Chapter 40 - Zero Emotional Intelligence
After yesterday’s ripple effect, Tang Ruo had lost her usual boldness and carefree attitude toward Bai Qi.
Not only had she shed this carefree demeanor, but even her gaze toward him carried a hint of shyness. When she caught Bai Qi looking at her, she would turn her head away and pretend to look out the window.
Bai Qi noticed something was off. Casually, he pulled Tang Ruo over, gripping her hand in his: “I saw you secretly watching me.”
Tang Ruo: “…”
What happened to the sweet, romantic atmosphere?
Aren’t they supposed to exchange flirtatious glances?
Where did your emotional intelligence go? Is it inversely proportional to your IQ?
Bai Qi said, “I’m sitting right here. If you want to look, just look; there’s no need to be sneaky.”
Tang Ruo: “…”
She was certain that Bai Qi had no emotional intelligence.
In that case, Tang Ruo decided to embrace her fearless spirit, boldly declaring, “Is it not allowed for me to look at my fiancé?”
Her utterly ridiculous expression made Bai Qi laugh.
Unfortunately, there were others in the front seat; otherwise, he would have devoured her on the spot.
After all, it’s his.
Bai Qi was truly satisfied with the phrase “his.”
Tang Ruo felt Bai Qi’s fingers gently tracing the ring on her hand as he held it.
He lifted her hand to his lips and pressed a kiss on it, looking at her intently: “Hmm, that’s fine. Since you’re my fiancée, you should be able to look at me openly.”
In an instant, as she met his earnest, heart-stirring gaze, her heart skipped a beat, and she felt warmth flooding her chest.
However, under such circumstances, Tang Ruo didn’t know how to respond, so she simply pouted and made a face at him.
Alright, she had never been in a relationship, and her emotional intelligence was also a zero!
In the front seat, Tian Hai was in tears.
Although my presence is relatively low, am I really being ignored like this? The two of them are so sweet together…
In this apocalyptic world, even being a driver is agonizing!
After the zombie battle, the group really didn’t feel like stopping. They had breakfast and lunch in the car. However, they still took a short break along the way; otherwise, encountering another horde of zombies would be too costly.
As they passed a fork in the road, the convoy stopped to rest.
Bai Qi opened the map and studied it before saying to Tian Hai, “We’ll get off the highway here.”
He was headed to the future reconstruction base in City A. Although he wasn’t sure if the military was still there, his house had indeed been in this new area before the apocalypse.
Tian Hai looked in the direction Bai Qi was pointing and said, “Brother Bai, but it seems like they’re planning to move forward.”
Bai Qi replied, “Let them go; we’ll get off the highway ourselves.”
Tian Hai nodded.
Then, Bai Qi got out of the car to say goodbye to Hu Haotian.
“You’re going to the new planned area in the southern suburbs?” Hu Haotian frowned upon hearing this.
They were all supposed to be looking for relatives in the military, but the military base was located in the western district.
Bai Qi nodded. “I still have an apartment in ‘Huangting,’ so I have a place to stay there. That area is newly planned, and there should be fewer zombies, so it would be safer to spend the night there.”
“That makes sense. It really isn’t safe to stay on the road at night anymore,” Hu Haotian said, looking at the road leading to City A. After thinking for a moment, he added, “Actually, our company also has shares in ‘Huangting,’ and we still have several apartments registered under our company’s name. If we all go there, we could actually find a place to stay.”
Bai Qi raised an eyebrow.
“We could also continue to head to Huangting together,” Hu Haotian suggested.
Bai Qi remained noncommittal.
In any case, he was only going to the new planned area in the southern suburbs.
After calculating the distance from their current location to Huangting, Hu Haotian concluded that it would take about an hour to arrive. He quickly gathered everyone and said, “Everyone, we’re now within the range of City A, but we still don’t know what the situation is like in the city. As you all saw from last night’s events, it’s not safe to camp outside, so we plan to head to the newly planned southern district of City A to find a place to settle down. What does everyone think?”
Having a place to settle was naturally agreeable to everyone. The supplies on the vehicle could last about half a month, and the daily journey had left everyone exhausted.
Thus, they all decided to go to Huangting to rest and regroup.
The convoy, made up of more than ten vehicles, navigated various obstacles along the way, and they arrived at Huangting Villa in the southern district of City A by three in the afternoon.
However, when Bai Qi saw the state of the place, he couldn’t help but feel surprised.
There were no large military forces stationed here, nor were there high walls; everything still looked pristine and untouched.
Could it be that they arrived too early and the military hadn’t come here yet?
Huangting Villa was designed as a luxury area with the highest configuration before the apocalypse. Rows of three-story villas stood amidst vast green spaces, making Tang Ruo and Tian Hai stare in awe.
She incredulously asked Bai Qi, “You have a, a house here?”
Not just a house, but an entire villa with a huge garden!
Using the word “house” to describe it was simply a blatant display of wealth!
Tian Hai stammered a bit, “W-we… are we going to live here in the future?” This place was even bigger than the concrete house they had back in their countryside, which only had a couple of acres of land. He had only ever seen such a house on TV, thinking that the neighborhood where his dad used to live was already the top tier.
Bai Qi didn’t mind and continued to observe the surroundings as he spoke, “There won’t be so much space for you to live in later. The government will allow earth-type abilities to construct many houses between the existing ones.”
The base was that large, but the number of people seeking refuge would keep increasing. Even if the government continued to expand outward, it wouldn’t be fast enough to accommodate every newcomer, which is why they would later allow abilities users to build temporary living spaces here.
Despite such “illegal buildings,” the villa area was still much safer than outside. The tall buildings outside could accommodate people, but the shantytowns on the outskirts could only be considered slums, chaotic and dirty, with anything imaginable occurring inside.
Hu Haotian’s vehicle led the way toward the monitoring room of the villa area. Within the community, there was no sign of security personnel, and the villa area didn’t seem to have as many zombies as the high-rise residential areas they had encountered earlier. Once they entered Huangting Villa, there were hardly any signs of zombies or people, indicating that very few had settled here when the apocalypse began.
A group of people inexplicably followed Hu Haotian into the administrative office on the upper floor of the monitoring room.
Hu Haotian explained to everyone, “When they built this place, the goal was to create the top configuration in China. Therefore, everything here is fingerprint-locked; even guns can’t break the locks. So, I had to bring everyone here to select a few houses without owners and register your fingerprints.”
Now that such a large villa was essentially given away for free, everyone was still quite happy, even though it wouldn’t be of much use in the future. However, facing such a big house, everyone felt a bit uneasy.
In the past, living in such a large house was a luxury, but now, lacking the ability to protect themselves, living in such a big place felt like asking for trouble. If they encountered a zombie or something similar, it would be like calling for help but having no one respond!
Previously, they at least had good neighbors who could lend a hand. Now, if they shouted outside with a loudspeaker, the people across the street probably wouldn’t hear them. So, aside from Bai Qi and the others, including Hu Haotian, who owned a property here, everyone else just took one set of rooms to move in. After all, the house was so big with so many rooms that two people could share one and still have enough space to sleep comfortably.
Hu Haotian knew where the backup batteries for the administrative building were located.
After opening the backup batteries and inputting everyone’s fingerprints, everything was settled.
With the housing issue resolved, everyone left in high spirits, each returning to their “home.”
