Ecruteak City.
A city where Lugia and Ho-Oh coexisted.
Humans built two towers for them: the Bell Tower, where Ho-Oh resided at the top, and the Burned Tower, formerly the Tower of Bells, which housed Lugia. The Bell Tower served as a place where Pokémon would rest, while the Tower of Bells was used to awaken Pokémon.
Hundreds of years ago, a lightning strike set the Tower of Bells ablaze, leaving Lugia disheartened by humanity. Lugia departed, as did Ho-Oh, but not before reviving three Pokémon that perished in the fire: Entei, Suicune, and Raikou. These three Pokémon then left with Ho-Oh.
Since then, only the ruins of the Burned Tower remain alongside the Bell Tower.
When Chris first arrived in Ecruteak City, he visited the Pokémon Center to heal his Pokémon and marked the city as a Fly target on his map. Afterward, he headed to the Ecruteak Gym to verify a theory of his own. He planned to explore the Bell Tower and the Burned Tower after his battle.
The Ecruteak Gym specializes in Ghost-type Pokémon, and its Gym Leader, Morty, uses a Gengar closely tied to the history of the Bell Tower. The Bell Tower was traditionally a sacred resting place for Pokémon, a burial site for those who passed away. Without Ho-Oh's purifying flames, the area became a haven for Ghost Pokémon, such as Gastly, which now populate the surroundings.
Chris, however, wasn't concerned about Ghost Pokémon. His Greninja and Tyranitar, both Dark-types, were more than capable of handling such threats. His real interest lay in Morty's strength. Being the first Gym Leader Chris faced in the Johto region, Morty's skill level was yet to be determined. Would he be as formidable as the Gym Leaders of Hoenn or similar to the lower-level Trainers in Rustboro City?
As Chris entered the dimly lit Gym, he found himself navigating a floating black platform, guided only by faint lights and the silhouettes of elderly women guarding the path. These Trainers served as obstacles, and their Pokémon hinted at the strength of Morty's team. Chris battled his way through them, gauging Morty's capabilities.
When Chris finally reached Morty, he found a young man dressed in white pants, a black top, and a purple scarf tied in a Ghost-themed design. His blond hair was neatly wrapped in a turban, giving him a composed and confident appearance.
"Welcome, challenger from the Hoenn region!" Morty greeted with a sly smile. "My mystical eyes spotted you the moment you entered the city! Have you come to explore our history or to challenge me in battle?"
"It's said that legendary Pokémon appear to Trainers of true strength. I've always believed in that legend and dedicated myself to becoming stronger. Let's see if you're a worthy rival in my pursuit of power!"
With a flourish, Morty struck a dramatic pose as the referee began to announce the rules.
"The match will now begin! Trainer Chris challenges Morty, Gym Leader of the Ecruteak Gym. Both Trainers will use three Pokémon. No switching is allowed, and the battle ends when one Trainer has no Pokémon left to fight."
Morty raised his hand and released a Poké Ball into the air. It opened mid-flight, releasing a Mismagius onto the battlefield.
Mismagius, the evolved form of Misdreavus, floated gracefully. Its spectral form resembled a purple robe adorned with three red gemstones, and its head mimicked a magician's hat.
Mismagius was level 60!
"He knows I'm a challenger from the Hoenn region," Chris thought, rubbing his chin. Analyzing the level of the Pokémon Morty sent out, Chris concluded, "It seems Morty adjusts his Pokémon's levels based on the number of Gym battles I've already won."
The role of a Gym Leader isn't to block Trainers aiming for the regional conference but to challenge and train them, identifying those with potential. Gym Leaders often scale their Pokémon's levels to match the strength of the challengers. Knowing Chris had previously defeated six Gyms, Morty likely tailored his team accordingly.
Chris unclipped a Poké Ball from his belt. "Let's go!" he called, releasing Greninja onto the battlefield. The sleek Water/Dark-type Pokémon appeared, poised and ready for action.
The referee glanced at both Trainers to ensure they were ready and then raised his flag. "Battle begin!" he declared.
"Mismagius, Magical Leaf!" Morty called, launching the first attack.
Mismagius's red gems gleamed ominously, and it spun mid-air. A cluster of turquoise, crescent-shaped leaves materialized around it, whirling like a storm before shooting toward Greninja with incredible speed.
Chris responded swiftly. "Surf!"
Greninja crouched low, slamming its palms against the ground. A towering wave rose behind it, sweeping forward with immense force. The water absorbed the incoming Magical Leaf attack, neutralizing it entirely, and continued toward Mismagius.
Surf's overwhelming power far surpassed the reach of Magical Leaf.
"Fly up and avoid it!" Morty ordered.
Taking advantage of its ability to levitate, Mismagius darted skyward, soaring out of the wave's range.
"Now!" Chris commanded.
Suddenly, a burst of water shot through the towering wave, a high-speed jet stream piercing directly toward the airborne Mismagius. The attack was too fast to evade.
"Protect!" Morty called out urgently, his voice cutting through the moment of chaos.
Mismagius snapped to attention just in time. A faint ripple appeared in front of it, forming a shimmering barrier. The jet stream slammed against the shield, dissipating harmlessly.
The water crashed back down, revealing Greninja, who had ridden the wave to close the distance between itself and Mismagius. Its sharp gaze locked onto its opponent.
In Greninja's right hand materialized a sleek, black blade, shrouded in Dark-type energy.
"Night Slash!" Chris declared.
