Chapter 2: Chapter 2: Pokémon in the Bushes
With a flash of white light, three figures emerged.
"Persian, Butterfree, Rookidee, come check out your new home!"
Releasing his hand, Natsume smiled at the three Pokémon.
Among these three Pokémon, Persian was one that his parents had left behind.
It had been Natsume's companion since childhood.
Butterfree was caught by Natsume during high school, intended to be cultivated as a Support Pokémon and Utility Pokémon.
As for Rookidee, it was given to him as a graduation gift from the school.
Originally, Natsume planned to train it as his main Pokémon.
Counting the Egg Incubator in his arms, Natsume now had four Pokémon in total.
After emerging from their Poké Balls, the three Pokémon reacted differently.
The Persian landed and stretched lazily, elegantly walking over to Natsume's feet and crouching down.
It seemed rather uninterested in the new home Natsume mentioned.
In contrast, Butterfree and Rookidee, flying in the air, appeared curious about everything around them.
Especially Rookidee, which seemed quite restless even near Natsume, giving off the impression that it was ready to dash out and explore the world at any moment.
By comparison, Butterfree appeared more composed.
After the initial surprise, it quietly flew to Natsume's side and settled there.
"They are all very lively kids," the mayor said with a smile, watching Natsume's Pokémon with satisfaction.
A trainer's character can often be seen through their Pokémon.
After being released, Natsume's Pokémon appeared very relaxed and seemed quite close to him.
'That's a good sign.'
Perhaps due to his age, the mayor no longer cared much about whether the younger generation had any dazzling achievements.
Instead, he focused more on their character and personality traits.
He didn't seek someone exceptionally gifted; he hoped for someone with sound values, a sunny disposition, and a cheerful attitude.
'However...'
His gaze lingered on Persian for a few seconds, and the mayor felt that this Persian appeared stronger than the Pokémon trained by the kids learning at the gym in town.
Don't ask him how he sensed that.
Just call it a trainer's intuition.
I was once an impassioned young trainer too.
If Natsume had the ability to read minds, he would certainly affirm the mayor's intuition.
Persian was currently the main combat power of Natsume's team.
Without Persian, Natsume might not have decided to take over the farm.
After all, taking over a farm requires at least a basic capacity for self-defense.
"Let me show you around the farm."
Turning his head, the mayor led Natsume and the three Pokémon as they began to familiarize themselves with the farm.
As someone set to inherit the farm, it would be quite silly not to know what was on his own property.
"Up ahead is the old storage shed."
"This used to be a berry grove."
"This area was planned to be cleared for trying to grow some new types of grain."
"They say this lake is connected to a river underneath, and sometimes Pokémon from the river come swimming over."
Following the mayor, Mr. Mime constantly tried to chat with the three Pokémon along the way.
However, Persian appeared indifferent.
Its tail swished back and forth, showing either impatience or nonchalance.
It occasionally let out a long yawn.
On the other hand, Rookidee and Butterfree were quite willing to converse with the friendly Mr. Mime.
Throughout the walk, aside from the mayor's voice, the sounds of the three Pokémon could be heard, with Rookidee's quacking "ka ka ka" being the most prominent.
Eventually, the mayor brought Natsume to a slightly old-looking two-story building.
"This is pretty much the state of the farm."
"You can see that the farm is still in quite a neglected state."
"For now, you can stay in the town; there's no rush to return until the farm is repaired."
Considering the farm's currently abandoned condition, the mayor thought it would be better for Natsume to stay in town for a while.
Just as they approached the small building, they spotted a dark green Pokémon bursting out of a second-floor window.
"It's alright, Mayor. I was prepared before coming here."
Shaking his head, Natsume smiled as he politely declined the mayor's kind offer.
Before coming here, he had already planned various aspects and made the necessary arrangements.
For instance, he had contacted the construction team for the farm repairs.
He hadn't come to inherit the farm on a whim.
"Since you've said that, I won't say anything more."
"If you have any problems, feel free to come to me."
With his hands clasped behind his back, the mayor said with a smile.
Beside him, Mr. Mime mirrored the mayor's pose.
Natsume simply smiled in response to the mayor and did not intend to trouble him further.
After seeing the mayor off, Natsume returned to the front of the two-story building with his three Pokémon.
Pushing the door open, a cloud of dust swirled up.
The afternoon sunlight poured through the glass, and the dust motes dancing in the air resembled fairies twirling gracefully.
"It looks like the first thing I need to do after moving into my new home is a big cleanup."
After setting his crossbody bag and Egg Incubator aside, Natsume turned to his three Pokémon and smiled.
At that moment, he was filled with enthusiasm.
"Persian, please watch over my bag and the Egg Incubator."
"Buttersfree, you help me clean up."
"Rookidee, check around to see if there are any other Pokémon nearby."
"Remember not to start any conflicts!"
After pulling out a bunch of cleaning tools from his not-so-large crossbody bag, Natsume assigned tasks to the three Pokémon.
When he mentioned Rookidee, he hesitated for a moment.
He had only recently caught this Rookidee, and even though he intended to train it as his main Pokémon, the short time meant it had only learned a few moves.
As for its combat ability, it was not strong enough to even take on a senior citizen care center, let alone tackle a kindergarten!
"Ka ka!"
Butterfree seemed eager to help; after calling out twice, it flew out.
Persian simply gave a couple of hums before walking over to the Egg Incubator and squatting beside it, lazily licking its claws.
Butterfree then flew to Natsume's side, its red compound eyes glowing with a mysterious blue light.
The cleaning tools that Natsume had placed on the ground began to float in the air.
"Thank you for your hard work."
"Ulee!"
While Natsume was in the middle of cleaning, he didn't notice a small figure watching him and the Persian at the door curiously from the bushes in the distance.
Looking at the 'occupied' house, the small figure seemed somewhat reluctant, along with an indescribable yearning.
"Ka ka!"
Suddenly, a loud call came from above.
Rookidee, out on patrol, seemed to have noticed the existence of this figure.
"Umm!"
Startled by the sound, the small figure quickly dashed into the nearby woods and disappeared.
Only a curious Rookidee remained, tilting its head in confusion, unable to understand why the figure had reacted so dramatically.
