Reincarnation of a Hunter

Chapter 6.2 - The Bastard of Westphalia (6)

It seems like the decision to make me a Lord was only recently made.

“I’ll take care of all the other stuff. I’ll have the five signet rings made with gold. And even a gold thread for the heraldic banner, which will cost the Count a fortune.”

Someone here understood that I took a tumble.

Even though I didn’t know the exact circumstances, I knew that the Count’s family was trying to use me.

“You’re a smart person. Would you like to come with me to Marseille?” “All my relatives live there. I would love to live there for a long time.” “Sheesh. Anyway, thank you for your asking.”

Seeing me mumbling, the Officer paused for a while and then spoke up.

“If you have someone you want to take with you, now is a good time to do it. Everybody doesn’t know what’s going on.” “Really? I can’t wait to get to the administration. See you!”

Watching Eric’s back as he raced toward the administration building, the officer shook his head in disappointment.

Because in his eyes, Eric was a very capable and generous man.

Maybe I’ll send my second son to Marseille.’

His eldest son was appointed to become the next Minister of Culture, while his second son was still studying.

The second child was also quite a smart kid, so I thought Eric would like him.

‘I’ll have to ask my second son to pack his bags right away.’

Same time of day. The former Count of Westphalia and Countess Laurian are having a conversation.

“Dad! You’re sending Chloe away, she’s like my little sister!” “Calm down, there are plenty of smart kids.” “But…” “I decided to send Maria along instead.”

Countess Laurian’s face brightened at his words.

“Really? He’s taking that ugly girl with him?”

Yes. They already signed off on the divorce.” “Hahaha!”

If nothing else, he was glad that he would no longer have to see his mistress Maria, and her son, Noah.

Laurian called the maid.

“Is Head Maid Chloe there?” “Yes” “Tell her to come here.”

A few moments later. As Chloe entered, Laurian spoke up.

“Chloe, you must leave with Eric.” “What? Where to…” “You are the Head Maid of the Marseille, starting today.”

Chloe wondered what this was all about.

Marseille was a land so far away that you won’t know its exact location.

‘What on earth am I supposed to do in such a faraway place?’

“Do you want me to do three jobs?” “What? Hahaha! What do you mean, It just means, go and live happy with Eric.” “…” “It breaks my heart to see him go, but what can I do, he needs to.”

Chloe’s face blushed with Laurian’s words.

She clenched her fist, jumped, and shouted.

 “I’m not going!”

Chloe’s a simple maid, but she was a daughter of a nobleman. She’s not someone who could be called around.

The former Count of Westphalia, who was watching at that time, spoke up.

“Eric asked me to take you with him, and I already agreed.”

Only when Chloe heard those words, did she realize what happened. She also remembered what Eric said before.

I said, I’ll call you soon, and you can’t say no.’

If Chloe refuses to go with Eric, he would use the attempted poisoning case against her.

Which Countess Laurian could stop if she set her mind to it.

If you’re willing to put your dignity on the line to deal with Eric, you should be able to get at least one of your handmaidens out to him.

And yet, they abandoned me. What the heck!’

Laurian laughed wickedly, and Chloe was enraged by the betrayal.

Earlier, Laurian even had called her a useless person.

I’m a noble and this is how you are treating me! I’ve been loyal to you for years, and you’ve treated me like a maid or a slave! Laurian, you will regret this moment for the rest of your life!’

With so much anger, Chloe left the room, and Countess Laurian did not even go after her.

Early that morning, people moving to Marseille gathered in front of the Lord’s residence.

The first group of migrants to go with Eric would be my mother, Maria, former Knight Commander Pierre, and his son Martin, the officer’s son Pascal, and Chloe.

The others would leave on the second wave in a month or two.

I looked around at the people I could now call my own.

These are the people I asked to come with me, followed without any hesitation.

Like Sir Pierre, some of them are from Marseille, but most of them have thrown themselves into an uncertain future.

I took each of them by the hand and thanked them.

Lastly, I held my mother’s hands tightly.

“You suddenly got divorced because of me.” “Don’t worry about your mother. It was because of you that I left home and endured the struggle of being a mistress. Now that you’re here, I have no regrets about the Count.” “Then you should get remarried soon.”

My mother said, without responding to my joke.

“I don’t know what will happen, but as long as we’re alive, we’ll make something happen. Let’s not give up hope.”

My mother could not seem to be happy even though I became a Lord. Perhaps she felt that Marseille was abandoned.

“Sure. Don’t worry. I’m the one with the big head, don’t I?” “I’m glad you think so.”

Looking at her mother, Eric once again was determined to develop the land for himself, for her, and for the greater future.

I just couldn’t end this life as a tiny Viscount on the outskirts of town.

We had to hit the road without further delay.

With a loud voice, I instructed Martin, who was leading the convoy.

“Let’s get going!” “Yes, my Lord”

Martin’s response was surprising.

“Calling me Lord makes me sound so great.” “How do you want me to address you?” “A great hero?” “Pfft, I’ll just call you Lord.”

With a smirk, Martin ordered the wagons to leave.

Feeling the rattle of the departing carriage, I lay down in the wagon, as I always did, and looked up at the sky.

And the sync rate that’s always in the corner of the mind.

I didn’t get to 100% before I was kicked out of the family.

Better this way. I’m leaving knowing what the House of Westphalia was up to.

The fence that separates us from our family.

A family that looks even uglier now that it’s off the fence.

As a mere means of use for my family, I set out for the land that would become my first stepping stone.
