Rebirth of the Last Days: Double Pets

Chapter 47 - Themed Supermarket

The supermarket was located near the high-rise district, a fair distance from the villa area. Along the way, they moved without stopping, with the ability users deploying their various powers while Hu Haotian led the way in his car, heading straight for the supermarket.

Since the supermarket hadn’t opened yet, all of its roll-up doors and glass doors were still closed. It seemed that locals had assumed the supermarket was empty, so its entrances were surprisingly intact and undamaged.

Liu Bing did a quick lap around and reported back that there was no accessible entry, and they would need to break in.

With that decided…

Hu Haotian picked a spot and began smashing at the door using his earth-based powers. Watching him so boldly break into his own supermarket, completely unbothered, the others also joined in on smashing the doors.

When the owner himself was not only on board but enthusiastically leading by example, any guilt they felt vanished completely.

Without further hesitation, they quickly broke through the door and squeezed inside through the half-opened entrance.

Since the supermarket hadn’t opened, the shelves were still empty. The group glanced around the spacious, vacant supermarket and instinctively gathered near a stone pillar, awaiting Hu Haotian’s next instructions.

Hu Haotian, though one of the supermarket owners, was actually unfamiliar with the store’s layout, so he suggested that they split into two smaller teams to search for the warehouse.

However, the supermarket was not laid out like a typical store, with neatly arranged aisles.

Instead, it had long, winding corridors and passageways that gave everyone a serious case of disorientation in this so-called “themed” supermarket.

“Damn it, I should’ve told them to just make it square! What’s the point of all these twists and turns—can’t even find the exit now,” Hu Haotian muttered as he followed his teammates up to the second floor.

The supermarket was enormous, with four levels: an underground parking lot, a customer service area and lobby on the first floor, and finally some shelves visible on the second floor.

“We’ll go over that way,” Pan Dawei directed, leading Bai Qi and the others up to the second floor as well.

Each of them carried a large hiking backpack to make it easier to gather supplies.

But the second floor was just as vast, with army-green walls, empty shelves, and—thankfully—no zombies in sight. However, there were also no goods.

“This place is huge,” Tian Hai remarked.

“And no zombies,” Liu Bing added.

“There are zombies here,” Tang Ruo said.

The others turned to look at her in surprise.

Tang Ruo pointed upstairs. “I hear footsteps coming from the floor above.”

In reality, Tang Ruo sensed the zombies with her mental abilities. There were likely staff dormitories upstairs, leading to a fairly high number of zombies—about twenty or so. It seemed that the doors were shut, so all the zombies remained on the third floor without coming down.

Pan Dawei said, “You’ve got potential, being able to hear the footsteps from upstairs. In that case, let’s go up and check it out.”

Liu Bing objected, “Brother Pan, I think the warehouse should be downstairs. Moving things down from the third floor would be a hassle. We should look down there.”

Pan Dawei responded, “We should have the courage to face challenges! We can’t just back down. For the sake of world peace and for our organization’s resources, we should head to the third floor.”

Liu Bing: “…”

‘I really need to study hard to learn how to argue back!’

In truth, twenty zombies weren’t much for their team to handle, so Bai Qi didn’t object and followed the others up to the third floor.

The space was clearly much smaller on the third floor. There were rows of doors, and it looked like there were quite a few rooms.

Pan Dawei looked around and said, “This should be the employee dormitory.”

Everyone nodded in agreement.

Pan Dawei continued, “Since this is the dormitory, there shouldn’t be any supplies here.”

Another round of nods.

“Since there are no supplies, let’s go ahead and lure the zombies out, clearing them out room by room,” Pan Dawei declared.

Everyone: “…”

Pan Dawei looked at the four of them and turned to Liu Bing, saying, “Even if there aren’t any supplies, with our skills, taking care of these zombies is no big deal. Since we’re already here, isn’t it worthwhile to do some good for society, clean up a few zombies? Young people shouldn’t only think about taking shortcuts…”

Such a noble statement left the four with no rebuttal, so they let Liu Bing open each door to lure out the zombies while Tian Hai struck with his lightning balls.

“Yes, yes, exactly like that—keep that S-shaped movement, very good, stay on it… come on, add a little more style, OK, OK, to the left, now left, good, then to the right, loop around and you can come back… keep it up…”

“Lightning balls, lightning balls, make them bigger, throw another, yes, just like that… one more…”

This strange scene unfolded once again.

At first, Bai Qi would throw a few ice blades to take down some zombies, but as he watched Pan Dawei calmly directing the other two, who moved skillfully under his guidance, he stopped using his powers. Instead, he joined Tang Ruo to search the dorm rooms for supplies.

Though they weren’t in immediate need of resources, Bai Qi—who had been a hunter for three years in his previous life—couldn’t quite shake his habit of looting supplies wherever he went.

The dorm rooms didn’t have much food, though they occasionally found a few bags of chips or packets of cookies. After combing through every room on the third floor, they managed to gather around twenty bowls of instant noodles, along with some chips, cookies, and drinks.

They placed these items in the hallway for Liu Bing to pack up.

Exhausted from following Pan Dawei’s orders, Liu Bing, who was sprawled on the floor, instantly perked up at the sight of the food. His back pain vanished, and he eagerly stood up to load everything into his bag.

Meanwhile, Bai Qi went around using his ice blade to dig out the crystal nuclei from the zombies.

Pan Dawei was also searching each dorm room, and his efforts weren’t in vain; he found several magazines—though they were duplicates of what he had picked up the day before.

Oh well, better than nothing—even if they’re expired duplicates, they’re relics from before the apocalypse and might even be considered antiques in the future!

By the time he emerged, Bai Qi and the others had already collected the crystal nuclei. With everyone having completed their tasks, it was time to head downstairs to search for the supermarket’s storeroom.

As the five of them descended, a voice from someone in the convoy rang out: “Over here, basement level! We found the storeroom!”

Everyone quickly headed toward the basement.

Once there, they found that the entrance to the storeroom resembled the door to a bunker.

“Brother Hu, I have to say, this Jingtai Investment project is really something. It’s just a supermarket, but it feels like something out of an underground warfare movie. And the storeroom door—it’s practically a military-grade defense door.”

Hu Haotian felt somewhat exasperated. When his assistant had originally brought him the plans, he thought the “submarine” themed design was innovative. He even praised it and suggested making it more intricate.

Now that he was actually navigating it, he realized just how foolish that decision had been.

“It looks like the storeroom is locked.”

“Then break it down!”

With the supermarket owner so righteously raiding his own store, everyone jumped in enthusiastically, unleashing their powers to smash the door.

Although the storeroom door had been designed to look like a bunker entrance, it hadn’t been constructed to that level of thickness or durability. Before long, they had managed to punch a large hole through it.
