Rebirth: Leading Families to Survive in the Apocalypse

Chapter 242: Current State of the Base

“Qiqi, that was splendid just now!”

Su Jin gave Mao Qiqi a thumbs up.

Lin Xiuyuan looked at the pair of cousins with a complex expression, recalling how Su Jin had previously killed those people in front of Dragon Leap Villa’s gate, tsk tsk, quite the fierce sister duo indeed.

Su Jin actually had some more questions she wanted to ask Mao Qiqi, such as why that woman was covering her head just now, but seeing as customers had already started coming into the shop to buy things, she didn’t ask any further, planning to inquire later that evening.

The best-selling items in the shop were still the thin pancakes made by Lin Yunguo. Although the price of the pancakes was still somewhat expensive, since there were dozens of them in a single serving, they were considered good value for the money.

Those who were currently able to afford such goods were those participating in base construction since they received Crystal Cores every day and didn’t have to pay for food and accommodation. They would even occasionally buy some beer and mutant animal meat to indulge their cravings.

This made those who had initially been unwilling to participate in base construction green with envy.

Now, they could only live in the shabby shantytown, and although the base cafeteria provided three meals a day, currently, they could only be obtained in exchange for Crystal Cores, and if you arrived late, there would be nothing left.

At the moment, Fang Jingfu and Deng Shuwei were still living together in the shantytown. Although the base was quite safe, both of them had hardly any Crystal Cores.

Deng Shuwei was slightly better off; on the way to the base, she had killed two zombies and obtained two Crystal Cores, but these Cores were only enough to exchange for two meals in the base cafeteria.

“What kind of lousy base is this, not even providing food and housing; might as well have stayed in the refuge,” Fang Jingfu complained, sitting on the bedding laid on the ground.

“Ah Fu, the refuge is already overrun with zombies, we have to rely on ourselves from now on,” Deng Shuwei handed Fang Jingfu a coarse grain bun that she had just exchanged for using Crystal Cores at the base cafeteria.

“Rely on ourselves? What can we do, go out and kill zombies? Impossible!” Fang Jingfu argued as she took the coarse grain bun. Zombies looked so disgusting; she would rather die than kill such creatures.

“But other people can do it,” Deng Shuwei began to tell Fang Jingfu about what she had seen in the base that day.

A wave of enthusiasm for practicing special abilities and physical fitness had now swept through the base. Those with special abilities were sparring with each other to hone their skills, and ordinary people without special abilities were training their physical fitness in the base.

And perhaps influenced by the family that had initially escorted them, among those who were training, there were both men and women, young and old.

“Now, the open space in front of the villa area has become a place for Special Ability Users to spar with each other,” Deng Shuwei said wistfully, planning to join everyone in training when the time came.

“Ah Fu, let’s go together when the time comes,” she suggested.

“I’m not going. I’m not a Special Ability User. Why go and inflate somebody else’s ego?” Fang Jingfu had never intended to go out and kill zombies, believing that one day the apocalypse would pass and human society would naturally revert to its former civilized state. So, what was the point of practicing to kill zombies now? Besides, she always felt that the Special Ability Users acted all high and mighty.

“In my opinion, you shouldn’t go either. Look at you, so petite and tiny, your special ability power surely isn’t that strong. What’s the point of going out to kill zombies? Let’s just find some clerical work in the base,” Fang Jingfu persuaded with feigned earnestness.

Deng Shuwei fell silent, no longer wanting to listen to Fang Jingfu’s persuasion. She had already missed out on the chance to participate in the base construction because of Fang Jingfu’s persuasion last time. While others kept moving forward, she remained stuck in place.

“Ah Fu, I am going. I also want to kill zombies,”

Deng Shuwei said with a determined look in her eyes.

After hearing this, Fang Jingfu paused the chewing of her steamed bun for a moment, showing a disappointed expression on her face, then pretended to be helpless and smiled, “Since it’s your own choice, Xiao Wei, I can only wish you smooth sailing.”

Wishing you would just die sooner.

“Mmm, thank you, Ah Fu!”

Deng Shuwei didn’t notice the flash of viciousness in Fang Jingfu’s eyes, at that moment she was filled with anticipation for this unfamiliar base.

These days, Shao Zian had also been helping out on the base walls from time to time. His Metal Element Ability had reached Level Two, and every day there were many Metal Element Ability Users who had exhausted their special ability power on the walls. This was when Shao Zian would enthusiastically go to offer his help.

He looked at Ying Yue, who was silently working, and felt that his current state was much better than when he had been in the refuge.

It seemed that Ying Yue’s mood must have somewhat improved during these days in the base, and he hoped that Ying Yue could gradually recover from that incident.

“Thank you very much for today,”

Captain Xiao Ziang said to Shao Zian. The two had been acquainted back in the refuge.

“Don’t mention it. It’s all for contributing to the base,” Shao Zian said with a smile, standing on the edge of the wall, looking into the distance.

To reinforce the walls, steel bars and frames were fixed into the stone bricks. Due to a shortage of ready-made steel bars, Liang Jiuhui had people collect some steel materials from nearby and transport them over. The job of the Metal Element Ability Users these days was to turn those steel materials into steel bars using their Metal Element.

“In a few more days, this wall should be completed,”

Captain Xiao Ziang watched the long, thick wall with joy in his heart. It would be relied upon to protect the thousands of people inside!

“Yes, you really are doing something great,” Shao Zian praised generously.

“No, no, no, you’re mistaken. This great task is not ours to do. It’s the decision of the Base Leader. We are just the ones chosen to carry it out. To live, we must do so, and it just so happens that I like this job,”

It was a job that gave a great sense of achievement to all participants.

“The Base Leader, huh… They really are amazing,” Shao Zian remarked.

Ever since the establishment of the base, many outsiders had arrived daily. He had heard from those people that the situation in other cities was a complete mess. Many places had become Dead Cities, and only here in S City was the base vigorously developing, presenting a scene of bustling activity.

The base was also preparing to start developing agriculture, open hospitals, water supply stations, and recruit official guard squads, among other things. When those recruitment notices were posted, they stirred up the entire base.

People living in shantytowns competed to sign up for interviews. They said they had missed the construction phase of the base and now was the beginning of its development. If they could pass the interview, it would be a “steady job.”

It was truly a picture of flourishing prosperity.

Shao Zian couldn’t help but smile.

It seemed that the decisions of those two people had always been right; he no longer needed to dwell on the past.

Thinking this, Shao Zian felt as if a huge weight had finally been lifted from his chest.

No resentment, no bitterness; he too wished to be a person striving to live on in the Apocalypse.
