Chapter 10: Departure
Before leaving, Anxia was still fast asleep.
Anjingtian hadn't woken up yet either, but he seemed to be in much better condition, and it wouldn't be long before he regained consciousness.
As expected, he'd be waking up soon.
Lin An dragged a few zombie corpses to cover the remaining scent of survivors at the door, then used random debris to barricade the entrance.
Only then did Lin An feel more at ease.
However, it seemed there were still survivors on the other side.
While Lin An was busy moving things, his sharp hearing picked up sounds from the neighboring room. Someone was carefully peeking through the peephole, thinking they had remained unnoticed.
Lin An didn't pay much attention at first.
But after confirming that someone was watching him, he casually picked up a zombie's head and squeezed it with one hand right in front of the peephole.
It burst like a water balloon, the skull shattering into pieces that scattered in all directions.
"Ah!" a scream came from the other side, clearly startled by Lin An's terrifying act.
Almost immediately, the sound of the door locking echoed from the other side.
Lin An smirked faintly. It seemed his tactic had worked.
A raw show of force.
Although the reinforced steel door was enough to keep out regular zombies, it wouldn't stop humans.
After the apocalypse, human nature became increasingly unpredictable.
In his previous life, Lin An had witnessed all kinds of ugliness.
People fought over food, turned on each other, and committed the most heinous acts in order to survive.
As long as he could keep Anxia and Anjingtian safe, he wouldn't hesitate to stain his hands with blood.
He had even considered wiping out every resident in the building.
But, not knowing whether anyone in the building knew the siblings, he refrained from doing so.
Still, as long as they avoided mutated creatures or malicious humans, Lin An wasn't concerned about regular zombies threatening the two siblings holed up in their apartment.
The food and water supplies inside were more than enough for a month.
As long as they stayed indoors, the zombies, relying only on their teeth, wouldn't be able to break through the reinforced steel door.
Even if something happened to Lin An, they could hold out for a while.
The supplies inside were all things Lin An had instructed Anjingtian to buy before the apocalypse.
A full range of military rations, enough for their survival.
Thinking about it, Lin An also recalled the massive stockpile of supplies he had purchased ahead of time.
Worth over two million in cash, it was enough to last the three of them for five years.
Weapons, equipment, medical supplies—everything they would need.
He just wasn't sure if the logistics delivery had reached the designated location while he was unconscious.
If that supply was still intact, he could easily establish a stronghold and raise a force just from these resources.
In the apocalypse, it's nearly impossible to survive alone.
The key to survival was building your own faction and securing a place in this new world.
Lin An sighed deeply.
Losing three days to unconsciousness had really thrown off a lot of his plans.
Not only that, but he still had many rare items and equipment left uncollected.
But it wasn't too late to go after them now.
At the Gate of He Yuan Community
Last night, Lin An had already mapped out his next steps.
The first six days were dedicated to finding special items and gear based on his past memories, killing a mutated creature to level up.
Without strength, no plan would work.
The following three days were reserved for hunting down the "Sutures."
But for now…
The first target: the Xingyi Flower Shop!
This flower shop, located on the outskirts of the city, had once housed a rare type of plant—"Psychoactive Flora."
These plants were akin to the enhancement items in a game.
Typically found in plant, fruit, or food form, most often plants.
After consuming them, players or even zombies would receive permanent stat boosts.
For players like Lin An, who could only gain +1 attribute per level, these "Psychoactive Foods" were game-changers.
Each stat boost was a massive leap in strength.
Those who got their hands on these fruits in the previous life became powerful individuals who dominated their territories.
However, such items were typically only available in the days leading up to the apocalypse and slowly disappeared after a month.
Lin An had learned about these from the "chat channel" in the game that opened up six months after the apocalypse started.
Unlike regular chat channels in games, this one consumed significant physical and mental energy—precious resources like food.
Most ordinary people, like Lin An in his previous life, couldn't even secure enough food to stay alive and simply had to silently watch as the awakened ones shared information.
In Lin An's memory, no one had posted anything about this in the public channel for an entire year after the outbreak.
So if he didn't take action now to grab these special plants, it would be nearly impossible to find them later.
Judgment Eye!
To survey the surroundings, Lin An activated his Judgment Eye, a golden flash briefly flashing in his pupils.
His vision sharpened, and streams of data flowed into his mind.
After confirming that there was no immediate danger, he deactivated the ability.
Although it didn't consume much mental energy, the continued use of Judgment Eye would eventually become a burden.
Nearby, there were no mutated creatures.
Zombies: 678
Survivors: 122
The once-thriving community with a population of over a thousand now had only about a tenth of its original inhabitants.
The cruelty of the apocalypse was evident.
Lin An's first goal now was to find a motorcycle.
The journey into the city was long, and although the zombie population here was lower than in the city center, it was still overwhelming.
Without a vehicle, dealing with zombies along the way would be a huge time sink.
Heavy trucks were hard to come by in the old district, and regular cars would break down after hitting a few zombies.
In contrast, a motorcycle was a much more viable option.
Later on, if conditions allowed, converting an armored car into a mobile stronghold would be ideal.
After a night's rest, Lin An could see that many zombies had gathered at the entrance of the community.
The ground was stained with dark red, a mixture of entrails and blood.
The zombies had devoured everything, leaving only white bones behind.
It seemed that many people had either tried to escape or enter the building last night.
Hundreds of zombies wandered aimlessly, occasionally letting out sharp, ear-piercing howls.
Lin An seized the opportunity and shot forward like a flash.
His target: a small group of zombies encircling a black motorcycle lying on the ground.
The key was still in the ignition.
A skeleton beside it had been stripped clean, the apparent former owner of the motorcycle.
Lin An's right foot pushed off hard, cracking the old pavement beneath him, propelling him forward to the front of the zombie horde.
He swung his curved knife in a downward arc, its sharp edge cutting through the air with a whistling sound.
The blade sliced through the nearest zombies like butter, their bodies split in half effortlessly.
"Raaagh!"
The remaining zombies, sensing the presence of a living human, went into a frenzy.
The rotting, decaying hands reached out toward Lin An.
With a swift sidekick, he changed direction mid-air, sending one zombie flying and snapping its spine with a brutal blow.
His body turned like a blur.
With a powerful swing, Lin An's knife made a full circle, and seven zombies' heads fell to the ground in one motion.
From a third-floor window, a young man with a scruffy beard watched in shock, his eyes wide with disbelief.
"What the hell...?"
He couldn't believe what he had just witnessed.
A blade technique as smooth as flowing water, and physical strength that was nothing short of inhuman.
Could this be some hidden master? A martial artist straight out of a legend?
The young man's name was Liu Shiming, and he had survived the outbreak by staying in his apartment, lucky enough to not be outside when the chaos began.
But now, after seeing Lin An's extraordinary skill, he was certain that this man could help him.
He rushed to open the window and yelled out, hoping to catch Lin An's attention.
"Hey! I'm Liu Shiming!"
"I live in Building 3, Unit 2, Apartment 302!"
