Chapter 2: The Journey Begins

In Ash's home, Ash was putting on the clothes his mother had prepared in advance. His mother stood beside him, reminding him of various things, saying, "… Make sure to eat on time when you're outside, and when you sleep…"

"I know, Mom!" Ash replied with a wry smile.

"Oh, you child. But this is your first time going out on your own, and I don't know if you'll be able to take care of yourself." As she spoke, his mother helped him put on the backpack she had prepared.

Finally, Ash put on his bright red hat. With that, he was fully ready.

"Mom, I'm heading out now!"

"Be careful on the road!"

"Got it!"

Ash stepped out of the house and onto the road.

Ash stepped out of the house and onto the road. As he looked into the distance, his legs moved on their own, and he started running. The warm sunlight shone on his bright, cheerful smile.

As he ran out of the town, he stopped, turned around, and shouted loudly, "Goodbye, Pallet Town! When I return, I will definitely be a great Pokémon Trainer!"

After saying that, he continued running. At just ten years old, he seemed to have endless energy. The thought of countless adventures ahead filled Ash with excitement.

"Come out, Charmander!"

Walking into the grass on Route 1, Ash summoned Charmander. The little fire-type Pokémon, happy to be called out, looked excited.

"Char!" Charmander looked very happy to be called out.

"Hey, Charmander, our journey starts here! Excited?" Ash raised both hands in the air, cheering as if celebrating. But Charmander just stared, looking unsure of what he was doing.

Ash laughed awkwardly. "Saying all this… you probably don't even understand, huh? But from now on, we'll keep catching more Pokémon, starting with—"

As Ash touched his chin, deep in thought, the nearby grass rustled, and a brown-feathered bird jumped out.

Ash immediately took out the Pokédex given to him by Professor Oak and scanned the bird.

The Pokédex emitted a mature mechanical voice: "Pidgey, the Tiny Bird Pokémon. It dislikes fighting and hides in tall grass, feeding on small bugs."

"Pidgey, huh? Alright, Charmander, go!"

Charmander, with its cute little steps, ran toward the suddenly appearing Pidgey.

"Use Scratch!"

Charmander immediately stretched out its small claws and swiped at Pidgey.

"Pidgey, pidgey!"

Pidgey quickly noticed Charmander's attack and flapped its wings, flying away.

"Hey, wait! Wait a second!"

Ash hadn't expected Pidgey to escape. He hurriedly threw a Poké Ball, but it couldn't reach the already distant Pidgey.

"Sigh, I didn't expect to fail on my first try. I thought it would be easy!" Ash sighed.

Charmander sighed along with him. Seeing this, Ash couldn't help but pat Charmander's head and smile.

"Well, it can't be helped. Let's work hard from now on, Charmander!"

Suddenly, from the direction where the Pidgey had flown away, its cries echoed once again.

This time, however, the cry sounded even more panicked than before.

"Huh? That Pidgey… why is it flying back?"

Ash squinted his eyes and vaguely saw a dark mass behind Pidgey, though he couldn't tell what it was.

"Pid! gey ! Pidgey!"

Pidgey flew straight toward Ash. As it got closer, Ash finally saw what was behind it—it looked like a red-colored bird.

Ash quickly took out his Pokédex and scanned it.

The Pokédex spoke: "Spearow, the Tiny Bird Pokémon. It flies around rapidly and is extremely aggressive. It will relentlessly attack any Pokémon or person that provokes it."

"Uh… that Pidgey didn't just provoke a whole flock of Spearow, did it?!"

Cold sweat formed on Ash's forehead.

"Charmander, run!"

Without hesitation, Ash called out to Charmander and started running in the opposite direction.

By this time, Gary had already arrived in Viridian City. He glanced back at the road behind him and sighed, "I didn't expect a flock of Spearow to appear there. Good thing I avoided them… I wonder what happened to that loser Ash."

"Char! Charmandar!"

Charmander's short legs struggled to keep up, making it difficult to run.

Seeing this, Ash quickly picked up Charmander and ran as fast as he could.

Just then, Charmander pointed at the Poké Ball on Ash's waist. Only then did Ash realize—he could just return Charmander to its Poké Ball!

