Chapter 85: Can I Get A Break?
John lay back on the couch, the soft hum of his Gameboy providing the only background noise as he caught his breath.
[Dungeon Challenge Failed. Cooldown: 30 Days.]
It had been a brutal defeat. Camerupt, the LV50 fire-and-ground beast, had completely overrun him, leaving John with no chance to even put up a fight. Its Earthquake had torn through the battlefield, making the ground shake like an angry beast. The eruption had followed shortly after, and before he knew it, Gardevoir had been swallowed by the magma. Not that it mattered—there was no real pain here. But the spectacle of it all still made his heart race.
"This game really knows how to ramp up the tension," John muttered, wiping a bead of sweat off his forehead. "I wasn't even able to react." He let out a long breath and rubbed his eyes. "Guess that's what I get for taking on a level 50 with a team that's still catching up."
He tried to take a different perspective on things. Maybe this wasn't such a bad experience after all. Losing, even in a virtual environment, had taught him more about strategy and adapting under pressure than a hundred simple battles ever could. Plus, if nothing else, the game was a great way to train his resilience in the face of unexpected chaos.
"Real life's not always safe either," he thought. "Who knows what kind of trouble I could run into in the wild next time?"
There was a weird kind of comfort in knowing that even a failed battle was an opportunity for growth. And as John sat up straighter, preparing to dive back into his next challenge, he couldn't help but think that maybe he was better off for it. A good challenge, one that pushed the boundaries of his abilities and forced him to rethink his approach, was more than just a game mechanic. It was a lesson.
The battle with Maxie, the leader of the Team Magma, was always looming in the back of his mind. John knew that the next time he faced the fiery leader, he would need to be better prepared. After all, what good was strength if you couldn't survive the heat of a real battle? The kind where things could escalate in a heartbeat, with no warning.
His mind wandered to the Earthquake attack again. If something like that happened in real life—a 50-level Pokemon unleashing magma and destruction—it would be an absolute nightmare. A force of nature, capable of turning a peaceful city into a chaotic, smoldering ruin. The scale of destruction from such an eruption was staggering.
John chuckled bitterly, running his hand through his hair. "What am I even saying? It's just a game."
But still, there was something unsettling about how close to reality the simulation felt. If he ever faced something like that in real life, it would be nothing short of catastrophic. If you weren't careful, that kind of power could wipe entire neighborhoods off the map, especially when a Pokemon like Camerupt had the potential to turn any area into an active disaster zone.
"Maybe... maybe next time, I should grind my Pokemon higher before heading into those areas." He snapped himself out of his thoughts. "Enough daydreaming. Let's get back to it."
John reached for the Gameboy again, tapping the buttons as he navigated his way through the menus. It was time to level up his team, strengthen them before facing tougher foes. His Greninja, for instance, was only at LV 35, and that wasn't nearly enough. If he could just get it to LV 50, he was sure it would easily crush Camerupt. But for now, there was no quick fix. He had to put in the hours. And there was no shortcut to that.
"Alright, let's make some progress," he said, determined to do better this time.
As John continued on, his route took him through Mt. Chimney and toward the Jagged Pass. The roads, usually blocked, were open today, thanks to an unexpected plot twist in the game. Normally, these areas would be inaccessible until later, but it seemed that the game had its own surprises in store.
"Hey, that's new." John raised an eyebrow, seeing a path where there shouldn't have been one. "Looks like the plot's already moving ahead of schedule."
Without hesitation, he began his trek through Jagged Pass. The location was iconic, a narrow, winding path flanked by towering rocks. Ash from the volcano constantly swirled in the air, and John's Pokemon seemed to be more cautious in this area, picking their steps carefully as they advanced.
The trainers here were no joke either. John had to face off against a series of skilled opponents who had their own Pokemon ready to battle. As the battles progressed, John began to pick up a few new moves for his Pokemon, including Flame Charge and Rock Polish. These were the kinds of moves that would give him an edge, especially when he faced a tough opponent like Maxie or even those unpredictable wild Pokemon.
When he finally emerged from Jagged Pass, he found himself at Lavaridge Town, a place that felt like a welcome oasis after the rocky path. The small town, famous for its hot springs, had a charm that made it feel like a hidden retreat. There was a quiet tranquility to it, which was a sharp contrast to the intense battles he had just experienced.
John immediately headed to the Pokemon Center, where Nurse Joy offered a quick healing service. He always appreciated how the game made her character feel like an integral part of his journey. Afterward, he stopped by the nearby store to clean up and get rid of any unnecessary items in his bag.
But instead of rushing to the gym as he had planned, something caught his attention. There, just outside the hot spring spa, was an old man. The moment their eyes met, the man gave him a knowing smile and handed him a Pokemon egg.
[I've been saving this for you, young traveler.] The old man said cryptically, before turning and vanishing inside.
John was taken aback but couldn't help his curiosity. He had a good feeling about this egg. He'd heard about Wynaut and its evolution into Wobbuffet, a Pokemon that wasn't the strongest in terms of battle power but was rare enough to be considered a gem by collectors.
"I'll take good care of you," John muttered to the egg, smiling to himself.
He was about to head back to the Pokemon Center when an odd prompt appeared on his screen.
[Do you wish to enter the Lavaridge Hot Springs?]
"Huh," John raised an eyebrow, intrigued by the unexpected option. "Sure, why not?"
He selected [Yes], and in an instant, the world around him shifted. He suddenly found himself standing naked in front of a steaming hot spring. His eyes widened in disbelief.
"Wait, what?!" he exclaimed, half-laughing at the ridiculousness of it.
After a moment of stunned silence, he slowly dipped his toes into the warm water. The heat was soothing, wrapping around his legs in a gentle embrace. "Wow," he muttered. "This actually feels pretty nice."
Soon enough, John found himself fully submerged in the water, the heat surrounding him and making him feel completely at ease. "Comfortable..." he sighed contentedly.
It didn't take long for him to start thinking about his Pokemon. They deserved some rest, too. After a few minutes of relaxation, he stood up and turned toward a nearby computer, eager to send all his Pokemon to the hot spring as well. He sent them in one by one, watching as they reveled in the warm water, with even his strongest Pokemon seeming to relax for once.
Greninja, Combusken, Aron, and the others all seemed to appreciate the break from the intense battles. The hot springs provided an opportunity for everyone to unwind and heal. Even Hariyama, with his massive frame, was enjoying the warm soak, looking completely at peace for the first time in a while.
"This is the life," John murmured, watching as his Pokemon relaxed around him. "Maybe I'll take everyone here after every tough battle. We all need some downtime."
With his team resting and recharging, John felt confident about the challenges that lay ahead. He knew there would be tough times, but as long as he stayed strong and kept his Pokemon in top shape, nothing could stop them.
