Chapter 45 - Settle Down
Upon exiting the high-rise community, they saw the vehicles of Hu Haotian and the others returning three days later.
“Did they not find the military base?” Tian Hai asked curiously.
In fact, Tian Hai hoped that someone would live here with them; it would be better than feeling like the three of them were just wandering aimlessly.
Bai Qi was unsure as well.
However, Hu Haotian spotted Bai Qi from a distance and was waiting for him. When the three approached, he said dejectedly, “There’s no way to get into the city. I’ve thought of so many ways to circumvent it, but it didn’t work. Damn it, there are too many zombies.”
Moreover, after seeing the situation, some people in the convoy turned back, saying they were heading to the base in L City.
Tian Hai said, “Captain Hu, don’t you have a lot of grenades and guns?”
Hu Haotian replied awkwardly, “Those things are what I traded all my assets for earlier. The government has restrictions; how could I have an endless supply of these firearms? They’re just for escaping on the road.”
Bai Qi said, “Then let’s settle here for now. At least the safety of the houses is decent.”
Hu Haotian said, “We can only do it this way.”
The convoy had been traveling rough for four days, and upon returning, everyone collapsed into sleep, having no energy left to catch up with Bai Qi and the others.
That evening, after the three finished dinner,
Tang Ruo sat on the sofa chatting with Bai Qi. “There are so many people in A City. If the city is filled with zombies, wouldn’t the survivors be trapped inside as well?”
Bai Qi nodded, “However, the A City government reacted quite quickly; many people have already sought refuge with the military.”
“The military’s base is in the West District, but Hu Haotian and the others can’t even get into the West District. What will happen then? Will the military send people out to look for survivors?”
Bai Qi shook his head, “I don’t know, maybe they will. But given the current situation, the military is definitely preparing to preserve all means for their development.”
This implied that in order to preserve their strength, the military likely wouldn’t expend too much manpower to rescue ordinary residents trapped in their homes.
Tang Ruo felt a bit dazed.
Bai Qi continued, “Actually, you don’t need to worry about Hu Haotian and the others; the military will move here on their own.”
“What… the military is coming back here?” Tang Ruo sat up cross-legged.
“Yeah, so many people have sought refuge with the military. The West District was originally a military base, and it can’t accommodate that many people. Additionally, many houses here belonged to political figures and have a decent safety level. Plus, with the new district planning, the facilities are all in place. If they need to relocate their base, this is the best choice…”
Tang Ruo said, “So that’s how it is. Then Hu Haotian and the others can just wait here.”
Bai Qi replied, “That’s just my guess. If they don’t come, we can’t keep the convoy waiting indefinitely.”
Tang Ruo thought about it and agreed, so she stopped asking further questions.
She wasn’t familiar with this place, or even with the layout of the world, and she couldn’t just rely on her own fantasies to create a perfect ending where everyone is happy.
In such a world, she couldn’t afford to be overly sentimental for others every day.
After a night’s rest, the people in the convoy had somewhat recovered their spirits. Although it had only been a month since the apocalypse began, everyone had become accustomed to life and death and had even grown indifferent to their own survival.
Today, around the three villas, some members of the convoy could still be seen going out to stretch their legs, but their range of activity was quite limited. They only ventured to the entrance of the villa area; beyond that was the high-rise district, which was teeming with zombies. Occasionally, a zombie might wander into the villa area that they could deal with, but going deeper into the high-rise district without a group of supernatural beings was tantamount to seeking death.
After finishing breakfast, Tian Hai looked outside the window and saw people moving around. He felt that these once deserted neighborhoods were starting to regain some vitality. He opened the door and walked out.
At the entrance of Villa 5, Pan Dawei was chatting with a speed-type supernatural being from the convoy. When he saw Tian Hai coming out, he waved at him.
Tian Hai quickened his pace and walked over.
Pan Dawei said, “Young man, the convoy has treated you well. Do you have any ambition to repay the organization and contribute to it?”
Tian Hai glanced at the speed-type supernatural being next to him, who was shivering, and nodded, “Yeah, I do.”
Pan Dawei didn’t hesitate at all, “In that case, I have a task for you.”
Tian Hai asked, “What task?”
Pan Dawei was quite pleased with his obedient reaction.
He pointed to the community entertainment center, which was only one floor high, and said, “Look, there are over twenty zombies there. Liu Bing will go in to draw them out, and then you can take care of them from behind.”
Tian Hai responded with an “Oh,” indicating his acceptance.
The speed-type supernatural being Liu Bing looked at Pan Dawei and said, “You said that after drawing this wave, you’d give me ten packs of instant noodles.”
“Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered…” As he spoke, he pushed Liu Bing out.
The entertainment center was built between the villa area and the high-rise district, allowing people from both sides to come here for leisure and entertainment. There were hardly any residents in the villa area, but there were quite a few in the high-rise district, so there were indeed many zombies inside the center.
Liu Bing ran around inside for a while and then brought out a whole horde of zombies, which was far more than the “twenty or so” mentioned by Pan Dawei.
“Damn you, old Pan! You’re old, so I’ll let that slide, but how can you be so dishonest? You said there were only twenty or so here? I haven’t even cleared the place yet, and look at this wave…” Liu Bing cursed while running, dragging a long line of zombies toward the space between Pan Dawei and Tian Hai.
A horde of zombies trailed behind him, shuffling along, dense and numerous. In this situation, there was even a hint of humor to it.
Pan Dawei threw out a few seeds.
He was a wood-type supernatural being, and without seeds or trees, he found it inconvenient to use his powers. However, after awakening his powers, he had collected a large number of seeds. So at this moment, he immediately threw out seeds, causing tree vines to grow ahead and creating a barrier between himself and the zombies.
“Liu Bing, lead the zombies down another path, or they’ll all come our way…”
“Quick, quick, Tian Hai, use your thunder balls! The organization trusts you, don’t let them down…”
Tian Hai looked at the dozens of zombies over there, filled with fighting spirit. He stretched out his hand and threw out two large thunder balls, instantly killing five zombies that were separated by the tree vines.
“Keep it up…” Pan Dawei continued to throw his seeds while directing Tian Hai to throw thunder balls, “Here… yes, yes, there’s a wave here… yes, yes, over there, there’s another wave…”
Later on…
Since the zombies in front of the tree vines had been cleared out, Pan Dawei reduced the number of seeds he was throwing.
“Yes, just like that, keep going, thunder balls, keep going…”
Later still…
Pan Dawei stopped throwing seeds altogether.
“Liu Bing, move a bit closer! The zombies are all trailing behind you! Damn it, can’t you do an S-curve? Have you ever played LOL? Can you do a flashy S-curve or not?”
“Keep it up! Tian Hai, go for it… Yes, yes, that’s how you throw the thunder balls! So cool, kid, you have a bright future ahead…”
This strange scene of an old man directing a young one to fight zombies unfolded for the whole morning.
