Chapter 3: Thoughts on abdication.
Waking up to the news of your betrothal was the worst ways to start a day.
Christina called me early that morning sounding really upset.
"What's the problem,Christina?" I yawned. Trying not to doze off. My class was in the afternoon so I was still meant to be asleep.
"Soraya, I'm not sure how to put this to you ." She hesitated. "I just didn't want you to hear it from someone else.
I sat up in bed. What could possibly make her sound this stressed.
"What is it,Christina. You're scaring me ".
"Oh dear! The queen got an offer from the king of Darkey. They're were looking to form an alliance."
I wasn't liking where this was going" So what? What does that have to do with me? Surely a merger between two royal families are not that common but it shouldn't have anything to do with me?"
Christina sighed through the phone. No!
"I'm sorry, Soraya. You're to marry the second prince who became the crown prince."
"Crown prince Willem?" I scoffed.
"Really?" I was in disbelief.
I didn't know if I was being pranked.
I cut the call hurriedly and called my mother.
She picked on the first ring.
"Morning, mother. What is this news I am hearing about myself from other people?".
A pause.
"If you're talking about your betrothal to Willem, then it is true".
"What the fuck?!"I yelled at her. At this point I didn't care if my roommates heard me.
"If I were you, Soraya. I'd mind my language". She said coldly. How could she be so calm after what she had done to me?
"Fuck you!!" I forced out."You sell me off for a merger without my permission and you expect me to be happy? What did you expect me to do, Queen Laesa? Huh?! Fall at your knees and beg you? No, you don't get to do this to me. Not when I have been so forgiving of everything you do to me?"
How was this possible? In what universe do people arrange marriage for grown ups.
"I understand that you're upset ..."she tried speaking.
"Nuh uh, I don't think you do. Because if you did, you would understand that I would have been liked to be included in the decision about my engagement. This is fucking wrong, mother. And I am not going to stand for it. The royal family be damned. I am abdicating tomorrow. Bye, mother".
I cut the call and threw my phone on the bed.
What the hell? Does she think she can turn me into a puppet like she did with Kael? Hell no!
I grabbed my phone off the bed and checked what the news was saying. It was everywhere. The news of the crown princess of Delsh and the crown prince of Darkey was the news of the century.
No one saw it coming. I didn't, either. Did the crown prince know about this.
The crown prince of Darkey was the second son of the royal family. He never appeared in public. How on earth did he become the crown prince with his older sister still alive?
So, I was to marry a faceless person?
No way was I going to be the only face in the news while he gets to keep his privacy.
Shit! I just realized I told my mother I was abdicating. Did I really mean that?
I have no idea.
An hour later, I walked out of my room to meet the living room empty meaning Heather and Bree were still asleep.
I began cooking breakfast. All those swearing must have taken a lot of energy. Oh Lord! I swore at my mother.
I had been angry when I spoke to her. Maybe I should call her back?
No I shouldn't.
Ding!
A notification from pinstagram.
I dropped the pan and turned off the gas.
It was from Henry.
I heard about your engagement. You don't really plan on getting married to him, do you?
The imbecile had the guts to actually message me.
Why is everyone testing my patience today?
I have never been so pissed off in a long while.
I ignored him.
"I will never understand early risers like you" Heather's voice came from the door.
Her blonde hair looked like a nest.
"Hi Heather, how was your date last night?".
She immediately started smiling and blushing.
"Heather!!! Awwn! Look at you , you're blushing".
We were both giggling when Bree grumbled out of her room.
"What's causing so much ruckus? I'm trying to sleep!!".
Heather and I exchanged a look before bursting into a laughing fit.
Bree took a seat at the counter and put her head between her hands.
"Ugh, I couldn't sleep last night." She complained.
"I mean, you never sleep at night, boo. You're a dentistry major. Do you guys know the concept of sleep?" Heather slapped Bree's back.
"I think I'm going to drop out guys"she moaned.
"Trust me, when you're spending your money in the future, you'll be glad you didn't drop out." I smiled at her.
She rolled her eyes"Thanks guys, I'll be sure to thank you when I make it."
The sarcasm wasn't missed. Considering the fact that her dad was stinkingly rich. She could drop out and decide to start her business and would be alright.
"Oh my gee!!" Heather screamed.
I turned to her.she was holding her phone with a shocked look .
"What's it?" Bree cast a look of annoyance at her.
"Guys, the news is saying that Crown princess Soraya is getting married to Crown prince Willem."
"Really?" Bree sat up.
"Yeah, see"Heather pushed the phone towards us.
"Oh no! Is it an arranged marriage?" Bree groaned. "Poor Soraya. I can't imagine her having to do this when she was just coronated, what? Two weeks ago?".
I felt relieved that she actually saw through the facade of a love marriage.
"Yeah, but if they're dating secretly, that shouldn't be a problem".
"How old are they anway? Like 18?".
"Princess Soraya is 18 and Willem is 18" I supplied.
"At least they're both legal" Bree shrugged and shook her head.
I felt guilty. Sooner or later, I was going to have to tell them the truth.
