Reborn in Jujutsu Kaisen as a Zenin

Chapter 7: Engagement

The morning sun had barely risen when Naobito's private study erupted with cursed energy – his son's crimson aura filling the room as he made his request.

"An engagement? With the Ten Shadows girl?"

Kisara knelt in the formal position beside Indra, her presence a silent testament to the proposition. The fresh medicine beside her sleeping mother's bed still lingered in her thoughts – the first fulfillment of their vow.

"Yes," Indra stated. "The technique should be developed properly, not wasted on whatever short-sighted plans the elders might devise."

Naobito set down his tea cup. "And you believe you can properly guide its development?"

"I believe having the Ten Shadows Technique aligned with our direct branch serves the clan better than letting it stagnate under restrictive traditions."

Naobito's cursed energy probed, analyzing, considering implications. "The elders won't accept this easily. They've already begun discussions about the girl's future use."

"The elders," Indra's voice took on an edge that made the air itself seem heavier, "will accept what power dictates. As they always have."

Naobito's attention shifted to Kisara. "Marriage is a significant commitment. You're both remarkably young to be considering such a path. What brings two children to decide their futures so definitively?"

"The Ten Shadows Technique responds strongly to Indra-sama's cursed energy," Kisara replied carefully. "Even in our limited interactions, the resonance is clear. Wouldn't it be better to secure such compatibility early, rather than risk less advantageous arrangements later?"

"And you, Indra?" Naobito turned to his son. "I didn't expect you to show interest in marriage arrangements so soon."

"Her technique intrigues me," Indra stated simply. "And as she said, the compatibility is evident. Why wait when an optimal match presents itself? The clan benefits more from a planned union than leaving such potential to chance."

Naobito studied them both for a long moment. "Young love disguised as political convenience? Or genuine strategic thinking from children who should be more concerned with their training?"

"Does the difference matter?" Indra countered. "The result benefits the clan either way."

Naobito leaned back slightly, his calculating gaze moving between them. "The clan's strongest inherited technique, binding itself to my second son through marriage. The elders will see this as quite presumptuous."

He paused, taking a deliberate sip of tea. "Though they might find it harder to object to a natural attraction between young sorcerers. Especially when one shows such... precocious interest in strengthening the bloodline."

"The engagement can be long," Indra added. "Allowing time for both of us to develop our techniques properly before any formal union."

"And your mother?" Naobito directed at Kisara. "She's been... unwell, I hear."

"Her condition requires proper medical care," Kisara responded, keeping her voice steady despite the sudden tightness in her chest.

"Care that would naturally be provided to the mother of your future daughter-in-law."

A subtle smile crossed Naobito's face. "Clever. Very clever. You both understand how to present your case in terms the clan can't easily dismiss."

He set down his cup with deliberate precision. "Very well. I'll announce my support for this engagement at tonight's clan gathering."

-------------------------------

The main hall of the Zenin compound hummed with cursed energy as clan members gathered for the evening announcement.

Naoya stood at his father's right hand, his perfect posture betraying none of the fury building within him.

"The Ten Shadows Technique," Naobito addressed the assembled clan, "has always been the pride of our bloodline. Its appearance in young Kisara, while unexpected, presents an opportunity we would be foolish to waste."

Naoya's fingers twitched imperceptibly as his father continued.

"My second son, Indra, has expressed his desire to form an engagement with her.

Their cursed energy shows remarkable compatibility, and both display wisdom beyond their years in seeking to strengthen our bloodline."

The gathered elders shifted uncomfortably, but none dared interrupt. Naoya's cursed energy pulsed with carefully contained rage.

First his brother's monstrous technique, then his growing reputation among other sorcerers, and now this – claiming the clan's most prestigious inherited technique through marriage.

It was him who should be engaged to the bearer of that cursed technique! He was already planning to present his case, yet Indra beat him to it!

"The engagement will be formalized immediately," Naobito declared, "though the marriage itself will wait until both have reached appropriate age and mastery of their techniques."

Naoya watched as his half-brother stood perfectly composed, that irritating air of protection of his technique maintained at just the right level to remind everyone of his power without being overtly threatening.

Beside him, the girl – who should have been nothing more than a useful tool for the clan – now stood as his future bride.

The implications were clear to everyone present. Indra hadn't just secured a powerful technique for his future line – he'd demonstrated his ability to reshape clan politics according to his will, even at such a young age.

"Such a decision requires elder council approval," one of the senior members finally spoke, his weathered voice carrying forced calm. "The Ten Shadows Technique's future cannot be decided so... hastily."

"The decision is made," Naobito responded flatly. "Unless you wish to challenge my authority in this matter?"

The elder's cursed energy flickered with frustration, but he remained silent.

