Chapter 3: Chapter 3:Mankey!
Professor Cerise took something from his desk, then placed a small bundle into Ace's hands—a set of five Poké Balls and a sleek, white Pokédex. The device gleamed under the lab's lights, its design reminiscent of the one Ash had used during his Kanto journey, but with a more modern and clean white finish.
"These are for you, Ace," Cerise said with a warm smile. "The Pokédex will help you learn about the Pokémon you encounter, and the Poké Balls are to help you catch your team. Use them wisely."
Ace looked down at the items in his hands, his chest swelling with gratitude. "Thank you, Professor," he said sincerely, meeting Cerise's eyes.
"Don't mention it," the professor replied. "Now, let me walk you to the door."
Ace followed Professor Cerise toward the lab's exit, Smeargle trotting happily at his side. Waiting for them at the door were Talia and Chloe, both with smiles that Ace could tell were tinged with sadness.
"Good luck on your journey, Ace," Cerise said as they stepped outside. The fresh morning air carried the faint scent of salt from the nearby sea. "Remember, once your party is full, you can send any additional Pokémon back here. I'll take good care of them."
Ace nodded. "I'll keep that in mind, Professor. Thank you for everything."
Talia stepped forward, pulling Ace into a tight hug before he could react. Her soft hair brushed against his cheek as she cooed, "Make sure you don't get into trouble, eat well, and always—always—remember to change your underwear!"
Ace froze, his face burning bright red. "I-I will, Talia!" he stammered, pulling away as he tried to regain his composure. 'Why do all the Pokémon moms have to bring up underwear? Is this a universal thing?'
Chloe stepped forward, her Yamper in her arms. She clutched the little Electric-type tightly, her cheeks dusted with pink. "Do your best, Ace," she said softly, her voice wavering slightly. "Don't worry, Chloe. I'll do my best out there, right, Smeargle?" "Smear!" Smeargle barked enthusiastically, wagging its paint-dipped tail as if to cheer him on.
Chloe managed a small smile, though her grip on Yamper tightened. "I'll be cheering for you," she murmured, looking away for a moment to hide the sadness in her expression.
Ace turned back to the group, waving with one hand while holding Smeargle's Poké Ball in the other. "Thanks, everyone! I won't let you down!"
With that, he began walking down the path. Smeargle followed closely, looking back at the group and giving a cheerful "Smear!" before disappearing around the corner.
As soon as Ace was out of sight, Talia's smile faltered. She rubbed at her eyes quickly, but not before Cerise noticed the glimmer of tears.
"It's hard seeing him go," Talia admitted, her voice trembling.
Cerise placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "He's grown up," he said gently. "He'll be fine. You've raised him well, Talia, even if he wasn't our own by blood."
Chloe remained silent, her gaze fixed on the spot where Ace had disappeared. She clutched Yamper closer to her chest, the Pokémon letting out a soft whine as if sensing her feelings.
'I'll miss him,' Chloe thought, her heart heavy. 'But when I turn 15 in four months, I'll catch up to him. I'll join him on his journey.'
She glanced up at her father and mother, determination sparking in her eyes. 'When I travel with Ace, I'll figure out my own dream. Until then, I'll wait.'
Ace strolled away from Vermilion City, the bustling seaside town slowly fading into the distance behind him. The salty breeze was replaced by the earthy scent of the open road, a sign that his journey had officially begun.
In his arms, Smeargle rested contentedly, its tail swaying lazily and occasionally flicking drops of green paint onto the ground. Ace glanced down at the Pokémon, a small smile tugging at his lips. "You're living the life, aren't you, buddy?" he said, amused.
"Smear!" Smeargle barked softly, looking up at Ace with an expression that could only be described as smug satisfaction.
Ace chuckled before pulling out his Pokédex. The sleek white device fit snugly in his hand as he aimed it at Smeargle. The screen lit up, and a mechanical voice began reciting Smeargle's information.
[Name: Smeargle, the Painter Pokémon.
Description: A special fluid oozes from the tip of its tail. It paints the fluid everywhere to mark its territory.
Type: Normal.
Ability: Technician.
Gender: Male.
Moves: Sketch, Water Gun, Ember, Bullet Seed, Gust.]
Ace raised an eyebrow, his interest piqued. "Technician, huh? That's a pretty solid ability," he muttered.
He tapped on the screen, bringing up a more detailed explanation of Technician's effects. "Powers up the Pokémon's weaker moves, huh? That means these moves—Water Gun, Ember, Bullet Seed, Gust—are going to hit a lot harder than usual," he said, his tone thoughtful.
Ace looked down at Smeargle, who yawned lazily, completely unbothered by the attention. "You've been busy, haven't you?" Ace said, a grin forming. "Copying moves like these with Sketch...you must have fought a lot with those other Pokemon."
Smeargle glanced up at him, tilting its head before giving a confident bark. "Smear!" Causing Ace to chuckle as he continued to walk.
