forever, but they could fight to shape their future.

The sound of footsteps once again reached their ears, this time closer, more deliberate. The Zoldyck assassins were near, and they were coming for them.

Kilua's heart skipped a beat, but he didn't flinch. This time, they wouldn't run. They would face whatever came next.

Kilua took a deep breath, the weight of his bloodline hanging heavy in the air. The Zoldycks were coming—but this time, Kilua was ready to fight back.