Everyone present understood the underlying message – this wasn't just about an engagement, but a demonstration of where true power in the clan resided.

"Brother," Naoya's voice cut through the tension, each word precisely measured.

"Congratulations on your... fortunate arrangement. Though one wonders if someone so focused on becoming the strongest has time for marriage considerations."

"Strength takes many forms, brother. Not all of them require constant restless motion."

The subtle dig at his mastery over his Projection Sorcery made Naoya's cursed energy spike sharply before he forced it back under control.

Several of the younger clan members shifted uncomfortably, recognizing the dangerous undercurrent in this seemingly polite exchange.

"If there are no other objections," Naobito continued, deliberately ignoring the tension between his sons, "arrangements will be made to move Kisara and her mother to the main compound's medical wing. As befits their new status."

----------------------------

Later that evening, in Indra's private training ground, the two newly engaged children sat in formal seiza position.

The night air carried the lingering tension from the announcement, but here, away from watching eyes, they could speak freely.

"Your brother wasn't pleased," Kisara observed, keeping her voice low despite their privacy.

"Naoya's pleasure isn't our concern," Indra replied.

"What matters is that the arrangement is secured. Your mother will be moved to the medical wing tomorrow morning. The clan's best physicians have already been notified."

"And my training?"

"Will begin properly once your mother is settled. The Ten Shadows Technique requires specific conditions and environments for optimal development.

The elders have those records, and they'll provide them – however reluctantly."

Kisara absorbed this information, considering the subtle shift in her position that had occurred in just one day.

From a branch family burden to being officially engaged to the clan's most promising young sorcerer.

"The elders will try to interfere," she noted.

"Let them try if they dare." Indra's stated unbothered. "They'll then find out that just because I don't care to throw my weight around as much as Satoru, that it means not that they can stand up against my authority."

Kisara's eyes widened slightly at the casual mention of Satoru Gojo. "You know the Six Eyes user?"

"He visited officially for the first time six months ago - though I suppose it wasn't as public because of his audacity. Found my technique 'interesting' apparently." Indra's tone carried a hint of annoyance at the memory. "Though that's not important right now. We need to establish your new routine."

He turned to face her fully. "Your quarters will be next to my training ground. Close enough for protection, far enough to maintain proper appearance. You'll train here each morning, where I can observe your technique's development."

"And the Ten Shadows records, do you have an estimation of when exactly the elders will bring them after you 'convince'?" She uses the word loosely, since she already can imagine him making them submit to his strength - as he has done against many Grade 1 Sorcerers of the clan in open sparring.

"Will be delivered tomorrow." He answers. "Though remember – while this arrangement protects you, it also binds you. Your actions reflect on me now."

"I understand," Kisara responded, then hesitated before asking, "Though I'm curious about what you said regarding Satoru Gojo. What's he like?" She questioned.

She desired to know about the one who inherited the abilities stated to be the only true rival to the Ten Shadows.

"He's exactly as the rumors suggest – overwhelming power matched with overwhelming arrogance." A brief pause.

"Which reminds me. He'll likely return at some point, drawn by curiosity if nothing else. When he does, maintain distance. His attention brings complications we don't need right now."

He stood, signaling the end of their discussion. "The servants will show you to your new quarters. Your mother's treatment begins at dawn. For now, rest. Tomorrow marks the beginning of proper training with the Ten Shadows."

Kisara rose as well, understanding dismissal when she heard it.

This was, after all, what she'd chosen – protection and opportunity, in exchange for absolute loyalty to someone who viewed even the Six Eyes user as merely an inconvenience to be managed.

As Kisara followed the servant toward her new quarters, she caught glimpses of other clan members watching from shadows and corners.

Their cursed energy carried mixtures of resentment, calculation, and forced respect. In one day, she'd gone from being a problematic anomaly to being engaged to the clan's most feared.

The quarters themselves reflected her elevated status – no longer the cramped rooms at the compound's edge, but a proper suite near Indra's training ground.

Her few belongings had already been moved, arranged with careful precision.

Through the wall, she could hear her mother's steady breathing in the adjacent room – already benefiting from the first rounds of proper medical care.

Whatever else came from this arrangement, that alone made it worthwhile.

A scroll lay on her desk – the Ten Shadows instruction manual, delivered faster than even Indra had predicted.

The elders weren't wasting time in showing their cooperation, however reluctant it might be.

As she prepared for sleep, Kisara reflected on the day's events. She'd approached Indra hoping to secure protection through a false engagement, only to end up bound by vow into eternal service.

Yet somehow, despite the absolute nature of her commitment, she felt freer than she had in years.

As her eyes grew heavy she decided to close them, for though she may not know him long, she already had a feeling he will be very much a strict master.
