Chapter 278: Chapter 279: As Expected
It's no wonder Tsunade was furious.
These matters are usually discussed by the higher-ups. Once an agreement is reached, an announcement is made, funds are prepared, and payments are distributed gradually.
But the Sarutobi clan, because of the complaints within their ranks, decided to go straight to the Hokage's office to ask about it.
Do they think compensation payments are like salaries, where you finish work and immediately demand payment?
Under Tsunade's verbal assault, the Sarutobi representative slunk away with their tail between their legs.
When Yan heard about this, he nearly died laughing.
You have to admit, the Sarutobi clan has a knack for comedy.
Who in their right mind would go to the Hokage's office to ask about something like this?
Are they bored with their peaceful lives, or do they think Tsunade doesn't have enough to worry about?
They're just asking for trouble.
Itachi looked confused, Fugaku had a strange expression, and Mikoto's mouth twitched as she pretended not to hear. Only Sasuke, who didn't understand anything, looked completely lost.
"The Hokage must be really angry," Fugaku remarked.
He hadn't expected that inviting Yan over for dinner would lead to such juicy gossip.
What were the Sarutobi clan thinking?
If they wanted to ask, they should've waited until the Third Hokage returned.
Instead, a few clan elders waddled straight to the Hokage's office.
What were they expecting? A warm welcome?
It's a miracle Tsunade held back. Fugaku thought that if it were him, he'd probably be ready to kill someone.
"She was so angry she went broke three desks," Yan said with a laugh, gesturing with his chopsticks.
"Take the kids inside to eat," Fugaku signaled to his wife, Mikoto. She nodded and led the clueless Sasuke away.
Some things are better kept from Sasuke, so he doesn't go blabbing outside and stir up trouble for the Uchiha clan.
"Itachi, why do you think the Hokage was so angry? And why were the Sarutobi clan in such a hurry to go to the Hokage's office about this?"
Yan casually tossed out the question, glancing at Itachi, who was starting to grow into his own.
Fugaku, intrigued, put down his chopsticks. He wanted to see how Itachi would answer and whether this was a small test from Yan.
Under the gaze of Yan and his father, Itachi fell silent, deep in thought.
Yan and Fugaku didn't rush him, waiting quietly instead.
Noticing Itachi's slight frown, Yan knew he had fallen into his usual cycle of overthinking.
The Third Hokage once described Itachi like this:
"Uchiha Itachi is a child who can think like a Hokage."
This is Itachi's strength, but it can also become his weakness.
"Do you feel like the Sarutobi clan has crossed a line, almost like they're forcing her hand?"
Before Itachi could answer, Yan spoke up first.
"Yes."
Though there were slight differences, Itachi's thoughts were close to what Yan had said.
To Tsunade, as the Hokage, the Sarutobi clan's actions were indeed crossing the line.
To put it more bluntly, it felt like a subtle form of coercion!!!
"Our Sarutobi clan has sacrificed so much. Shouldn't you, Hokage-sama, take the initiative and give us what we deserve?"
The pressure within the clan is growing. Hokage-sama, you need to understand our situation.
"*Sigh*..."
Yan sighed, reaching out to pat Itachi's head. Itachi instinctively wanted to dodge but stopped himself.
He let Yan's hand rest on his head, even giving it a couple of pats.
Fugaku watched with a strange expression as Yan acted like an elder patting his son's head.
"Smart kids tend to have no friends."
"Our Hokage-sama is so angry... simply because she's out of money."
Itachi: "....."
Fugaku: "....."
If Yan hadn't looked so serious, Itachi and Fugaku might have thought he was joking.
Anyone else would think the Sarutobi clan was causing trouble or trying to force her hand, but Yan made it sound like Tsunade was just mad because she was broke.
Wasn't that answer a bit too casual?
But then again, considering that Tsunade's main focus since becoming Hokage had been making money, making money, and making more money, Fugaku and Itachi fell silent.
Maybe they were overcomplicating things. It didn't need to be so complex.
Thinking simply might be better. Overanalyzing would only give them a headache.
While Tsunade wouldn't outright punish the Sarutobi clan, she wasn't exactly easy to deal with when she was angry.
If she couldn't directly confront the Sarutobi clan, she'd take it to the Third Hokage instead.
So, Tsunade wrote down everything the Sarutobi clan had done on a scroll and sent it to the Third Hokage.
Let the Third Hokage see for himself how his clan has been acting up while he's been away from the village.
"These idiots!!!"
When the Third Hokage received the scroll and opened it, he nearly coughed up blood in anger.
While he was in the village, he had repeatedly warned and reassured his clan, afraid they might do something reckless. But who would have thought they'd jump into trouble on their own because of some internal pressure? Thankfully, Tsunade isn't the paranoid type. If it were Danzo in her place, the Sarutobi clan would probably already be on his hit list.
The Third Hokage wished he could fly back to Konohagakure immediately and give his clan members a good beating. Who gave them permission to act like this? Did they think the clan didn't have enough problems already?
"What has the Hokage's assistant been doing?"
"Reporting to the Third Hokage, the assistant has been resting these past few days and hasn't been to the Hokage's office."
Although the Anbu ninja delivering the scroll didn't understand why the Third Hokage was asking about Yan's movements, he answered truthfully.
