Rebirth of the Last Days: Double Pets

Chapter 42 - Seeking Warmth

Tang Ruo sat on the sofa in the living room, brought there by a rather grumpy someone, staring up at Bai Qi with her wide eyes.

In those dark eyes of his, she could see her own reflection.

Right now, all he saw was her.

That made Bai Qi feel a bit better.

“What are we discussing?” Tang Ruo casually picked up a strawberry and popped it into Bai Qi’s mouth.

The strawberry moistened his mouth and even seemed to soften his heart a little.

The sourness he felt vanished instantly.

He gently touched the clip in Tang Ruo’s hair and said, “In a few days, we’ll go somewhere.”

Tang Ruo didn’t ask where, only nodded. “Okay.” Then, lifting her head, she asked, “What would you like for dinner? I’ll make it.”

Bai Qi took her hand and said, “No need. Let Tian Hai handle it.” Then he explained why he wanted to take her out. “You’re close to leveling up your ability, so you need to go out. Besides, judging by how the others in the convoy look, they probably won’t stay here much longer.”

Only then did Tang Ruo remember. “Oh, so you’re saying we’ll keep moving with them?”

Was this big house about to be abandoned again?

Bai Qi shook his head. “No, we’ll stay here.”

Tang Ruo nodded, satisfied.

She’d only been living as a “rich woman” for a day, and she hadn’t enjoyed it enough yet.

Time always seems to fly for people in love; whether they’re chatting or just sitting quietly leaning against each other, they can experience a special sense of tranquility, as if they were in a “heart-pounding yet calm” state of bliss.

The two had just officially entered into a relationship. One was a bookish type with zero emotional intelligence, while the other was a hospital friend whose emotional intelligence was even lower. As expected, their dating skills were as awkward as those of elementary school students.

A young love so tender, like a splendid dream, pure and sincere.

In this life, they were destined to meet—a beautiful couple, blossoming together.

After chatting for a bit, Tian Hai called them for dinner; he’d prepared the best meal they’d had in days. For a while now, they’d avoided cooking big meals to keep a low profile, so having a table full of hot dishes felt like a luxury.

After dinner, it was time to sleep. There was a master bedroom on the third floor and two guest rooms on the second floor.

With three rooms available, Tang Ruo certainly didn’t have the confidence—or audacity—to sneak into Bai Qi’s arms for the night, so they each took a room.

However, Bai Qi was not about to let Tang Ruo and Tian Hai both sleep on the second floor. Thus, the arrangement was that Tang Ruo took the master bedroom, while Bai Qi and Tian Hai each took a guest room.

That night, Tang Ruo encountered a serious issue. Without Bai Qi beside her, she somehow managed to roll straight out of bed and onto the floor!

After rolling off three times, she gave up and pulled a mattress from her space inventory, laying it on the floor in the corner.

‘I can’t believe this… What kind of sleeping habits did my past life self have that I roll off the bed three times in one night?’

‘I really must be destined to be down-to-earth—living in a luxury villa yet still ending up sleeping on the floor!’

The next morning, Tang Ruo came downstairs sore and achy.

Tian Hai was in the kitchen preparing breakfast and, noticing her tired expression, asked, “Sis, didn’t you sleep well last night?”

Tang Ruo felt a bit awkward. “Yeah, this house is way too extravagant; I’m not used to it…”

Just then, Bai Qi came downstairs and noticed her rubbing her arm. He walked over, gently pulled up her sleeve, and frowned. “Why is it all bruised?”

Tang Ruo looked up at him with a pitiful expression.

‘Should I tell him that I fell off the bed three times? Big Brother Bai Yan… can I request a bed warmer?’

Bai Qi looked into her beautiful, watery eyes, full of a helpless glimmer. Feeling bad, he gently massaged her arm. “You rolled off the bed last night?”

Tang Ruo: “…”

‘Ouch. Right to the point.’

It wasn’t intentional! How could she have known that her body would roll right off a mattress? The second half of the night was even worse—she rolled right into the empty swimming pool in the room.

Waking up in a dry pool was not a fun way to start the day.

“How do you even sleep that way? This bed’s huge, yet you still manage to roll off.”

Since it was originally set up as a wedding suite, the master bed was indeed quite large.

But it turns out her “rolling sleeper” reputation was no exaggeration.

After breakfast, Bai Qi applied some herbal oil on Tang Ruo’s bruises.

Thanks to her recent habit of soaking in her special space’s water, Tang Ruo’s skin was now noticeably fairer, making the bruises stand out even more.

Bai Qi’s gentle touch made her feel warm and fuzzy inside. She suggested, “Maybe next time, we can put some guardrails around the bed so I don’t fall.”

“Mm, or we could just get a crib for you to sleep in next time.”

Tang Ruo: “…”

Just moments ago, she thought he was gentle—what an illusion!

Before long, Hu Haotian arrived.

With his wealth of experience, he glanced around at the luxurious decor of Bai Qi’s villa and simply clicked his tongue, saying, “Even more luxurious than my place.” Then, he got straight to business.

The gist of it was that on the third day of the apocalypse, his father had called him with news that a temporary base had been set up near the western district of City A. Hu Haotian planned to head toward the western district to join the temporary base there and was asking if Bai Qi and his group would go to seek military protection as well.

As for the other people in the convoy, they had come to City A mainly to search for their loved ones. Whether they succeeded or not, they needed answers. City A had responded relatively quickly by establishing a base on the second day of the apocalypse, allowing residents to seek refuge there. In phone calls with their families, the convoy members learned that their relatives had already gone to seek shelter at the military base, which, while still concerning, gave everyone some confidence in the strength of the nation. They believed their loved ones were relatively safe for now.

Bai Qi shook his head, explaining that the three of them didn’t have family in that area and intended to stay here for the time being.

Even if, in this lifetime, the military didn’t establish a base here, the villa’s sturdy construction would hold up against zombies until they evolved to level four, so they would be safe for a while.

Hu Haotian didn’t push further and, after saying goodbye to Bai Qi, left with those intending to join the military or head to the base in City A, heading toward the western district.

Once the convoy left, Bai Qi took Tang Ruo and Tian Hai out of the villa area and headed to the high-rise district ahead to clear out zombies.

They didn’t have anywhere else to go, and they already had enough supplies to last the three of them. Now, their main priority was naturally to strengthen their own abilities.
