Chapter 6: Chapter 6 Welcome to the Island.
POV Change.
[Alice Blakeman, Adventures guild Clerk & Administrative Representative, Lvl 36][Kingdom of Anzaioria, Super Island, Fulk you Beach.]
Bargh!
The sound of expelled guts are heard as a certain desk jockey who is weak to sea sickness casts her breakfast into the waters over the rowboats edge.
The 9 other people in the boat don't comment on it but those who have to row though the mess aren't happy.
'Its been a week and were finally landing, the most annoying part of the journey was that we were stranded on our ships for 4 days waiting for a freak land bound storm to pass from the only beach even remotely close to the mana signature. The most gracious of welcomes from the cursed island.'
She just grumbles in her mind in both grogginess as well annoyance.
'Why the hell did that bastard have to send me, I saved his ass by showing him the form before his higher ups would have tanned his hide for negligence.'
one certain wave crashes against the hull of the rowboat cresting the lip and soaking the boats occupants in sea water, her especially. . .
'I there were like 15 other people he could have sent from the department, 7 of them deserve to be sent here as punishment for the sexual harassment in the office alone but no he sends me to crazy Island.'
The Rowboat crashes against the sand bank and a squad of deck hands jump to the beach before pulling the boat ashore on the beach, said Deck hands have levels and skills to assist with such actions so it only takes 6 of them to lug a rowboat with 14 others in it.
Once fully surrounded by semi solid material most of the boats occupants vacate the boat, She herself included.
still in an annoyed mood Every water logged step is heavy upon the beach, deafened by the hectic surroundings of many men & women ferrying and unloading rowboats upon the shore to form a rudimentary landing point.
As she travels the beach she spots a fellow commanding officer of the expedition peering into the thick foliage on the edge of the beach, approaching the other officer she realises its the head of the Monster hunters.
The Head hunter is a Lanky and tall figure with dark brown hair, his face gaunt and she remembers why, she could hear his retching 2 rowboats over on her arrival.
She addresses him "Well I have to ask since its my job but how bad does it look?" the Head hunter a man of little words shrugs to her question "sent scouts just now, takes time."
Seeing he's doing his job she sighs before going to do her job, she goes from group to group to make sure everything is on track and no problems have really occurred, during her progress she finds there's a problem with not having all the supplies as expected.
She was annoyed at that, her sole job the the expedition is to identify problems, find the cause then either tell her superiors or fix it if its not major. that's her main role but she has other duties mainly being the secretary for the Expedition Head and quartermaster for the expedition once we build the Dungeon camp.
Both roles don't require high levels but high enough book smarts which is harder to supply which is why they assigned someone of her low level to the role even though this is a dangerous expedition.
Basically she was expendable and she knew it but was forced to go or lose her job.
She does her job and learns that the problem with the supplies is that one of the Rowboats sank after hitting a random head of coral which pierced the hull, the supplies and people were fine but the boat became unusable lagging the transit of goods from the expected amount causing the deficit.
The delay the broken rowboat would cause isn't really important or fixable so she just ignores it, she does send a note with one of the rowboats returning to the ship to tell them to focus more on immediately required resources but that all really.
By the time she sends the message she sees that the head hunter is now under the shade of a lone palm tree sifting though some paper reports probably from the scouts. seeing this she just walks to him and speaks, "is it better or worse than expected ?"
she asks this due to while the surrounding terrain has been scouted before by the past settlers and explorers, the last ship to land on this dreaded island was around 25 years ago, time is life's biggest agitator to fuck with things.
The head of the hunters peers at me and simply says with a grim tone, "40 average, 60 near the foot hills towards the mountains. mostly Elemental, Nature and Body enhancement monsters."
The information he provides causes me to both grumble and feel relief.
I grumble internally at the average levels, this is due to the average of the lowlands of the island Rising from 30 to 40 which raises the danger highly, while I feel relief since there aren't any rampancy of the unusual category monsters around.
We classify the monsters into 7 different categories based on the magic energy they use;
Basic, this is the base category, if the monster isn't remarkable their placed here.
Elemental, If the monster can produce phenomena related to the common elements their placed here.
Nature, this a sub-category related to the elemental category but this covers living material via its manipulation, regeneration or decay.
Body Enhancement, This category is for Monsters who internalise their Magic to empower themselves.
Artifice, the first unusual category these are monsters which use technology empowered with magic or mana for devastating effects.
Shadow, The second Unusual category these monsters are the hardest to pin down in combat, this category is the most elusive or trickiest to tangle with due to their cunning and ruthless nature.
Esoteric, The third and last Unusual Category, these monsters are known for their unknowable or unpredictable powers, this category is more to act as a umbrella category for the rest since if a monster doesn't fall into a previous category its powers are esoteric in nature.
I scribble some details down but I look at the Head hunter again, "have the scouts determined how long it would take to reach the dungeon from the port."
he speaks again "1 day by hiking, 3 by wagon train" she writes this down and turns to go find her superior to relay the information since that's her job.
She spots her said superior quickly, its not hard to find her since the presence of her retinue was distinct, honestly the idea of a diminutive black haired fair maiden surrounded by Roided out men being the leader of everyone here threw off her expectations of the expedition succeeding.
As she approaches the leader and her pack the earth starts to rumble and shake unexpectedly.
She has to brace herself from falling over as a gigantic serpentine monster breaches from the forests thick brush its head being that of a giant series of teeth.
the monstrosity is quick and strong as it goes to charge at the people on the beach acting as an Apex predator that she no doubt believes it was in the surrounding area.
Too bad there's a bigger predator now.
Her thoughts are proven right as from the pack of strong men the charging of energy is heard before the sound of a launched projectile produced.
It only take a second for the sound of an impact to be heard coming from the monster which is how missing a massive cylindrical portion of its torso.
Alice sighs before writing down a note to determined what materials that could be gained from the monsters corpse as it falls down dead with its heart having been disintegrated.
'At least I won't be working for a muscle brained idiot, I am curious how they got Ciara Glossage to be the leader, I though high level Artifice mages preferred to stay in civilised areas so they can invent more gizmos.' she just shrugs and goes to give her report to the woman who just killed a level 50 Mutant Wormman.
