Chapter 32 - Overnight at the Supermarket
After that, they went to City A as planned.
Tian Hai had nowhere else to go, so he naturally followed the two of them. He was afraid Bai Qi would dislike him and leave him behind, so he worked hard every time to kill zombies and protect Tang Ruo.
After retrieving the off-road vehicle from their old place, the three of them took some secluded alleys and left City H.
There were still quite a few zombies in the city, but fortunately, Tang Ruo’s psychic abilities had recently increased significantly. She could envelop the entire vehicle in a layer of psychic energy. Bai Qi and Tian Hai’s abilities were also strong, so the three of them driving through the secluded alleys posed no major problems.
If they had driven on the main streets crowded with zombies, the three of them in one car would probably have ended up being eaten alive by the zombies.
Occasionally, they would see zombies dressed in military uniforms, carrying guns on their shoulders, wandering aimlessly like walking corpses on the streets.
Due to the high number of zombies, Bai Qi had to give up on taking any guns.
Once they left the densely populated areas of the city, the number of zombies decreased noticeably.
Due to these past few days of high-intensity training and scavenging, they were already worn out from constantly fighting zombies. When a zombie occasionally wandered onto the road, Bai Qi would just drive straight over it, crushing it beneath the car.
Lower-level zombies had not yet evolved and had relatively weak shells. A direct hit could crush them to death.
In dangerous situations, if a normal human were on the road, their companions would gather around them, using them as the leader.
As a result, Bai Qi’s off-road vehicle led the way on the road, and cars from who-knows-where started following behind.
Initially, people felt that having more people provided more security, but later on, they realized that having a larger group felt even safer. Thus, all the vehicles started lining up behind Bai Qi’s car, one after another, creating a long train-like procession on the road.
Tang Ruo, having used her psychic energy to envelop the car in the morning, overextended her ability usage. She absorbed two crystal nuclei and drank some space spring water before lying down in the front passenger seat to rest.
After the two of them realized last night that the space spring water enhanced their abilities, they stopped drinking mineral water and switched to drinking space spring water directly.
When Tang Ruo woke up and saw the long convoy behind them, she was startled: “When did we get so many people following us? Who are they?”
Bai Qi glanced in the rearview mirror, unconcerned. In desperate times, people become selfish—he had seen this all too clearly in his previous life.
He patted Tang Ruo’s hand and said, “They’re afraid of the unknown dangers ahead, so they’re letting us scout the way for them.”
The usually quiet Tian Hai added, “If that’s the case, then they’re being really sneaky.”
Bai Qi continued driving along the route marked on the map, and by evening, they pulled into a gas station. Although it was only a little after 3 p.m., it would get dark around 4 p.m. in this post-apocalyptic world, and it wasn’t safe to travel in the dark.
There were zombies in gas station attendant uniforms wandering around. Bai Qi glanced at the cars behind them through the rearview mirror, got out of the car, and used his ice abilities to take down a few zombies. Seeing Bai Qi do this, Tian Hai also got out and used his lightning balls to kill a few more. Tang Ruo, meanwhile, secretly wrapped the two of them in a layer of psychic energy to prevent zombies from touching them.
Seeing that there were people with abilities in the front car, a few hot-blooded individuals from the cars behind didn’t hesitate either. They got out of their cars and used fireballs and ice shards to help deal with the gas station zombies…
A few minutes later, Bai Qi drove the car up and started refueling.
Soon after, the cars behind them also drove up, grabbed fuel hoses, and began to refuel. Many of the cars had been driving all day, and in their rush, had emptied their fuel tanks.
After filling up, Bai Qi took a look at the small convenience store next to the gas station.
The convenience store was a mess, with shelves toppled over, clearly having been looted multiple times. However, since it was still early in the apocalypse, there were still quite a few things inside, and there were also a few zombies trapped behind the glass doors.
The people who had just helped kill the zombies saw the zombies inside the glass doors. Without saying a word, they unleashed a barrage of abilities on the glass, smashing the door and slicing up the zombies inside like watermelons.
Afterward, when people saw that the zombies were gone and that there was food inside the store, they all gathered around…
Bai Qi watched this unfold and didn’t say much. He just walked over to the car and said to Tang Ruo, “Are you tired? If you are, we can stay here for the night…”
Tang Ruo was about to say something when the sounds of fighting broke out nearby. Due to disputes over gasoline and supermarket goods, fights broke out among the people from the various cars.
Food is essential for survival. This scramble for resources caused many people to start fighting. When some of them realized that the people driving in front didn’t know each other, the fights became even fiercer, with some even drawing blood.
“Put it down! This is our stuff!”
“Who the hell said it’s yours?”
“The zombies inside were killed by our ability users!”
“Everyone gets a share. You were just faster and got the zombies first. We helped too!”
…
“Damn it, you guys took all the gas! What are we supposed to use now?”
“Who told you to follow behind us? First come, first served. If there’s no gas left, that’s just bad luck for you!”
“What did you just say? Say that again if you dare!”
With so many people fighting, killing, and making a commotion, Tang Ruo looked at the chaotic scene behind them and said to Bai Qi, “I’m not tired. Let’s find somewhere else to stay for the night…” Tang Ruo remembered from the map that there was a service area not far from here. Staying here would only lead to more fights.
Bai Qi nodded, “Alright, let’s go somewhere else.”
The three of them then continued driving along the highway to a nearby service area.
Bai Qi chose a service area close to the gas station to stop at. It was now almost 4 p.m., and it was getting completely dark. They definitely couldn’t keep driving on the road.
After parking the car, Bai Qi was momentarily blinded by the headlights of another car behind them. He then realized that other vehicles had followed them out of the commotion. Seeing these vehicles stop as well, Bai Qi remained seated in the driver’s seat, waiting to see what these people intended to do.
Sure enough, the cars behind stopped right next to Bai Qi’s. The window of the leading car rolled down, and a middle-aged man poked his head out, “Hey there, young man… Are you planning to stay here overnight?”
Bai Qi gave a short “Mhm.”
“We’re also planning to stay here overnight,” the man continued, “but there are quite a few zombies around here, and it’s getting dark outside. We saw you guys were pretty skilled earlier, and we were wondering if you’d help us clear out the zombies here… Would that be alright?”
Bai Qi, still with his stoic expression, scanned them briefly and noticed women and children in the back seats of their cars. “No problem,” he replied.
Zhao Zhiqiang then gathered all the people with abilities. Including Bai Qi and Tian Hai, there were only five people in total. Two had strength-type abilities, one had wind-type, Bai Qi had ice-type, and Tian Hai had lightning-type.
“We should be okay if we’re careful,” Zhao Zhiqiang said as he took out flashlights and handed one to each person. Fortunately, this service area wasn’t very big, with only a convenience store and a restroom.
As they swept through the area, they encountered only about twenty zombies.
Then, the group parked their cars at the entrance of the convenience store and decided to spend the night inside.
