Quirkless Hero

Chapter 138: Chapter 138: Checkmate

"So, there really is something wrong..."

Nighteye, who had hurried back to his office, sensed that things with [Shie Hassaikai] weren't as simple as they seemed. Without wasting any time, he began investigating the matter.

Every hero agency has its own area of responsibility. For example, the [Pussycats], who handled the training camp, specialize in forest rescue missions.

As for [Nighteye's Agency], its work aligns with Nighteye's Quirk—gathering and analyzing intelligence on enemies, then sharing it with other heroes. His office computer had access to many networks for exchanging information.

Upon returning, Nighteye immediately searched for information on [Shie Hassaikai] and quickly found something significant.

Chisaki, the young boss of [Shie Hassaikai], had attended a secret gathering yesterday. It was a meeting of many of Japan's top underworld groups. While Nighteye could confirm the meeting had taken place, he couldn't find out what was discussed.

"Could it be?!"

Realizing that All Might and the police were currently heading to [Shie Hassaikai], Nighteye suddenly understood—it must be a trap set by those guys!

Inside the [Shie Hassaikai] mansion, All Might and the others had entered a large underground area that had been completely transformed into a maze-like structure.

The more All Might looked around, the more he felt like they were in the enemy's underground base. He couldn't help but demand:

"Chisaki, what are you up to here?"

"Of course not. Let's not forget, All Might, you're the strongest no.1 hero. And besides, we're a legitimate 'yakuza' organization—we're law-abiding citizens."

Chisaki shrugged as he explained, while the police officers behind him whispered to each other:

"A yakuza group calling themselves law-abiding citizens? That's a joke..."

"Yeah, he doesn't look like a good guy at all..."

......

Chisaki didn't care what the police thought. From the start, he had no intention of clashing with All Might. After all, the man who approached him had made a lot of sense.

After walking a bit further, Chisaki stopped in front of a large iron door. Without hesitation, he pushed it open.

"Here it is. This is the embarrassing operation I didn't want to talk about."

...

All Might gave Chisaki a silent look before stepping inside, followed closely by Togata Mirio and the police.

Inside, several people wearing white lab coats and bird masks like Chisaki's were working busily. Even with All Might and the others entering, they continued their work without a glance, as if nothing had happened.

All Might scanned the room briefly. Most of the equipment appeared to be medical devices, but it wasn't clear what the people were doing.

"Young boss of [Shie Hassaikai], care to explain what's going on here?"

"Of course."

In response to Officer Tsukauchi's question, Chisaki spread his hands and asked them in return:

"Do you know what Eri's Quirk is?"

"No, we don't..."

Officer Tsukauchi shook his head, explaining that even the police records were incomplete. He replied:

"There's only a note saying that when this child's Quirk first awakened, her father seemed to disappear because of it?"

"That's mostly correct."

Chisaki confirmed Officer Tsukauchi's statement, raising a finger as he continued slowly:

"You probably didn't know this—after Eri was adopted by the boss, one of his subordinates who was taking care of her vanished in the same way, completely gone without a trace."

"What!!?"

Chisaki's words left All Might and the others stunned. Could this child's Quirk really be that dangerous?

"Why didn't you notify the police or the heroes!?"

All Might questioned angrily, but Chisaki only stared at him with a bored expression:

"And what could you have done if we had? Would you have isolated Miss Eri or treated her as a threat to society?"

"I..."

All Might's words caught in his throat. Though he was the No. 1 hero, incredibly powerful, even heroes were only human, not gods. There were many things beyond his power.

"Miss Eri is the boss's granddaughter and the young lady of [Shie Hassaikai]. The subordinate who vanished was considered to have given his life in service to the organization, so we covered up the incident. But to prevent such events from happening again..."

"[Shie Hassaikai] had to take action. This place is where we're helping Miss Eri learn to control her Quirk. But you have to understand, she's only seven years old."

"A young child doesn't know the difference between right and wrong. Our efforts to help Miss Eri were seen as harming or abusing her, so she would often run away and claim we were doing bad things to her."

Chisaki's explanation left All Might and the police momentarily speechless. Was this guy telling the truth?

"In any case, you're free to investigate within the organization. You can question others to verify if what I'm saying is true or not."

Chisaki crossed his arms with an indifferent look, making things difficult for All Might and the police. Whether or not Chisaki was lying, they had lost a valid reason to act.

"All Might, leave the rest to us professionals."

"...Alright."

Officer Tsukauchi's words forced All Might to step back. From this point on, the investigation would have to be handled by experts.

Inside the mansion, Midoriya Izuku and Hado Nejire stayed with Eri, who obediently remained in Nejire's arms. Just then, All Might and the others emerged.

"All Might, how did it go?"

Midoriya quickly ran over to ask, but All Might only shook his head helplessly in response.

Ignoring Midoriya's surprised expression, All Might walked over to Hado Nejire, knelt down, and gently asked:

"Eri, could you tell me something?"

"Mm..."

Seeing that it was the hero she often saw on TV, Eri nodded obediently, without fear.

"After you came here... was there someone who touched you and then disappeared?"

All Might's question hit Eri like a needle piercing her heart. She recalled the terrible experience of a bad man using a syringe to draw her blood. The rough handling had caused her great pain. Just as she struggled and resisted, her body suddenly grew very hot, and then she heard the syringe fall to the ground... the man had vanished.

"Mm..."

Eri lowered her head, answering in a soft, sad voice. All Might covered his face with his hand, feeling overwhelmed. He still couldn't figure out what was really going on. What Chisaki said seemed to match what Eri had experienced.

They didn't know what [Shie Hassaikai] was truly up to, and they couldn't be sure if Chisaki was lying. But one thing was clear to All Might—this mission had failed.

Heroes and police had to follow the law. Without solid evidence of a crime, they couldn't take action against [Shie Hassaikai]. And worse...

In the shadows, an evil figure was quietly bringing together fallen yakuza groups that had been weakened by the heroes, waiting for the right moment to strike a heavy blow against hero society.
