Chapter 84: The Fiery Summit Showdown
Gardevoir's elegant form stood poised, its hands shimmering with tiny droplets of light as it executed Life Dew, a rare and powerful healing move. The water sparkled in the air, cascading over the battlefield like a gentle rain, washing away the acrid scent of burnt earth and neutralizing lingering toxins. Greninja, standing in the midst of it all, felt its strength returning. Its sharp eyes glinted as it adjusted its stance, ready for the next move.
To everyone's surprise, Greninja seemed to summon a hat made of pure elemental energy. Placing it on its head, the hat shimmered briefly before vanishing. The ninja-like Pokemon stood firm as Electivire's Thunder Punch surged toward it.
The lightning-infused punch struck Greninja directly, sparks flying everywhere. "Zizizi!" The electric current crackled wildly around its body. For a moment, the audience held their breath, expecting devastation.
Instead, Greninja's body absorbed the electric energy as if it were a refreshing drink. Not only did it emerge unharmed, but its movements became sharper and faster.
"I knew it," John said, a small smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth.
Greninja had used Role Play, a tactical move that allowed it to mimic the ability of its opponent. Electivire's Motor Drive—an ability that granted immunity to electric moves and boosted speed when struck by electricity—now belonged to Greninja.
Tabitha's face darkened. "Electivire, don't hold back! Use Dynamic Punch!"
Electivire roared and launched a devastating punch, but Greninja was already gone, a blur of motion. The punch hit only empty air. John's voice rang out, calm and decisive. "Cut."
In a flash, Greninja appeared behind Electivire, its kunai gleaming with cold precision. A deep slash carved across Electivire's chest, followed by another strike forming a perfect "X" of crimson. Electivire staggered, then fell with a heavy thud.
[Defeated Electivire (LV 40). Greninja gained 3,524 EXP.]
On the other side of the battlefield, Gabite was locked in a brutal close-range brawl with Camerupt. The two Pokemon traded powerful blows, neither holding back. Camerupt's flames scorched the ground, while Gabite's claws tore through its opponent's defenses. Despite Camerupt's higher level, Gabite had the edge thanks to Life Dew continuously healing its wounds and its superior speed.
With one final Dragon Claw, Gabite delivered the decisive blow. Camerupt collapsed, its body covered in deep gashes.
[Defeated Camerupt (LV 40). Gabite gained 3,214 EXP.]
Tabitha's shoulders sagged as he recalled his fallen Pokemon. His team, stronger on paper, had been completely outmaneuvered. Gritting his teeth, he muttered, "You got lucky this time." With that, he turned and fled toward Mt. Chimney.
John exhaled, tension draining from his body. "Finally," he muttered, brushing the dirt from his jacket. Despite the victory, Tabitha's team had been no joke, especially that Houndoom. Its relentless attacks had pushed John's team to the limit.
Greninja, standing tall and proud, glanced at its trainer. John smiled, patting its shoulder. "You were amazing out there."
A fiery glow in the sky caught John's attention. A bright red stone descended, landing gently in his outstretched hand.
[BOSS battle victory! Acquired: Fire Stone.]
John examined the stone, its fiery core pulsating with energy. He knew it was a valuable item, capable of evolving certain Pokemon. Pocketing it, he turned his attention back to the path ahead. They were running out of time.
"Let's move," John said, breaking into a run toward Mt. Chimney's summit. The Fire Team grunts they'd defeated earlier were regrouping, while members of the opposing Aqua Team were also advancing. Chaos loomed at the peak.
After a grueling ten-minute climb, John reached the summit. There, at the center of it all, stood Maxie. The leader of Team Magma, was a thin, sharp-faced man in a red-and-black trench coat. His cold, calculating gaze swept over John, as if weighing his worth.
"You're the trainer who bested Tabitha?" Maxie's voice was icy, devoid of emotion. "I might have considered recruiting you under different circumstances. But today, you've sealed your fate."
He raised a Pokeball, releasing a massive Camerupt onto the battlefield. The ground trembled beneath its weight as its level appeared above its head: LV 50.
John's heart skipped a beat. A level 50 Camerupt was leagues ahead of his team. Even the dungeon's warnings had recommended reaching LV 45 before attempting this fight. But there was no turning back now.
"Camerupt, Earthquake!"
Camerupt's massive hooves slammed into the ground, sending shockwaves rippling outward. The earth cracked and buckled, molten lava spewing from the ruptures.
BOOM!