After returning Charmander to its Poké Ball, Ash still couldn't outrun the flying Spearow chasing him.

Before long, the Pidgey that had been fleeing caught up to Ash.

"You're the one who provoked the Spearow! Why are you flying toward me?!" Ash shouted at the Pidgey above him.

Ash couldn't tell whether the Pidgey was apologizing or saying something else.

He had no choice but to think of a plan. Should he turn around and fight them?

Glancing at Charmander's Poké Ball, he immediately shook his head, rejecting the idea.

If this kept up, he would be caught sooner or later…

The Pidgey flying above Ash suddenly noticed that his backpack was unzipped and immediately dove inside.

"Hey! What are you doing? I can't run as fast as you can fly!"

Ash grabbed his backpack, reached inside, and yanked the hiding Pidgey out.

Up ahead was the forest. Ash figured he could use the dense trees to his advantage, making it harder for the Spearow to fly freely and shake them off.

With this in mind, he quickly grabbed Pidgey, which hadn't flown too far.

"Don't panic! I have a plan!"

Hearing this, Pidgey finally calmed down.

Holding Pidgey tightly, Ash dashed into the forest.

Just as he expected, the flock of Spearow couldn't fly freely through the dense trees.

They quickly split into two groups—one flying above the treetops, tracking Ash's general direction, while the other weaved through the forest, pursuing him at a slower pace.

Ash used the trees to block the Spearow's line of sight and quickly hid inside a tree hollow with Pidgey.

The flock's chaotic flight through the forest disturbed many wild Pokémon.

A Rattata perched on a branch was suddenly hit by a Spearow, causing both of them to fall to the ground.

The two Pokémon that fell to the ground now had bumps on their heads.

They glared at each other for a moment before angrily shouting.

"Rattata! Rattata! Rattata!"

"Caw! Caw! Caw!"

Just then, a few more Spearow flew in from the side.

Rattata became visibly nervous. Rattataa…"

Meanwhile, the Spearow that had fallen grew more arrogant, puffing up its feathers. "Caw!"

"Rattata, the Mouse Pokémon. Its teeth are long and sharp. Since they grow continuously throughout its life, it gnaws on hard objects to keep them trimmed."

The mechanical voice echoed from the tree hollow, immediately drawing the attention of both Rattata and the Spearow.

Ash, holding his Pokédex, froze, staring blankly at the Spearow.

The Spearow turned their gaze toward Ash as well.

"pidgey! Pidgey!" Pidgey cried out loudly.

This time, Ash understood—it was basically saying, "You idiot! Why did you make noise?!"

But Ash couldn't help it; it was just a reflex whenever he saw a Pokémon.

Before the Spearow could react, Ash dashed out, quickly scooping up the fallen Rattata.

He sprinted away as the Spearow once again locked onto their target.

"Caw! Caw! Caw!"

"How much longer do I have to keep running?!" Ash shouted in frustration.

After pushing through a dense thicket, he suddenly found himself at the edge of a cliff.

With no time to stop, he tumbled straight over the edge.

Luckily, there was a stream below. Holding tightly onto Pidgey and Rattata, Ash plunged into the water with a big splash.

"Pid! Gey! Pidgey!"

Pidgey, who could naturally fly, struggled desperately to break free from Ash's arms.

Unfortunately, it wasn't strong enough and was dragged into the water along with him.

After drifting downstream for a while, Ash finally grabbed onto some grass at the riverbank and pulled himself up.

Now, one human and two Pokémon lay on their backs, exhausted, gasping for air.

"Hah… hah… we should… finally… have lost them, right?" Ash panted.

"Pidgey!"

Pidgey, drenched and shivering, flapped its wet wings angrily and pointed at Ash, screeching in frustration.

Only then did Ash realize—he should have just let Pidgey fly on its own earlier.

Scratching his head awkwardly, he chuckled, "Sorry about that… I kinda forgot."

"Rattata! Rattata!"

Rattata suddenly squealed in terror, pointing its tiny paws toward the sky.

Ash looked up and saw that the Spearow flock was still relentlessly chasing them.

"They're still after us?!"

With no other choice, Ash got up and started running again.