Ace paused after walking for about fifteen minutes, his gaze drawn to the rustling of a tree branch. His eyes lit up as he spotted a Mankey swinging agilely from one branch to another before snatching an Oran Berry. The Fighting-type Pokémon settled down on a sturdy branch, munching on the berry with apparent satisfaction.
'Mankey,' Ace thought, his mind racing with excitement. 'Its final evolution, Annihilape, is a Ghost/Fighting type and an absolute beast. I need this one on my team.'
"Alright, Smeargle," Ace said, placing his partner on the ground. "Time to show what we're made of. Get ready."
Smeargle barked in acknowledgment, his tail wagging enthusiastically.
Ace stepped forward, calling out to the Mankey. "Hey, Mankey! I challenge you to a battle! If I win, you're coming with me!"
Mankey's ears twitched at the sound, and it froze mid-bite. Slowly, it turned to face Ace and Smeargle, its expression shifting from calm to fierce. With a loud screech, Mankey leapt down from the tree, landing in front of Ace and Smeargle. Its eyes gleamed with determination as it clenched its small fists, ready for the fight.
Ace grinned. "Alright, Smeargle, let's start this!"
Mankey wasted no time, rushing forward with a glowing fist radiating Normal-type energy. "That's a Scratch attack," Ace identified. "Smeargle, counter it with Gust!"
Smeargle twirled his paintbrush-like tail, summoning a swirl of wind around him. With a mighty swing, he released the gust, the wind rushing forward to strike Mankey. The wild Pokémon stumbled slightly but quickly recovered, shaking off the damage with sheer willpower.
'This Mankey's tough,' Ace thought, his excitement growing.
Mankey retaliated, its eyes narrowing as stars began forming around its body. The glowing projectiles shot forward in rapid succession, heading straight for Smeargle.
"That's Swift! Perfect chance, Smeargle!" Ace shouted. "Use Sketch to copy it!"
Smeargle howled, his tail glowing with a bright white aura as he mimicked Mankey's movements. Moments later, identical stars formed around Smeargle before launching to intercept the incoming Swift attack. The two moves collided mid-air, canceling each other out in a dazzling display of light.
"Great job, Smeargle!" Ace cheered, but his celebration was cut short as Mankey closed the distance. Its foot glowed with a reddish-brown hue as it delivered a Low Kick, striking Smeargle squarely and sending him tumbling.
"Smeargle!" Ace called out, concern flashing across his face. Smeargle whimpered but pushed himself back to his feet.
"Don't let it get to you! Use Gust again!" Ace commanded.
Smeargle spun his tail once more, unleashing a powerful gust of wind that blew Mankey off its feet. The wild Pokémon landed roughly, struggling to stand as it swayed unsteadily.
'Now's the time!' Ace thought. "Smeargle, finish it with Bullet Seed!"
Smeargle focused, opening his mouth as a barrage of seeds shot out in rapid succession. The volley struck Mankey repeatedly, the force of the attack finally overwhelming it. With a pained cry, Mankey collapsed, its body motionless on the ground.
Ace didn't waste a second. He pulled out an empty Pokéball and threw it at the fainted Pokémon. The ball struck Mankey, opening and sucking the Pokémon inside with a burst of red light. It landed on the ground, shaking once... twice... three times before emitting a satisfying ding.
Ace stared at the ball in silence for a moment, his heart pounding in his chest. Slowly, a massive grin spread across his face. "We did it!" he exclaimed, picking up Smeargle and spinning him around in excitement.
"Smear!" Smeargle barked joyfully, wagging his tail in rhythm with Ace's movements.
Ace crouched down, his heart still racing with excitement as he held up Mankey's Pokéball. He couldn't help but grin as he pulled out his Pokédex. "Alright, let's see what we've got," he murmured, scanning the Pokéball to bring up Mankey's data.
The Pokédex lit up, displaying a detailed entry:
[Name: Mankey, the Pig Monkey Pokémon.
Description: Extremely quick to anger. It could be docile one moment then thrashing away the next instant.
Type: Fighting.
Ability: Defiant.
Gender: Male.
Moves: Focus Energy, Scratch, Leer, Low Kick, Counter, Night Slash (Egg Move).]
Ace's eyes widened slightly as he read through the information. 'Defiant, huh? That's a solid ability. If anyone tries to lower its stats, its Attack will spike. That's going to come in handy in tough battles.'
He glanced at the last move listed and felt a thrill run through him. 'Night Slash? An Egg Move? No way! That's amazing!'
He looked down at the Pokéball in his hand with a proud smile. "You're going to be a powerhouse, Mankey. I can already tell."
Smeargle barked happily, wagging his tail as if he shared Ace's enthusiasm.
Ace laughed, reaching out to pat Smeargle on the head. "Looks like we've got ourselves a strong teammate, buddy. Let's keep up this momentum!"
He placed the Pokéball securely into his bag, feeling more confident than ever. With a new Pokémon on his team, Ace knew his journey was truly off to a great start.
