Chapter 9: Chapter 8: Froakie’s First Victory
"Pfft…"
Ryuu nearly burst out laughing.
Torchic's Ember attack was so weak, it was almost embarrassing.
He had seen plenty of starter Pokémon from upperclassmen before, but never one this pathetic.
No—he had to hold it in.
Not for Shun's sake, but for Torchic's dignity.
After all, Torchic was adorable.
Shun, on the other hand, looked completely dumbfounded.
He knew he wasn't exactly the smartest guy around, but even he could tell something was wrong.
When he first met Torchic, its flames had been powerful, strong enough to leave burn marks on a tree.
So why was it so weak now?
What he didn't know—was that when he first encountered Torchic, it had just eaten a spicy Tamato Berry, which had temporarily boosted its flame power.
That single misunderstanding had made him believe Torchic was a strong choice.
And so, he had unknowingly picked one of the weakest starters possible.
---
"Froakie, use Quick Attack."
Ryuu had no intention of letting Froakie take even a single hit.
He cared about his Pokémon, and he wasn't about to let Froakie get burned just to show off.
Froakie vanished in a blur, moving so fast it left behind a streak of blue light on the battlefield.
"The speed…! I couldn't even see it!"
"Did you see that? That was Quick Attack! Froakie must have amazing potential!"
Students watching from the sidelines were filled with envy and awe.
A starter Pokémon that could already use Quick Attack this early?
That meant it had an exceptionally high battle potential.
Aoi, watching from the stands, felt her heart racing.
Her hands clenched into tight fists, excitement overflowing inside her.
She wanted to cheer loudly, but somehow, all she could do was silently admire Ryuu.
He was amazing.
---
One of the teachers watching—an instructor from Class 3—wasn't as happy.
His expression darkened.
If Ryuu won this battle, it would mean Class 1 had the stronger Trainer.
And worse—Shun was one of the stronger students in Class 3.
If he lost this badly, it would be humiliating.
The teacher clenched his jaw.
Shun, don't lose too quickly.
On the other hand, Shun, however, was panicking.
Torchic had already lost track of Froakie's movement.
"Uh… Torchic, be careful!" he shouted, but it was pointless.
Torchic had no idea where Froakie was.
Shun himself was lost—he barely knew how to give proper commands.
It wasn't even his fault.
Torchic only had one move—Ember—which was weak to begin with.
Even if it somehow landed a hit, it wouldn't do much against a Water-type.
And now, with Froakie moving at blinding speed—
It was helpless.
---
"Use Bubble!"
At Ryuu's command, Froakie suddenly stopped, planted its feet—
And fired a barrage of shimmering bubbles straight at Torchic.
Pop! Pop! Pop!
Each bubble burst on impact, covering Torchic in a fine mist.
With a pained cry, Torchic was blasted backward, rolling across the ground before finally collapsing.
It didn't get up.
"Torchic is unable to battle! The winner is Ryuu Fujiwara!"
The referee—who just happened to be from Class 1—announced the result loudly.
The Class 3 students looked devastated.
One of their best students had been completely destroyed in his first battle.
Meanwhile, the Class 1 students erupted in cheers.
Ryuu had won flawlessly—without taking a single hit.
---
Shun's face twisted in frustration.
He had planned to show off.
Instead, he had been humiliated.
Still, he refused to admit defeat.
"Hmph! My Torchic hasn't even evolved yet! When it evolves, I'll crush you!"
His words were empty, but he clung to them desperately.
Ryuu just nodded seriously, as if completely agreeing.
"Yeah, yeah, you're totally right," he said. "Torchic is definitely a strong Pokémon. It's probably just too young right now."
Shun blinked, surprised.
He had expected Ryuu to mock him—but instead, he was agreeing with him?
"Yep," Ryuu continued, looking thoughtful. "If you just invest a ton of resources into it, I bet it'll become really strong one day."
Shun suddenly felt hopeful.
"Yeah… Yeah! You're right!" he said, grinning again.
He was completely convinced now.
If he invested everything he had into Torchic, it could become Elite-level! Maybe even Gym Leader-level!
Ryuu, meanwhile, was trying not to laugh.
A Common-potential Torchic would need an absurd amount of resources just to become decent.
And Shun's family?
They weren't rich enough to afford that level of investment.
By the time Torchic actually got stronger, everyone else in their class would have already left him behind.
Shun had completely fallen for it.
"Wait until my Torchic evolves into Blaziken!" Shun declared. "Then I'll defeat you for sure!"
And with that, he ran off, too embarrassed to stick around.
---
Aoi sighed.
"I can't believe he's that delusional," she muttered.
Ryuu just shrugged.
"Eh, let him dream."
Truth be told?
He didn't care about the whole rivalry thing.
He had already won.
Shun would waste his time chasing an unrealistic goal, while Ryuu would keep getting stronger.
This wasn't even a competition anymore.
Aoi pouted slightly.
"I still think he was being ridiculous," she said.
Her cheeks puffed up slightly, making her look adorably annoyed.
Ryuu smirked.
"Relax, it's no big deal. I don't take battles that seriously."
Which was a complete lie.
But Aoi didn't need to know that.
She stared at him for a moment, before suddenly beaming.
"You're amazing, Ryuu," she said.
Her eyes sparkled with admiration.
He blinked.
That was… unexpectedly cute.
For a second, he actually felt a little flustered.
But then—
He grinned.
"It's nothing. Actually, my chest muscles are way more impressive. Want me to show you later?"
He leaned in, his voice low and teasing, his breath warm against her ear.
Aoi froze.
Then—
Her face exploded into red.
She staggered back, nearly tripping over herself in panic.
Ryuu chuckled.
Oh?
So that's her weak spot?
This information would be very useful later.
Aoi, flustered beyond belief, grabbed her backpack.
"I-I'm going home now!" she stammered, before bolting out of the school.
Ryuu watched her go, his smirk widening.
She really was fun to tease.
And those long legs?
He wasn't letting anyone else have her.
This childhood sweetheart of his?
She was his—and he had no intention of giving her up.
"Alright, Froakie, let's go home."
Taking out Froakie's Poké Ball, he recalled his partner and headed for the bus stop.
Even as a Trainer from an Elite family, he always took the bus.
He had no interest in acting like a spoiled rich kid.
Besides—
The real fun was just beginning.
