Chapter 155: Dragon Supremacy
Snow fell steadily, blanketing the battlefield with a wintry veil. This was the handiwork of Abomasnow, whose Snow Warning ability summoned a relentless blizzard. Unlike the games, where the damage from such weather is a fixed 1/16 of a Pokémon's health, reality proved much harsher. The damage varied with the intensity of the storm, dealing havoc on non-Ice types. For Garchomp, with its quadruple Ice weakness, this was nothing short of a nightmare.
Isaac, a seasoned Gym Leader, stood across the battlefield, his expression calm but focused. Even the referee and bystanders seemed to sense the challenge this snowy arena presented. Yet, his opponent, the fiery young trainer John, showed no signs of intimidation.
"Garchomp, Rock Smash!" John commanded, his voice cutting through the howling wind.
The ground dragon's powerful legs propelled it forward with remarkable speed. The snow had only begun to settle, the icy terrain not yet fully formed. Garchomp aimed to exploit this brief window to strike decisively.
"Icy Wind!" Isaac countered.
Abomasnow inhaled deeply before exhaling a freezing gust that swept across the battlefield. The temperature dropped sharply as frost crept along the ground. Yet, Garchomp surged forward, a spark of energy flashing beneath its claws as it closed the distance in an instant. With a fierce swipe, Garchomp's Rock Smash connected with Abomasnow's chest, forcing the towering Ice-type back a step.
"Ice Punch!" Isaac's command came swiftly, his eyes narrowing as he noted Garchomp's surprising agility.
Abomasnow's right fist glowed with a frostbitten aura as it swung at its opponent. But neither John nor Garchomp hesitated. They met the icy strike head-on, claw against fist, in a collision of power. The impact sent a shockwave through the arena, snow swirling violently around the combatants.
For a tense three seconds, the two Pokemon grappled, their energies colliding in a dazzling display. But Garchomp's raw strength proved superior, and Abomasnow staggered back, its footing slipping on the frosty terrain.
"Not bad," John muttered under his breath, assessing the situation. Abomasnow was formidable, but it was clear this wasn't Isaac's ace Pokémon. Likely a test, rather than a full-force challenge.
"Force Palm! Now!" John seized the opportunity.
Garchomp lunged again, its claws glowing with energy. The blow landed squarely, sending Abomasnow reeling further. The Fighting move's type advantage was evident, but more importantly, Rock Smash had lowered Abomasnow's defenses. Despite the damage, Abomasnow was still standing.
"Ingrain! Protect!" Isaac's voice rang out, commanding precision.
Roots sprouted from Abomasnow's feet, anchoring it firmly to the ground. Green energy pulsed through the roots, steadily restoring its health. At the same time, a translucent shield materialized around it, absorbing Garchomp's follow-up attack. The Protect shattered under the force, but the move had done its job, mitigating damage.
John's eyes glinted with determination. "Keep up the pressure, Garchomp! Another Rock Smash!"
"Ice Punch! Don't give up!" Isaac shouted.
This time, John adjusted his strategy. "Dodge and circle around! Hit it from behind!"
Garchomp's speed proved decisive. The dragon deftly sidestepped Abomasnow's frosty punch and darted behind it. Abomasnow's rooted feet left it unable to pivot quickly, and Garchomp's claws struck its back with a devastating Rock Smash. The impact sent Abomasnow crashing to the ground.
The referee raised his flag. "Abomasnow is unable to battle! Garchomp wins! The victor is John!"
Cheers erupted from the crowd, but John remained focused, analyzing the fight in his mind. The battle had been hard-fought, but his strategy had paid off. By closing the distance early and exploiting Abomasnow's immobility from Ingrain, he had turned the tide in his favor.
Isaac walked onto the battlefield, a faint smile on his face. "Good fight," he said, recalling Abomasnow to its Pokeball. His tone was approving, but John couldn't help but roll his eyes. Shouldn't the winner be the one saying that?
"So, about that surprise you mentioned?"John asked, his curiosity piqued.
Isaac chuckled, a mischievous glint in his eye. "How about I introduce you to my daughter as a wife?"
John froze, his face turning a shade of red that rivaled a Charizard's tail flame. "What?"
Standing nearby, Isaac's daughter, Jeanne, covered her face with her hands. "Dad!" she hissed, her tone equal parts embarrassment and fury. Her cheeks were as pink as a Jigglypuff's.
Isaac laughed heartily. "I'm just joking! Well, mostly." He turned back to Max, who still looked like he'd been hit by a Thunderbolt. "Your real reward is at my gym. Come by after the New Year, and bring that friend of yours, Mark."
John nodded, still too flustered to speak. "Uh, sure. Thanks."
Isaac's grin widened. "Don't look so reluctant. It's not every day you get a dowry offer like this!"
"Dad!" Jeanne's voice rose again, her glare promising retribution.
John decided it was best to retreat before he got dragged into another family argument. As he left the battlefield, he couldn't help but chuckle to himself. It had been a bizarre day, but at least he'd earned a victory—and a story to tell.
And maybe, just maybe, he'd think twice before battling a Gym Leader with a flair for theatrics.
