Chapter 31 - Strawberries
Tang Ruo didn’t want the conversation to stall, so she brought up another topic: “Lately, I’ve felt that my mental power has grown a lot. Before, when I wrapped it around the three of us, it would start to feel a bit empty after half an hour. Now, even after an hour, I don’t feel like my power is depleted…”
Bai Qi had also noticed improvements in his abilities. He could now condense ice crystals into spheres, and his dual-kill ability had improved from killing four zombies to five with a single strike.
“We’ve only absorbed about a hundred crystal nuclei each over the past few days. It shouldn’t be enough to level up so quickly. This situation does seem unusual…”
In his past life, it had taken nearly seven months for him to advance to the second level, and his current abilities were already much stronger than his second-level abilities from before. If he were to level up further, it might surpass his previous third-level abilities.
“Hmm, well, it’s good that we’re making progress. After all, the greater the power, the more secure we are,” Tang Ruo said, pulling out a plate of strawberries from her space. Before she even had a chance to eat one herself, she popped one into Bai Qi’s mouth.
The instant it touched his tongue, it was sweet and soothing.
Eating sweets before bed isn’t a good habit, but Bai Qi knew that Tang Ruo paid a lot of attention to health and wellness. She must have only brought them out now because of the long day with Tian Hai. He took the plate and said, “It’s time to sleep, so you shouldn’t eat too many.”
Tang Ruo nodded and asked, “Is it good?”
“Mm, very sweet.”
Tang Ruo took a strawberry and bit into it. “Yes, the strawberries grown in the space are indeed very sweet.”
Bai Qi was somewhat stunned. Looking at the plate of strawberries, which were much larger and juicier than he remembered, he asked, “Wasn’t it only planted for about ten days? How did it ripen so quickly?”
Tang Ruo nodded and took another bite. “Yes, when it was transplanted, it already started to flower, and by yesterday, they were all ripe. Not just strawberries—mangoes and tomatoes seem to be ripening too. We’ll have plenty of fruit in the future.”
Her space also contained some vegetables, which could be harvested for later use.
Bai Qi marveled at how convenient space abilities were.
Seeing Tang Ruo happily eating another strawberry, he suddenly thought of the stream in her space and said, “Maybe the reason our abilities have improved is thanks to the stream in your space.”
It wasn’t surprising that Bai Qi had only now come up with this idea. He wasn’t familiar with sci-fi elements in novels.
Before the apocalypse, Bai Qi had been a diligent student, focusing solely on academics and physical training. He had limited exposure to the fantastical elements found in novels and TV shows.
Much of what he knew came from stories told after the apocalypse began.
Tang Ruo was in a similar situation. Her mother, seeking more child support, had signed her up for numerous classes in her name, so Tang Ruo had mostly been going to school, spending time with her grandmother, and attending extracurriculars. She had not encountered such fantastical scenarios either.
“You’re saying that the stream in my space has improved our abilities?” She was still skeptical.
Bai Qi speculated, “Every time after a bath, the water is a bit dark. It’s more likely to cleanse internal impurities and improve abilities rather than just be a beauty product. Besides, if the stream didn’t have any spiritual quality, it probably wouldn’t have produced such large strawberries.”
Tang Ruo looked at the strawberries in her hand and began to believe it. “So my space ability is actually that powerful.”
Bai Qi didn’t believe this was Tang Ruo’s space ability. In the three years of the apocalypse, he had never heard of anyone with dual attributes. Besides, Tang Ruo’s “ability” had awakened before she had a fever, suggesting it wasn’t an ability.
So Bai Qi asked if there were any unusual features before discovering this space.
Tang Ruo thought for a moment and explained how she had broken a piece of jade, which led to a plant-like tattoo on her hand.
She didn’t explicitly say she had traveled through time, only that it happened after she woke up.
“It was just imprinted on my hand, and it never caused any pain or itching. I had completely forgotten about it,” she said.
Having explained, she also understood some things.
“So you mean, my ability isn’t actually a space ability but related to that jade pendant?”
Bai Qi was somewhat relieved by her quick understanding.
He took Tang Ruo’s hand again, examined it carefully, and said, “It’s probably related to that jade pendant. But right now, we’re just guessing. As long as it doesn’t harm you, it’s fine.”
Tang Ruo promptly took out all the jade pieces from her space and laid them on the bed.
Bai Qi looked at her with some confusion.
Tang Ruo insisted that Bai Qi use his ice knife to cut through them.
Bai Qi chuckled, thinking that if such things were so easily obtained, the apocalypse wouldn’t have caused such panic.
Tang Ruo was adamant about checking all the jade pieces: “Otherwise, having so many pieces of jade would be pointless.”
Bai Qi thought about it and agreed with Tang Ruo’s reasoning. He had previously asked her to keep the jade pieces due to a rumor, and now, since Tang Ruo’s experience had confirmed the rumor’s validity, they might as well try to see.
He proceeded to cut through each piece of jade.
However, they were all ordinary pieces of jade, with no unusual features. No metal fragments were found.
Tang Ruo was very disappointed and said, “Our luck is too bad.”
Bai Qi patted her head and said, “Silly girl.”
Perhaps it took extraordinary luck to obtain the space within the jade, and having Tang Ruo with him was already a huge stroke of luck. There was no need to be greedy for another space.
As long as he had her, that was truly enough.
