Chapter 9: Chapter:9

Staring at the high-spirited Beedrill buzzing in front of him, Satoshi's mouth twitched.

"Damn!" he muttered.

"I should've realized that since I'm playing a different version, the hidden mission enemies would be tougher too."

He sighed but quickly composed himself.

"Luckily, I found this hidden mission early and got to it before anyone else. If I hadn't, this situation could've been much worse."

Satoshi was grateful for the information he'd read in his past life, posted by a "helpful" player who had completed this mission and shared its details. Without that knowledge, he wouldn't have realized the importance of getting to hidden missions early, especially in this α version, where failing could mean the mission disappearing forever.

"This really is luck, though. Or maybe it's the Favor of the World at work."

He shrugged off the thought. Whether it was luck or a blessing, it didn't matter. All that mattered was that he was reaping the benefits.

Satoshi shifted his focus back to the battle.

"Level 12? My Froakie can handle that. Plus, Beedrill's Bug/Poison typing makes it vulnerable to a move Froakie just learned. This is going to be a walk in the park," he thought confidently.

"You're not attacking? Fine, I'll make the first move! Beedrill, use [Twineedle]!"

"Hiss!"

At Cole's command, Beedrill buzzed forward, its Twineedle glowing with energy.

"Froakie, use [Quick Attack] to dodge, then counter with [Bubble]!"

"Quack!"

Froakie moved swiftly, using Quick Attack to leap to the side and evade Beedrill's attack. Once it was positioned, it opened its mouth and unleashed a flurry of Bubble, pelting Beedrill and slightly reducing its speed.

[Bubble: Attacks the target with bubbles, sometimes reducing the opponent's speed].

Beedrill reeled from the attack but didn't suffer significant damage.

"This is just the setup. Froakie, [Quick Attack] to close the gap, then use [Lick]!"

Cole quickly realized what Satoshi was planning.

"Don't let it get close! Beedrill, keep using [Twineedle] and force it back!"

Froakie darted toward Beedrill with Quick Attack, its tongue extending as it prepared to use Lick. At the same time, Beedrill thrust its glowing needles forward in a counterattack.

"Don't back down! Froakie, push through and use [Lick]!"

Both attacks connected, but thanks to Froakie's Protean ability, the tide quickly turned.

[Protean Effect: Froakie's type changed to Ghost after using Lick, reducing the effectiveness of Beedrill's Bug-type Twineedle to half damage].

Beedrill's stingers barely hurt Froakie, while Froakie's Lick inflicted heavy damage. To make matters worse for Beedrill, the attack left it paralyzed.

"Did the paralysis effect trigger? I've noticed my skill effects like this and the speed reduction from [Bubble] trigger more often than the probabilities suggest. Could this be the 'luck' from Favor of the World?"

Satoshi smirked.

"Since it's paralyzed, there's no need for a complex strategy. Froakie, keep using [Lick]!"

"Quack!"

Froakie eagerly obeyed, delivering one devastating Lick after another.

"Hiss~"

Beedrill's final cry sounded both pained and oddly relieved.

Satoshi, using the Power of the Evergreen, couldn't help but interpret it as: "Finally, the licking has stopped..."

"...Did Froakie just awaken some kind of strange habit in Beedrill?" Satoshi wondered, suppressing a shudder.

> "Ding! Froakie gained 140 experience points!"

"Ding! Froakie leveled up to Lv11!"

Cole, unfazed, released his second Pokémon: Butterfree, Level 13.

Satoshi had been expecting this.

"Butterfree might be trickier since it can use moves like [Poison Powder], [Stun Spore], and [Sleep Powder]. I'd rather not drag this out. Froakie, return. Charmander, you're up!"

"Gah!"

Charmander stepped forward confidently.

"Charmander, use [Smokescreen] first, then follow up with [Flamethrower]!"

Charmander exhaled a thick Smokescreen, shrouding the battlefield in smoke. Butterfree, despite being a trained Pokémon, was momentarily disoriented.

"Butterfree, get out of the smoke and counterattack!" Cole shouted.

Butterfree flapped its wings furiously, emerging from the smoke—but right into Satoshi's trap.

"Now! Charmander, [Flamethrower]!"

Charmander unleashed a blazing stream of fire that engulfed Butterfree. The fire attack, already boosted by its type advantage, dealt massive damage. Butterfree collapsed in a single hit.

> "Ding! Charmander gained 150 experience points!"

"Ding! Charmander leveled up to Lv12!"

> "Ding! You defeated Bug Catcher Cole. You received 500 Alliance Coins and 1 Ultra Ball!"

Satoshi stared at the reward screen in disbelief.

"In my previous life, defeating NPC Trainers didn't give anything but Pokémon experience. Now I get Alliance Coins and an Ultra Ball? This must be another α version difference!"

He began to wonder.

"If a junior Trainer like Cole gives this much, what will I get from defeating stronger Trainers? What about Gym Leaders, Elites, or even the Champion?"

A grin spread across his face as the possibilities ran through his mind.
