Chapter 5: The Example
"Fuck I think I'm going to puke," Harry said.
"My hands are going to be fucked tomorrow," Luke said.
Firing their guns hundreds of times had made their hands sore as shit.
"Stop whining and follow me." I led the four toward a metal table where four kits could be seen laid out.
"These are your new outfits. All black tactical gear with body armor. Combat knife along with flashlight, Baton, and pepper spray."
"Sweet!"
"Hell yeah!"
"Now we're talking."
The four put on their new outfits and looked pretty intimidating.
"Remember you are still in the trial phase for two weeks. If I see any bad behavior or slacking, you're getting cut from the guard's team.
And If I see someone with good enough qualities, I'll promote them to lead a personal unit."
"Yes sir!" The four said before everyone laughed.
Despite them understanding why all of this needed to be done they were still goofballs who wanted to fuck around sometimes, and he wouldn't stop them as long as it didn't affect the running of the society.
"Now let's go to the church where Cassandra will be delivering the news. It's our job to protect her and make sure people understand that we are leading now. When a few fall in line the rest will follow."
All five of them hopped into his black Chevy before driving toward the church which was still empty except for a few main people.
Hopping out of the car the four guards started to take different positions to be able to guard all angles around him and the Council.
Of course, he had taught them basic shit, but they were still amateurs. Good thing they only had to guard against other civilians.
"This is Gordie, he made the work schedules." Cassandra introduced a geeky Spanish kid who blushed under Cassandra's praise.
"Good work. These are important to helping run the town." I patted Gordie on the shoulder, and he seemed to appreciate the gesture.
"And this is my friend Will who helped me create a small team to count every single piece of food and item in the stores," Allie said with a smile but seemed kind of sad
"Good work. What do you think about being a general officer for food prep? You'll overlook everyone who comes into work for the cafeteria and teach them how to cook food until eventually, everyone can do it. You will keep track of how much food we're using and who gets more or less rations."
Will seemed to think for a little before looking at Allie and Cassandra and nodded.
"Since Cassandra thinks you are a good leader then I'll agree to be the general officer for food prep or whatever it is." Will smiled.
"Haha!" Everyone laughed before we talked over the speech and people started showing up.
Finally, everyone was sitting in the church while Cassandra stood on stage while the four guards were in each corner of the church keeping watch.
Of course, with me here, nothing could happen, but this was a good experience for them to learn.
"What do you mean prepare?" Kelly asked.
"As some people have already figured out, we are in the middle of nowhere with forest all around us. We don't know how long we might be trapped here, and we have a limited number of supplies."
"That's why we have named this town New Ham and have created a Council to make decisions regarding the town."
"The council will guard the food and all eating times will be marked on a new schedule that you can find posted in the church and at the high school. Everyone will have jobs and if you don't show up for your job your food rations will be docked unless reported sick to the council."
"Who made you the leader!" someone screamed in the back causing a few yells of agreement.
Cassandra who was starting to feel some tightness in her chest looked over at John who decided it was time to stand up.
"I created the council." My smooth authoritative voice echoed inside the church causing the chattering to disappear.
"Who are you?" Someone yelled.
'This is a good chance to let everyone know who I am, so I don't have to repeat my name a hundred damn times.'
"I am John Gerscheson. I just moved into town, so most people won't know me."
"The council will be run by me the Chancellor while those on the council have the right to control different areas of the society we are creating. Council members will have the right to bring me ideas they might want to implement.
Under the Council members are the general officers who will lead individual departments. Currently, we have one general officer for Food Prep.
Tomorrow we will make a list of who is going to live in which home with other-
BANG!
"Ahhhh!"
A gunshot went off and everyone screamed while ducking down except for me who stood completely still.
Looking at who shot I saw Campbell and in no way was I surprised.
"Well, fuck this," Campbell said before taking a few steps closer to me.
"No one elected you king," Campbell said while waving his gun around.
"Anyone vote for him, anybody?" He said while looking at everyone.
'Trying to play into the hearts of the people but you don't know you fell directly into my trap.'
"I think you misunderstood me, uhm-"
"Campbell, my name is Campbell." He said calmly.
"You see only one council member can be voted in once every three months before the vote restarts again. As for the Chancellor, there is no vote. What I say goes." I said slowly.
"Oh, and why should anyone listen to y-
